Economic Development Commission seeks input at public meeting

SOUTHWICK – The Southwick Economic Development Commission (EDC) is hosting its first public meeting Thursday.
EDC Director Michael McMahon said the volunteer commission hopes to obtain input from residents and the local business community at the meeting, as well as tout Southwick’s business opportunities.
“Because we have a single tax rate here, it costs less to do business here than in other communities,” McMahon said.
Space is another plus to doing business in Southwick.
“In addition to a very low tax rate, Southwick has a lot of land zoned commercial and industrial,” McMahon said.
McMahon noted business zoned property is available near the Hudson Drive industrial area, as well as along College Highway and Feeding Hills Road.
“And Shaker Country Club has land in Southwick they have been excavating for sand and gravel, and I believe they are almost done and that land will be available to do something else with,” he said, adding that Griffin Land is a company that owns acres of land in town that could be used for business.
The EDC plans the annual Southwick Home & Business Show and hopes participants in the upcoming open meeting will answer questions to help the EDC, such as:
What should the EDC do in 2016?; What can the business community and residents do to make our town a better place to live and do business?; Would you like to be involved with this effort?
McMahon said generally the EDC commitment is one meeting per month with no meetings in July and August. Members assist with the Annual Home & Business Show.
“The meeting will be informal with no advance registration, etc. We want to know what the public would like us to focus on during 2016,” said McMahon.
The meeting is set for Jan. 1 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.
