Elderly targeted for scam in Granville

GRANVILLE – The Granville Police Department received a call about a scam at around 5 p.m. on Thursday. According to Lt. Rick Rindels, a woman claimed that her elderly in-laws received a call from an unknown number. The unknown person informed the in-laws that their daughter-in-law was involved in an accident and struck a pregnant pedestrian with her vehicle. The caller then told the elderly couple that their daughter-in-law needed money for bail and the caller gave them instructions on how to pay for the ball.

Although this has been the only recent scam that the Granville Police Department has received a call on, Rindels noted that the majority of their complaints on scams are targeting the elderly.

After Rindels received the call from the daughter-in-law, he posted on the department’s Facebook Page to remind the community about this common issue.

“We would like to remind everyone that these types of calls are almost always scams. If you receive a call like this, contact your loved one to see if there is any truth to the story before making any payments. You can also contact the police department if you have any concerns about a call such as this,” said Rindels in the social media post.

The Granville Police Department can be contacted at 413-357-8585.
