WESTFIELD – Ellen C. (Carroll) Wetherell, 71, of Westfield, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Springfield surrounded by Love. Born in Dalton, the daughter of the late Daniel and Frances (Smith) Carroll.
She was the beloved wife of the late Gordon Wetherell and loving partner to James Elliott of Westfield and former wife of James Besancon. She was employed with Gateway Regional School District as a secretary from 1/72-6/78 and Westfield State University from 8/78-4/13 as secretary for Residential Life and also known as the “Voice” of WSU.
She is survived by her children; daughter, Teresa (Besancon) and son-in law John (Jack) O’Malley of Warwick, RI and son, Eric Besancon and his partner Stephanie Miller of Huntington. Step-sons, David Sr. and Greg Wetherell of MA and daughter-in law Regina (Gina) Holzapfel of Southwick and her great treasures; her grandchildren, Jessica and John Szymkiewicz of RI, Katie and Aaron O’Malley of RI, Evan, Scott, Erica, Sierra, Elias and Sydney Ellen Besancon of Huntington, David Wetherell Jr. and his wife Jennifer of MD, Amanda Wetherell of Southwick, Daniel Wetherell of Maynard, Timothy, Samantha and Chris Wetherell of MA and her great-grandchildren, Hailee Evans of RI, Garrett Besancon of MA, Jacob Wetherell, Kaitlin Mavis, Nathan Brown of MD, Andrew and Savanna Masso of Southwick, Jocelyn and Paris of MA. She also leaves her sister, Jean (Carroll) Lamarre of NY and brother, Dan Carroll of NJ as well her nieces and nephews, Karen Bartling of TX, Susan Lapietra of NY, Jennifer Malone of KY, Diane Whiteman of NY, Daniel Lamarre of NY, David and Brian Ruf of NV along with many other extended family of blood, marriage and Love as well as the countless number of friends. She is now back in the loving arms of her parents, her husband, her sister Patricia Ruf and her children Lori, James Jr. and Scott Besancon.
Her service will be held on Thursday, August 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at Dever Auditorium in Parenzo Hall at Westfield State University, 577 Western Avenue, Westfield MA burial to be private at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or Ellen’s Fund-Westfield State University.
