HOW WESTFIELD BECAME KNOWN AS THE “BASEBALL TOWN”

April 24, 2019 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Presented by Dan Genovese, Wednesday, April 24, 2019, First Congregational Church. Free and open to the public. Baseball is America’s Game and Westfield is known as a baseball town, a “badge of honor” that is earned, so how did it start? The game was not invented by Abner Doubleday, instead it evolved and 19th century Westfield helped to shape the game we love. This presentation will cover our earliest days of “pre-baseball”, the pride and passion of our town teams and Westfield’s first two hometown MLB players.

Presented by Dan Genovese, author and historian of Westfield baseball history, winner of the 2010 Westfield Historical Commission’s Annual Preservation Award and Captain and Re-Founder of the Westfield Wheelmen Base Ball Club.
