March Activities for Adults at Southwick Public Library

March 6, 2019 @ 8:00 am - March 26, 2019 @ 5:00 pm

A Thriller by John Hart Examined by SPL’s Adult Book Discussion Group: John Hart’s thriller The Last Child will be the subject of the groups meeting on March 6 at 1:30 p.m. in the Southwick Public Library’s Community Room. The review in the “New York Times” reads –“Bestselling author of The King of Lies and Down River achieves his most significant work to date, in this intricate, powerful story of loss, hope, and courage in the face of evil.” Those interested in participating in the discussion on March 6 and have read The Las Child book are welcome to attend.

After the discussion copies of The Alice Network written by Kate Quinn will be available for sale at the Circulation Desk for those planning on attending the next discussion on April 3 at 1:30 p.m. Adults interested in participating and don’t wish to purchase a copy may check-out our copy or receive a copy through interlibrary loan.

Adult Coloring Program: Adult Color, Chat and Cookies will meet on Monday, March 18th at 6:30 p.m Winter is almost over and you might need to release some of the stress that comes with dealing with the weather. Join us for Adult Color, Chat & Cookies. This is a stress-free activity. All materials and snacks are provided. You don’t need to register. You don’t need to be there at a specific time! The program runs from 6:30 p.m.–8 p.m. and you may join us anytime between those hours. Bring a friend and catch-up on what happened over the winter.

Socrates Café to Hold Its First Meeting: The Southwick Public Library will be hosting a Socrates Café group on the third Tuesday, of the month starting on March 19 at 6:30 p.m. The group will meet in the library’s Community Room. The question to be discussed in March will be: What do you value? Future questions for discussion will be picked by the group.

Socrates Café is an opportunity for ordinary people to wrestle with the Big Questions, in a facilitated, volunteer-led discussion. Alternative viewpoints are encouraged and explored. All discussion takes place in an atmosphere of respect and encouragement. People from all walks of life, are encouraged to attend and contribute their unique views.

Mom’s WWII Letters – Reconstructing History & Genealogy Program: In May 2017, Corinne Smith found her mother’s stash of more than 100 letters from 16 servicemen she had corresponded with in 1944-1945. Corinne began to trace the soldiers’ family trees with one goal in mind: to return the letters in person to their children. Learn about this on-going project and hear some of the stories of the men & their relatives. Join us at the Southwick Public Library on Wednesday, March 20 at 7 p.m. to hear Corrine’s story.

This presentation links history and genealogy to present-day research and diligence. It revisits a time that we may not want to forget. And it may prompt others to wonder what treasures lurk in their own old family boxes, and how they can share the information with others.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Southwick Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

COOKBOOK CLUB TO TRY NO-STRESS DINNERS: The Cookbook Club will be using America’s Test Kitchen’s The Make-Ahead Cook: 8 Smart Strategies for Dinner Tonight to make no-stress dinner recipes. Participants will bring the dish they made to the meeting on Tuesday, March 26 at 6:30 p.m. The cookbook is now available for check-out at the Circulation Desk. Please make sure to add your name to the registration list when checking-out a copy of the cookbook.

Prior to the meeting on Tuesday, March 26, please email your first two choices of the recipe you’d like to make. The email should be sent to [email protected] with the subject Cookbook Club. You also have the option of calling the library at 569-1221 and inform us of your two choices. The library will contact you to let you know which recipe to bring or if you need to make another selection. This helps to prevent us from having duplicate items being prepared. New adult members are always welcome to pick-up a cookbook and sign-up at the Circulation Desk.

Please be advised: Neither the food served at cookbook club, and prepared in home kitchens, nor the facilities have been inspected by the state or the local public health agency.
