SUMMARY:Veteran names sought for addition to Southwick monument
DESCRIPTION:Southwick Veterans War Memorial as seen in November 2016 that features the additions of the Persian Gulf\, Iraq\, and Afghanistan wars. A new panel honoring non-native Southwick veterans is being created. (THE WESTFIELD NEWS PHOTO) \nSOUTHWICK – The town’s veteran’s organizations are seeking names to add to a new panel on Southwick’s Veteran’s Memorial monument. \nDeadline is this Friday\, June 12. \n“To be eligible\, they must have honorably served their country and deployed to a war zone from a different community\, and then moved to Southwick after their service\,” said Troy Henke of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 872.  “Please contact us at the VFW for more details if you know someone who should be on there. We are meeting with the engraver this coming Friday\, and the list will be established then.” \nIn order to be enshrined on the monument\, the veteran must have lived in Southwick for 40 years following service or moved here within five years after discharge\, and remained for the rest of their lives. \nVeterans who died in non-combat related service who were from Southwick are also eligible. \n“We have two such names so far\, Tanner M. Brach and Nancy Odell-Liupakka\,” Henke said. “Tanner died of a freak heart attack while on active duty in the Navy\, and Nancy was killed in a vehicle accident while on active duty in Italy.” \nHenke hopes people will come forward with more veterans. \n“We currently only have eight names\, and we know that there must be more\,” he said. \nThe VFW and American Legion Post 338 are joining forces to add to the monument. Funding for the panel came from several sources\, said Henke. \n“The town donated $2\,300 that was left over from a grant that was awarded to us when the Afghanistan/Iraq panel was built\,” he said. “Everything else has come from private donations\, with a total cost of $5\,000.”\nThe original plan was to unveil the new panel at the Southwick 250th grand parade in October. Because of COVID-19\, the parade and numerous other 250th related events have been postponed. \n“Now that it is postponed to a date unknown\, we don’t have an exact date\, but it will be unveiled at this parade when it happens in 2021\,” said Henke\, adding “That is subject to change if we are able to do it sooner\, but we want to unveil this with absolutely no restrictions as to whom and how many can attend.” \nTo submit a veteran’s name for consideration on the new memorial panel\, contact Troy Henke via Facebook messenger. SUMMARY:The Big Broadcast! returns to Mount Holyoke College’s Chapin Auditorium
DESCRIPTION:HOLYOKE—The Jazz Ensembles of Mount Holyoke College present the 15th edition of The Big Broadcast! on Saturday\, March 7 at 2PM & 7:30PM at Chapin Auditorium\, Mount Holyoke College\, in South Hadley\, MA. Snow date is Sunday\, March 8. Created and directed by Mark Gionfriddo\, who is also onstage as “Matt Morgan”\, The Big Broadcast!  is a re-creation of a live 1940’s radio show featuring the Mount Holyoke College Big Band\, Vocal Jazz\, and Chamber Jazz Ensembles performing well-known tunes from the swing era and the American songbook. WWLP-TV meteorologist Brian Lapis is emcee “Fred Kelley” for his 13th consecutive season. Mount Holyoke alum\, bassist and singer Caitlin Jaene Mercer\, will join The Big Broadcast! as special guest. \n  \nMount Holyoke College music faculty member Mark Gionfriddo originally created The Big Broadcast! for a small cabaret group he directed\, and incorporated it into the concert season at Mount Holyoke College. It has since been designated as a Signature Event at the college. \n  \n“Preparation for the show began early in January when my students and I researched live radio broadcasts of the 1940’s: big band swing music\, those great radio serials\, and the commercials of the day\,” said Gionfriddo. “We incorporate all of those elements into our production to give the audience the feel of an authentic radio variety program on a fictitious station named WJAZ.” \n  \nAccording to Gionfriddo\, this year’s program will include: Benny Goodman’s “All The Cats Join In”; “It’s Been A Long\, Long Time” by June Christy and Stan Kenton; the Glenn Miller classic “A String of Pearls”; Peggy Lee’s “Black Coffee”\, and a rare radio rendition of “On The Atchison\, Topeka\, and The Santa Fe” by the Andrews Sisters\, which was never officially released. \n  \nMark Gionfriddo\, creator and director (and “Matt Morgan”) of The Big Broadcast! Is well-known to area concertgoers as a piano soloist\, coach/accompanist\, composer/arranger\, conductor and music director. A versatile musician\, Mark is known for his diverse repertoire which includes classical\, jazz\, rock\, and popular music. Mark has been based at Mount Holyoke College since 1986 where he is Coordinator of Piano Studies for the Department of Music as well as Director and Founder of the Jazz Ensembles. In addition\, Mark is Catholic Music Director and conducts the Abbey Chapel Singers for the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life. \n  \nIn 2000\, Mark accompanied Garrison Keillor on the Chapin Auditorium stage in a New England Public Radio benefit show\, and he conducted the MHC Big Band in 2006 during two episodes of the popular NPR public radio quiz show “Says You!” During the summers\, Mark has been resident music director for Berkshire Theatre Group since 2011for their productions of Peter Pan\, Seussical the Musical\, Mary Poppins\, Beauty and The Beast\, A Christmas Carol\, The Music Man\, Tarzan\, Shrek the Musical\, and the Neil Ellenoff Musical Mondays series. Mark’s production of A Class Act also appeared off-Broadway at the Robert Moss Theatre. \n  \nMark has recently reunited with the internationally renowned Young@Heart  chorus as pianist and arranger\, a post he held from 1992-1998. He is also co-author of Good Night\, Dear Hart\, Good Night\, a book about Holyoke’s Hart-Lester H. Allen and the Ponzi scandal\, on the Epigraph imprint. \n  \nBrian Lapis (“Fred Kelley”) joined the 22News Storm Team in 1996. He got his start in broadcasting at the age of 15 at radio station WILI\, in his hometown of Willimantic\, CT. He’s worked as a radio on-air talent for stations in Hartford\, CT; Philadelphia\, PA; Syracuse\, NY; and Providence\, RI. Brian has a Bachelor’s degree in Television Radio Film Management from Syracuse University. In addition\, he holds a certificate in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University. This is his 12th season as WJAZ announcer and emcee “Fred Kelley”. In 2013\, the National Weather Association named Brian “Broadcaster of the Year”. \n  \nBrian loves performing as “Fred Kelley”. “The combination of the opportunity for me to perform\, the creative energy of the students and Mark Gionfriddo\, and the great music makes this far and away my favorite event of the year\,” he said.  “As a ‘student of broadcasting’\, I am one who appreciates the Golden Age of Radio and just how hugely popular these variety shows were in their day.  I’d like to believe that if I were around back in the 1940s\, I would have a gig like Fred Kelley’s.” \n  \nCaitlin Jaene Mercer\, Mount Holyoke Class of 2002\, is a self-described chanteuse style singer and a classically trained bassist\, who performs original songs\, jazz standards\, and fronts her alternative rock band Blue Hippopotamus. Her career started when she played bass with the National Youth Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. At Mount Holyoke\, she was a founding member of the first Jazz Ensemble\, and a singer with the a cappella V8s. After seeing Melissa Ferrick perform at Mount Holyoke’s Women in Music Festival\, she chose music as a profession. She’s currently based near Philadelphia\, where she mostly plays locally\, but she performs nationally in cities like New York\, Los Angeles\, Chicago\, Boston\, Seattle\, and more. Her website is: http://www.caitlinjaene.com/ and she’s online on Instagram and YouTube @CaitlinJaene. \n  \nPerformance sponsors of The Big Broadcast! are: Mount Holyoke College\, New England Public Media\, a partnership of New England Public Radio and WGBY; PRIME Magazine; WWLP-22News & The CW Springfield\, The Republican powering MassLive and El Pueblo Latino\, and Loomis Communities. \n  \nTickets (general admission): $25.00 premium front and center seating.$20.00 regular seating. SUMMARY:February WHOA presents action on the ice
DESCRIPTION:RUSSELL—There’s action on the ice for the February 15 Woronoco Heights Outdoor Adventures at Moses Scout Reservation. WHOA will be going “forward into the past” with a variety of winter activities both on and off its frozen lake. Participants can meet WHOA presenter Dennis Picard who’s been demonstrating the ice harvesting trade for more than twenty five years at museums and environmental education centers. A frequent speaker on the ice industry for libraries\, museums and universities\, he has also consulted for the BBC and PBS’s NOVA series. \n  \nMr. Picard\, will display some of his antique tools of that trade including several invented in Massachusetts and share the interesting tale of this once massive enterprise which is fading from our collective memories. WHOA invites would-be ice harvesters to come up and handle Dennis’s antique implements\, including a “pond saw” and the breaker bar to make a really big hole in the ice. \n  \nBeginning at noontime\, once the ice harvest hole is large enough\, the Russell Fire Department will be on hand to conduct their annual ice rescue training. Russell Fire Chief\, Niles LaValley\, will be welcoming WHOA’s participants to view the fire fighter’s using the latest in ice rescue training. The Fire Department will provide ice safety tips and allow for up close viewing of the training in real time. \n  \nAlong with the ice rescue and ice harvesting\, WHOA Director\, Mia Santos-Izak announces a new opportunity. The WHOA YUKON CHALLENGE\, where participants will have the chance to earn a special patch by taking part in at least three of WHOA’s five winter activities (ice fishing\, ice harvesting\, show shelter building\, snow shoeing\, and sugar shack hike). Upon registration\, guests may pick up their own YUKON CHALLENGE score card and work to complete their card by the end of the March 14 WHOA. Director Santos-Izak states that with the unpredictability of the weather some activities may not occur as planned. If so\, participants will be allowed to take more than one WHOA weekend to finish their card. \n  \nOther activities planned for the February 15 Saturday include; Amateur Radio\, Blacksmith Shop\, Cell Phone Photography\, Craft Shack\, Disc Golf\, Escape Rooms\, Geocaching\, Ice Fishing\, Ice Harvesting\, Ice Rescue\, Maple Sugaring\, Orienteering\, the WHOA Selfie-Cell Phone Photography Scavenger Hunt Bingo\, Snow Shelter Building\, Snow Shoeing and Welding. \n  \nEach month WHOA presents activities taking advantage of the Moses Scout Reservation’s 1300 acre camp\, just a few minutes from I-90 Exit 3\, at 310 Birch Hill Rd. in Russell MA. From 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM\, a day of “WHOA” is only $15 per person\, $10 for children under ten years and group rates available for parties of 10 or more. The ever growing list of activities is open to everyone. One does not need to be a Boy Scout to take part in a WHOA Saturday. Families\, children\, teens\, adults\, clubs\, teams and others may participate. All proceeds benefit various improvement projects and programs at the Horace A. Moses Scout Reservation. To find out more go to www.wmascouting.org/WHOAor to preregister on line see; www.wmascouting.org/WHOAFeb2020 \n  \nIt’s winter time so guests are suggested to dress warmly by wearing layers of clothing. No need to worry about making a fashion statement\, you’ll be at a Scout Camp. Wear what will keep you warm\, sneakers are really a “no\, no”\, especially out on the ice. The old say of\, “If your feet are cold … then wear a hat!” holds true. However\, for those who might get chilled\, warm food and hot cocoa is available at the camp’s trading post. As WHOA’s director exclaims\, “WHOA! Rain\, snow\, or shine it doesn’t get any better than this!”

SUMMARY:Westfield State University to host information session for M.S. in accounting program
DESCRIPTION:The College of Graduate and Continuing Education (CGCE) at Westfield State University will host an information session for the Master of Science in accounting program on Tuesday\, February 4 at 6 p.m. in the Horace Mann Center lobby\, 333 Western Avenue\, Westfield. \n  \nThe Master of Science in accounting program at Westfield State University is designed to foster leadership skills and prepare students for successful careers in public and private accounting. The Foundation Curriculum can be completed entirely online with courses offered on a rotating basis (students can also take courses in person). The Advanced Curriculum is for students with an undergraduate major or concentration in accounting. The Advanced Curriculum is comprised of 10 courses (the majority are offered in a hybrid format and certain courses are 100% online) that can be completed in just two semesters. The MSA program offers students flexibility and affordability to achieve a greater degree of sophistication in accounting and auditing. \n  \nInformation session attendees will have an opportunity to speak with faculty and members of the Outreach Team about the program and its application process. The $50 application fee will be waived for all attendees. To RSVP\, visit www.GoBackNow.com. For more information\, call 413-572-8020 or email wsucgce@westfield.ma.edu.
