All are welcome. Copies are available to borrow at the library. We will be reading and discussing “The Great Alone” by Kristin Hannah. Refreshments will be served. \n  \nSit ‘n’ Stitch: For knitters\, crochet-ers\, and embroiderers! Get help with a project or enjoy some quiet time to work. Finished baskets may be dropped off November 13-15. They will be on display November 18-December 13. The drawing will be held December 14. Proceeds from this raffle provide funding for programs and resources that are not in the library’s general budget. The Basket Maker’s packet is available at the library or in the town clerk’s lobby. This packet includes instructions\, a form for listing the contents of the basket\, and a tax receipt. \n  \nSouthwick Public Library’s Giving Tree November 8-December 20: From November 8- December 20\, we will be collecting homemade or new hats\, gloves\, mittens\, and scarves to give to the local Department of Children and Families. SUMMARY:Southwick’s 250th Banner Way Day Walk
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday November 17 from 1 to 4 p.m.\, the Southwick Select Board and the Southwick 250 Committee invites the public to join them in a walk to see the newly displayed banners honoring their history and their town. The walk will start at the northernmost banner on College Highway and proceed to the southernmost. There will be a brief welcome from the Selectboard Chair\, as well as banner narrations during the walk\, plus light refreshments at the town hall at the end. \n  \nAttendees are encouraged to park at the town hall and take the proffered bus ride to the beginning of the banner walk. For those who prefer not to walk\, or if the weather is bad\, there will be a virtual banner walk presentation at the town hall. Banners can be previewed at https://sites.google.com/view/southwick250/banner-way\, but the narration at the Banner Way Day walk will add interesting content about each of the 50 banners. All of the banners have been sold to businesses\, civic organizations and individuals. Those who purchased the banners are acknowledged on this site. The physical banners will be on display for about one year\, and then given to the purchasers. \n  \nThe Celebrate Southwick 250 committee members are asking for more people to become involved to help with the many celebrations planned. The next meeting will be held at 6:30\, November 18\, 6:30 p.m.\, at the Southwick Town Hall auditorium. All are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:The Western Mass Hilltown Hikers group will hike the Knittel Conservation Area in Blandford on Saturday\, November 16 at 10:00 am. GPS Location: 42.16996\, -72.92859. Hike rating: easy with some slopes\, two-mile loop trail. \n  \nThe Knittel Conservation Area in Blandford is a 254-acre tract comprised of fields\, forest and Falls Brook. Several trails wind through the property on both sides of Herrick Road. We will pass through different and interesting types of forest and around a pond with beaver dams. The conservation area helps protect the water supply of 250\,000 people and preserve the rural setting for a working farm. Located at the end of Herrick Road\, the parcel has been home to the Herrick family farm for generations. The area feeds the Cobble Mountain Reservoir\, which serves as the drinking water supply for Springfield\, Ludlow\, Agawam\, East Longmeadow\, Longmeadow\, and parts of Southwick and Westfield. \n  \nMeet at the Trailhead on 26 Herrick Road in the parking lot. Take Route 23 to 26 Herrick Rd in Blandford. Plan for two hours to loop the entire trail. This hike is co-sponsored by the Jacob’s Ladder Business Association: jlba.org and the Southern Hilltowns Adult Education Center: shaec.org. Maps and bottled water will be provided. Patrons purchase sheets of tickets. Advance tickets may be purchased at Main Street Styles in Huntington or in the choir room at the school. Four sheets of 25 tickets are available for $1. There is no charge for this program. \n  \nStory Yoga for Preschoolers: Join us at Southwick Public Library for Story Yoga on Tuesday November 5 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Listen to a story. Learn some yoga poses. Do a special yoga-related activity and make a craft. This hour-long program is fun for 2-5 year olds helps children to manage their bodies\, focus\, relax and have fun. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Advance registration is helpful but not necessary. This program is presented by Southwick Public Library and “Pathways for Parents.” \n  \nLEGO Club Fun: Building with LEGOs is fun for kids at Southwick Public Library. Kids in grades 3-6 can meet on Thursday\, November 7 at 3 p.m. Kindergarten-grade 2 will meet on Wednesday\, November 13 at 3:30 p.m. Use our LEGO blocks to build what you want. Create by yourself or with a friend. Then share your project while you have a snack. It is not necessary to sign-up for this event. We are looking forward to seeing your creation. \n  \nTuesday Storytime for 2-5 year-olds in November: Join the fun at Tuesday Storytime (for children ages 2-5 and their parent or caregiver) at Southwick Public Library on November 12\, 19\, and 26 at 10:30 a.m. Children ages 2-5 years old will listen to stories about beavers and “build” a dam. Learn a lesson from Goldilocks. Make a fun craft. Meet a new friend. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. \n  \nSaturday Storytime: The Southwick Public Library’s Saturday Storytime will be held on November 16 at 11:00 a.m. Children and their parents/care-givers are invited to join us as we sing songs\, read some Thanksgiving stories\, and create a fun craft to take home! No registration is required. \n  \nDrop-In Thanksgiving Craft: Stop by the Southwick Public Library’s Children’s Room anytime November 25-27 to make a fun turkey craft for Thanksgiving! Materials for this craft will be available during library hours. \n  \nListen to Stories While You Drive: Did you know that Southwick Public Library offers stories on CD and books with a built-in reader device? In the Children’s Room CD kits can be found hanging on a circular rack by the Picture Books. We also have chapter books in CD form on the carousel-type shelves inside the entrance to the Children’s Room. Kids can check out the book and CDs with the same title to help with reading comprehension or just to enjoy while they travel to their afterschool activities. We also have a collection of VOX Books which includes a device inside the front cover which will “read” the story aloud as the child turns the pages. VOX chargers are also available for checkout. Many adults have taken advantage of listening to stories on CD while driving. SUMMARY:Westfield Chamber Choir
DESCRIPTION:The Westfield Chamber Choir will present Gabriel Fauré’s “Requiem” on Sunday November 3 at 4:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Atonement\, located at 36 Court St.\, in Westfield. The choir is presenting this work as their inaugural concert\, having only formed back in February. The piece will be performed by the choir with Scott Bailey providing accompaniment on the organ. A freewill donation will be collected at the concert with proceeds to benefit the Westfield Food Pantry. Gifts of canned goods and non-perishables will also be accepted. SUMMARY:Custom Physical Therapy Clinic Opens in Southwick
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the brick and mortar opening of My PT\, a custom physical therapy clinic\, the public is invited to join their Grand Opening. The event will be held at My PT located at 108 Congamond Road\, Southwick\, throughout the afternoon on Wednesday October 30. To give back to the community that My PT calls home\, there will be a canned food drive to benefit Our Community Pantry serving Southwick\, Granville and Tolland. \n  \nThe outline for the day begins at 12:30 pm with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony presented by the Greater Westfield Chamber of Commerce. Then at 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm Dr. Tom Naro will demonstrate physical therapy techniques and answer anyone’s physical therapy questions. Following a break at 3:00 pm\, guests can attend the open house from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm. \n  \nMy PT will provide a tasty sampling from their neighbors during the Open House portion of the event. Enjoy soups created by The Hood Cafe and finger foods created by CPC Craft Meats and Smokehouse along with hot apple cider and giveaways. Come meet and greet Dr. Naro\, feel free to pick his brain about your muscle and joint pains or movement problems. DESCRIPTION:The Greater Westfield Community Band will present its annual fall concert on Wednesday October 30 at 7:30 at the Intermediate School\, formerly the North Middle School. “Remembering the Seventies” will feature great music from the Beatles\, The Beach Boys\, Neil Diamond and Elton John to name a few\, but the group promises a great time to one and all along the way.  The concert is open to the public and is free of charge.  The band has been providing great entertainment for more than 20 years and is currently under the tutelage of Jim O’Connor. SUMMARY:Free MIGHTY Program
DESCRIPTION:The YMCA of Greater Westfield\, in collaboration with Baystate Health\, is offering the MIGHTY (Moving\, Improving\, and Gaining Health Together at the YMCA) program\, beginning October 29. \n  \nMIGHTY\, funded by a grant from Kohl’s Cares\, is an evidence-based\, multi-component pediatric weight management program for children with a body mass index above the 95th percentile. This free program meets twice per month\, over a six-month period. During each two-hour session\, children and their families engage with exercise specialists\, nutritionists and behavioral health workers in classroom instruction and group exercise sessions. \n  \nThe upcoming session is for children between the ages of 8-10. Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 4-6 PM beginning October 29. To be eligible for the MIGHTY Program\, participants must be at or above the 95th percentile for body mass index (BMI)\, provide a medical clearance form signed by their health care provider and attend a registration session at the YMCA of Greater Westfield. Registration attendance is Thursday\, October 17th at 4PM. \n  \nSpace is limited. DESCRIPTION:“Through Hiking the Appalachian Trail” at the Westfield Athenaeum Wednesday\, October 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lang Auditorium. This is the story of a modern day adventure. Sam Ducharme set out on a 2180 mile\, 14 state backpacking trip from Springer Mountain\, Georgia to Mt. Katahdin Maine. During his six month journey he documented the rugged beauty of the Appalachian Mountains\, the wildlife\, the hardships encountered on the trail\, as well as the people\, culture and humanity at its finest. Come join him as he takes you through the trail towns\, over the mountaintops and through the backcountry. The images and stories will leave you with a renewed sense of the beauty of our country and its people. See his gear\, how he cooked and hear what it is like sleeping in a hammock for six months through three seasons. \n  \nSam Ducharme is a retired K9 Officer and is a lifelong resident of Connecticut. He has two adult sons\, both serving in the United States Air Force. As an avid outdoorsman\, and finding the nest empty\, Sam decided to buy a backpack and a plane ticket to Georgia. From there\, he started walking north. With no prior backpacking experience\, he learned on the trail. Gear\, trail nutrition\, enduring the elements\, and the logistics involved in a long distance backpacking trip were hard lessons. After 20 years working within Connecticut’s prisons\, the search for a positive recharge resulted in a life changing journey. \n  \nSigned copies of Sam’s book “Sole Searching on the Appalachian Trail” will be available for purchase after the program. DESCRIPTION:To help commemorate Southwick’s rich and colorful history\, the Southwick 250 organization is now recruiting sponsors for banners that will fly in town this November and remain up for one year. The 2’ x 5’ all-weather banners will then be gifted to the sponsors for display. The tax deductible donation of $250 will help provide funds for the myriad of events during the year-long celebration of Southwick’s birthday. Fox\, Chair\, Southwick Selectboard. “This is a major funding source for Southwick 250 birthday activities.
