SUMMARY:Through Hiking the Appalachian Trail
DESCRIPTION:“Through Hiking the Appalachian Trail” at the Westfield Athenaeum Wednesday\, October 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lang Auditorium. This is the story of a modern day adventure. Sam Ducharme set out on a 2180 mile\, 14 state backpacking trip from Springer Mountain\, Georgia to Mt. Katahdin Maine. During his six month journey he documented the rugged beauty of the Appalachian Mountains\, the wildlife\, the hardships encountered on the trail\, as well as the people\, culture and humanity at its finest. Come join him as he takes you through the trail towns\, over the mountaintops and through the backcountry. The images and stories will leave you with a renewed sense of the beauty of our country and its people. See his gear\, how he cooked and hear what it is like sleeping in a hammock for six months through three seasons. \n  \nSam Ducharme is a retired K9 Officer and is a lifelong resident of Connecticut. He has two adult sons\, both serving in the United States Air Force. As an avid outdoorsman\, and finding the nest empty\, Sam decided to buy a backpack and a plane ticket to Georgia. From there\, he started walking north. With no prior backpacking experience\, he learned on the trail. Gear\, trail nutrition\, enduring the elements\, and the logistics involved in a long distance backpacking trip were hard lessons. After 20 years working within Connecticut’s prisons\, the search for a positive recharge resulted in a life changing journey. \n  \nSigned copies of Sam’s book “Sole Searching on the Appalachian Trail” will be available for purchase after the program. Please call us at 413-568-7833 with questions www.westath.org. The event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Southwick’s 250th Committee Reveals Banners Highlighting Town’s History\, People and Events
DESCRIPTION:To help commemorate Southwick’s rich and colorful history\, the Southwick 250 organization is now recruiting sponsors for banners that will fly in town this November and remain up for one year. The 2’ x 5’ all-weather banners will then be gifted to the sponsors for display. The tax deductible donation of $250 will help provide funds for the myriad of events during the year-long celebration of Southwick’s birthday. Banners can be seen at https://sites.google.com/view/southwick250/banner-way. \n  \n“Sponsors of the banners will be prominently mentioned in press releases\, Facebook and other communications”\, said Russell S. Fox\, Chair\, Southwick Selectboard. “This is a major funding source for Southwick 250 birthday activities. We have so many great events planned\, but we need to fund them with money from the banner and souvenir sales. Check out the many beautifully designed banners by clicking https://sites.google.com/view/southwick250/banner-way. But because we’re over 50% sold out\, choose quickly to get the banner you want.” \n  \nThe Celebrate Southwick 250 committee members are asking for more people to become involved to help with the many celebrations planned. The next meeting will be held at 6:30 pm\, October 21\, at the Southwick town hall. All are welcome.

SUMMARY:Glow Walk to Help Feed Hungry Families
DESCRIPTION:The Westfield Food Pantry’s annual Fill the Pantry Walk will be held on Saturday\, October 19 beginning at St. John’s Lutheran Church at 60 Broad Street in Westfield. Registration begins at 5 pm. There will be glow sticks\, swag bags\, and t-shirts (while supplies last) and a door prize. \n  \nThe walk itself steps off at 6 pm and travels along the scenic Columbia Greenway Rail Trail. Participants are invited to walk alone or with a group of friends\, coworkers\, or team members. Children are welcome as walkers\, in strollers\, or riding bicycles and tricycles. There will be a prize for the best decorated bike. How far participants walk is optional. Shaker Road is a three mile round trip\, while the tin bridge is a one mile walk. Alternately community members are invited to skip the walk entirely and just attend the after-party back at St. John’s. Plans include a fire pit with hot dogs\, donuts\, refreshments\, and music. \n  \nThe Westfield Food Pantry has seen an increase in need among Westfield residents over the last few years. At the same time\, available funding has decreased. According to Executive Director Rebecca Hart\, “Although the economy has technically recovered\, that is not what we are experiencing. Corporate donations are at an all-time low\, grant opportunities have shrunk\, and our fundraising events are less successful than in the past. I believe it’s the result of many factors\, including rising costs for working and middle class families\, stagnant wages\, and recent changes in tax code.” These factors almost forced the Pantry to close over the summer. However\, donations from the community kept Pantry doors open\, and the Pantry is now working to stabilize funding for the coming year. The upcoming walk is a major part of that strategy. \n  \nParticipants in the Fill the Pantry Glow Walk can make a personal donation or find sponsors. Donations from the community will also be accepted on the website or by mail. This is the Pantry’s largest fundraiser for the year and is essential to ensuring sufficient funds to keep programs operating. All proceeds from the event help support Pantry services for families right here in the local community. Additional information and registration forms are available at www.WestfieldFoodPantry.org.
