Come hike a few of the trails with the Friends of SHAEC and Western Mass Hilltown Hikers\, as we team up to celebrate SHAEC’s 20 years of adult education in the Hilltowns. Donations for Friends of SHAEC will be accepted the day of the hike\, or in advance on SHAEC’s website: www.shaec.org. Prizes will be awarded to the highest donors. \n  \nThere are two trail options to hike one through the forest easy sloping rocky walk to the lake and the other a 2 mile old Norwich village forest trip where we will see old foundations\, cellar holes\, stone walls and two impressive dams and then loop back down to the lake. The Retreat is at 128 Norwich Lake in Huntington. Turn off of Route 66 in Huntington onto Searle Rd. When you get to the fork (approximately 1.7 miles) Turn right onto Rocky Point Rd. Destination will be on the left in approximately 7/10ths of a mile. Plenty of parking. SUMMARY:Car show benefits Scout camp
DESCRIPTION:Woronoco Heights Outdoor Adventures (WHOA!) and The Car Club of New England are presenting their first annual car show on Saturday October 19. All proceeds will benefit the Horace Moses Scout Reservation’s improvement projects. The car show is on the same day as the October WHOA! event making it convenient to attend the car show and participate in family outdoor activities. \n  \nAll makes\, years\, and models are invited to enter the car show. There is a $20 registration fee to enter a car and includes two passes to participate in WHOA!. There is no charge to spectators to visit the car show\, and participation in WHOA! events is only $15 per person\, with children under 10 only $10. \n  \nEach month from September to June WHOA! presents activities taking advantage of the Scout reservation’s 1300 acre acres at 310 Birch hill Rd. in Russell MA\, just 20 minutes from I-90 Exit 3. \n  \nWHOA! has an ever growing list of seasonal activities to present. Many activities are open to children as young as 5 years old. Families will find outdoor programs as well as fun activities indoors with all the equipment provided. At the lake will be canoes\, kayaks\, and fishing. Participants looking to get into the forest can try geocaching\, mountain biking\, orienteering\, nature activities\, and even our disc golf\, which has holes down wooded trails. \n  \nThose looking to try and make something can visit the blacksmith shop or attend kite-making lessons. The kite-making activity ends using the wind on the mountain field to see if it flies. Just for fun and to try something different WHOA! will also have climbing\, bouldering\, archery\, photography\, ham radio\, and escape rooms. \n  \nThe programs with minimum age are the 64-foot climbing tower and tomahawk throwing\, each with a minimum age of 10 years\, and a minimum age of 11 years for the .22 rifles and shotguns. The entire day is $15 per person\, with youth 5 to 9 years $10. Groups of 10 or more are discounted at $10 per person. \n  \nEquipment will be provided and activities will be supervised by experienced staff. Each program is available from 9 am until 3 pm and subject to change\, especially due to weather conditions. Some programs require signing up for a specific time period. Participants may arrive/leave at any time. Check-in is at the camp’s Trading Post where a menu of hot food and snacks will also be for sale. SUMMARY:Glow Walk to Help Feed Hungry Families
DESCRIPTION:The Westfield Food Pantry’s annual Fill the Pantry Walk will be held on Saturday\, October 19 beginning at St. John’s Lutheran Church at 60 Broad Street in Westfield. Registration begins at 5 pm. There will be glow sticks\, swag bags\, and t-shirts (while supplies last) and a door prize. \n  \nThe walk itself steps off at 6 pm and travels along the scenic Columbia Greenway Rail Trail. Participants are invited to walk alone or with a group of friends\, coworkers\, or team members. Children are welcome as walkers\, in strollers\, or riding bicycles and tricycles. There will be a prize for the best decorated bike. How far participants walk is optional. Shaker Road is a three mile round trip\, while the tin bridge is a one mile walk. Alternately community members are invited to skip the walk entirely and just attend the after-party back at St. John’s. Plans include a fire pit with hot dogs\, donuts\, refreshments\, and music. \n  \nThe Westfield Food Pantry has seen an increase in need among Westfield residents over the last few years. At the same time\, available funding has decreased. According to Executive Director Rebecca Hart\, “Although the economy has technically recovered\, that is not what we are experiencing. Corporate donations are at an all-time low\, grant opportunities have shrunk\, and our fundraising events are less successful than in the past. I believe it’s the result of many factors\, including rising costs for working and middle class families\, stagnant wages\, and recent changes in tax code.” These factors almost forced the Pantry to close over the summer. However\, donations from the community kept Pantry doors open\, and the Pantry is now working to stabilize funding for the coming year. The upcoming walk is a major part of that strategy. \n  \nParticipants in the Fill the Pantry Glow Walk can make a personal donation or find sponsors. Donations from the community will also be accepted on the website or by mail. This is the Pantry’s largest fundraiser for the year and is essential to ensuring sufficient funds to keep programs operating. Moving to Friday evening will allow diners to also enjoy live music by Ray Mason. A percentage of food ordered that night will be donated to the Gateway Education Foundation. \n  \nAlso Friday evening includes a Family Movie Night\, hosted at Gateway by the Class of 2020. Families are invited at 5:30 p.m. for face painting\, games and snacks. At 6:30 p.m.\, everyone is invited into the Gateway Performing Arts Center for a showing of Hotel Transylvania\, rated pg. There is no cost to attend\, but donations for the senior class will be gratefully accepted. \n  \nSaturday is full of active events including the 4th Annual Homecoming 5K Road Race\, a historic canoe/kayak tour of Littleville Lake\, and our Annual Alumni Soccer Game. The road race (known locally as ‘That Dam Race’) invites area runners of all abilities to challenge themselves on Gateway’s home cross-country course\, which includes running up the road that goes up the back of Littleville Dam\, and on roads and trails through the woods and along the water of Littleville Lake. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. in the Gateway parking lot\, and runners will walk to the starting point of the race at 9 a.m. (or as soon as all racers are registered). This is a service project of the Gateway Girls X-C Team; there is no fee to take part\, but donations to the Gateway Education Foundation will be gratefully accepted at registration. There will also be Tech T-shirts for sale for $25. \n  \nJoin the Gateway Outdoor Club as alumnus Jeff Penn leads a historic canoe/kayak tour of Littleville Lake. Bring your boat to the Littleville Boat Launch at noon. This event runs from noon to 2 p.m. and is free of charge\, but donations to the Gateway Outdoor Club are welcome. \n  \nOur Annual Alumni Soccer Game will be held under the lights on Booster Field at 7 p.m. The Gator Shack will be open! (Plans are in the works for a co-ed scrimmage of current high school players preceding the Alumni Game – please stay tuned for details on that!) \n  \nOn Sunday\, former band directors Kevin McAvoy and Paul Sawyer will join current director Beth Guertin in another Alumni Band event! Coffee hour and warm up starts at 9 a.m. and lunch will be provided at noon. Rehearsals will run mid morning and after lunch. The Alumni Band Concert will be offered at 4 p.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center. Admission is free but donations will be accepted at the door for the music program. A percentage of sales will be donated by the restaurant to the Gateway Education Foundation through Chester Common Table’s “Dine to Donate” program. \n  \nAlso on Friday\, the Class of 2020 will be hosting a Family Movie Night in the Gateway Performing Arts Center. “Hotel Transylvania” (rated PG) will be showing on our recently updated high resolution screen and sound system. Festivities begin at 5:30 with Halloween face painting\, games and snacks. The movie will start at 6:30 p.m. All activities are by donation and will benefit the senior class. \n  \nSaturday events include our 4th Annual 5K Dam Race\, a historic canoe/kayak tour of Littleville Lake\, and our annual Alumni Soccer Game under the lights. \n  \nArea runners are invited to challenge themselves on Gateway’s home cross-country course (better known as the 5K Dam Race). Registration is at 8:30 a.m. in the high school parking lot. The race begins at 9 a.m. This is a service project organized by the Gateway Girls X-C Team to benefit the Gateway Education Foundation. Learn what lurks under all of that water with local historian and Gateway Alumnus Jeff Penn. \n  \nWhen you’re done you’ll want a quick nap—especially if you are an alumni soccer player! The lights will be on and the Gator Shack open at Booster Field for the Annual Alumni Game at 7 p.m. It’s blue vs. gold in this longstanding\, traditional co-ed game of the year! All former Gateway soccer players are invited to take part. \n  \nArea musicians are invited to Gateway on Sunday to prepare for the Alumni Band Concert at 4 p.m. (For the rest of us – just come on down for the concert!). Music Director Beth Guertin will be joined by prior Directors Kevin McAvoy and Paul Sawyer. The band will host a coffee hour from 9 – 10 a.m. and then rehearsals begin. If you register in advance (www.grsd.org) you will get a .pdf of the music to get your chops ready! Lunch will be provided and the concert will be presented at 4 p.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center. DESCRIPTION:Beginning mid-October\, the fall sports teams are competing in their last home contests where the senior athletes will be recognized by their coaches\, teammates\, families\, and the Gateway Athletic Booster Club. \n  \nGirls and boys cross country runners will be recognized at their final home meet against Hampshire Regional and Pope Francis High Schools on Tuesday\, October 15. Three senior girls–Isabel Beaudry-Hathaway\, Autumn Marchetto\, and Grace Van Buren–and one senior boy\, Brett Bonenfant\, will be honored. The walk-through of the course begins at 3:45 p.m.\, and runners will then return to the start line for the beginning of the race. The senior athlete recognition will be held at the top of the Littleville Dam (best viewing location) after the races. \n  \nThe Girls Soccer Team will have their last home game on the Booster Field on Tuesday\, October 22 against Easthampton High School\, starting at 6 p.m. Ten senior girls will be honored before the start of the game on the Booster Field\, including Ava Auclair\, Hannah Coffey\, Alexis Cooper\, Erin Harris\, Nina Iglesias\, Charlotte Kazalski\, Brynja Miltimore\, Ashley Sullivan\, Donna Viel\, and Rachael Walczak. Home game admission is $2 for students/senior citizens and $4 for adults. Food and beverages will be available at the “Gator Shack.” \n  \nFinally\, the Boys Soccer team will honor their two seniors\, Nicholas Herman and Jake Thayer at their final home game against Duggan High School on Wednesday\, October 30\, also on the Booster Field. The boys will also be recognized at approximately 6 p.m.\, just before the start of the game. Come join the Gateway community as they bid farewell to their senior athletes later this month.

DESCRIPTION:The Chester Cultural Council has set an October 15 deadline for organizations\, schools\, and individuals to apply for grants that support cultural activities in the community. Application forms and more information about the Local Cultural Council Program are available online at www.mass-culture.org. \n  \nAccording to Council spokesperson Kathe Warden\, these grants can support a variety of artistic projects and activities in Chester — including exhibits\, festivals\, field trips\, short-term artist residencies\, or performances in schools\, workshops\, and lectures. \n  \nFor local guidelines and complete information on the Chester Cultural Council\, contact Kathe Warden at 413-354-7760 or selectmen@comcast.net. \n  \nThe Chester Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth. The LCC Program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation\, supporting thousands of community-based projects in the arts\, sciences and humanities every year. The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency\, which then allocates funds to each community. \n  \nThis year\, the Chester Cultural Council will distribute about $4\,500 in grants. Several of the previously funded projects have included the Hamilton Memorial Library’s Summer Reading Program\, The Chester Foundation’s “Chester on Track”\, and the Chester Theatre Company\, among others.

Armbrook Village’s Dementia Experience uses sensory modifications and role playing activities to depict real life situations that a person living with Mild Cognitive Impairment or dementia would face. Getting dressed\, taking your daily medications and preparing for a meal\, are all simple activities that are severely thwarted by cognitive disability. \n  \nThe Dementia Experience thrusts you into the daily life of someone with dementia by simulating the physical ailments afflicting many seniors and creating the frustration\, confusion and anxiety that accompanies cognitive impairment. \n  \nWho should attend this workshop: associates of a Senior Living community; families or a Caregiver of someone with dementia; senior center administrators\, staff and members; skilled nursing/rehab staff; and professionals who work with seniors. \n  \nThis is a free event that will take place on Wednesday\, October 9 at 6 pm at Armbrook Village\, 551 North Road\, Westfield\, MA. DESCRIPTION:It Takes a Village\, a local non-profit organization located in Cummington\, MA\, is hosting a special workshop with author and positive discipline educator Scott Noyes. The talk on Thursday\, October 3 at Gateway Regional Middle School\, “Helping Children Resolve Conflict and Manage Anger\,” will focus on the valuable lifelong lessons learned from childhood disputes\, helping children learn to disagree\, and resolving conflict through mediation\, triads\, and supportive intervention. This workshop is presented along with the Gateway Regional Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) and the Hilltown Community Health Centers. \n  \nScott Noyes is the owner of “Empowering Programs\,” which organizes workshops\, classes\, consultations\, and mentoring for parents and teachers. Scott has been professionally working\, playing\, writing and talking about children for thirty years\, and his book “Positive Discipline – That Works!” is in its fourth publishing. His newest reader\, “This Child is Driving Us Crazy – What Should We Do?” helps adults develop an effective behavior plan for children with feisty behaviors. \n  \n“Helping Children Resolve Conflict and Manage Anger” is part of It Takes a Village’s Parent Support and Education Program\, sponsored by The United Way of Hampshire County\, and is also funded in part through the Coordinated Family and Community Engagement Grant from the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care through the Hilltown Community Health Centers. \n  \nThe workshop is free and open to the public\, and food and free childcare will be provided. Part one of the lecture examines the mind of a serial killer through the knowledge gained in the profiling field by such men as John Douglas and Robert Reisler of the FBI’s Behavior Analysis Unit. The talk will touch on the two different types of serial killers and also the four categories. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Monday\, September 30 for two Food Explorers events with registered dietitian Katie Shepherd. The first event\, Food Jeopardy\, is at 1:00 P.M. and is for grades 5-12. At this event\, teens will answer Jeopardy questions about food\, compete for prizes\, and try some homemade food. The second event\, Oh\, Sugar!\, is at 2:30 P.M. and is for grades 1-4. At Oh\, Sugar!\, Katie will show kids how to make a healthy snack and teach them about which foods surprisingly contain sugar. Both events will serve food and will be nut free. SUMMARY:“Trees and Shrubs” with Dave Lovejoy
DESCRIPTION:Many of the common trees and shrubs of southern New England can be easily seen along the trails in the Sanctuary along the Little River. On September 29\, from 1—3pm\, we will focus on a dozen or so of these woody plants learning how to recognize them and distinguish them from similar species. Some late season wildflowers will also be seen. The workshop will meet at the main entrance sign to the Frank Stanley Beveridge Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary located across from the recreation field\, and will cancel if there is heavy rain. Wear hiking attire\, sturdy boots/shoes\, bring water\, your field guides\, binoculars and camera if you wish.
