Afterwards\, Mike alongside his co-author Rebecca Rowland\, will sign copies of their latest book\, Pieces. \n  \nMassachusetts Serial Killers with Christopher Daley\, October 9\, 7pm: This program is funded by the Friends of the Southwick Public Library. Massachusetts Serial Killers is a two-part slideshow/lecture in which methods of criminal profiling are discussed along with three historical cases of serial murder in Massachusetts. Part one of the lecture examines the mind of a serial killer through the knowledge gained in the profiling field by such men as John Douglas and Robert Reisler of the FBI’s Behavior Analysis Unit. The talk will touch on the two different types of serial killers and also the four categories. There will also be a short discussion on crime scene examination and differentiate the M.O. of a killer from his or her signature. Part two of the will focus on three Massachusetts serial killers; Thomas Piper\, the “Boston Belfry Murderer\,” Albert DeSalvo\, the so-called “Boston Strangler\,” and Kenneth Hanson\, known as the “Giggler.” \n  \nSocrates Café\, October 15 at 6:30pm: The Socrates Cafe is an opportunity for ordinary people to wrestle with the big questions in a discussion. Alternative viewpoints are encouraged and explored. All discussion takes place in an atmosphere of respect and encouragement. DESCRIPTION:Western Mass Hilltown Hikers group hike the H. Newman Marsh Memorial Trail Saturday September 21 at 10:00 am GPS Location: 42.25618\, -72.94677 Hike Rating: Moderate with Uphill Climbing and Steep Descent. Join us for a beautiful mountain trek along the H. Newman Marsh Memorial Trail on Observation Hill in the Chester-Blandford State Forest in Chester\, named after the outdoorsman and patron of the hilltowns who made the Jacob’s Ladder Scenic Byway (route 20) what it is today. We will make a steep climb up to Observation Hill\, cross a brook then travel through pine forest and discover three major vistas at approximately 1200 feet with awe inspiring views of the Westfield River Valley then loop back down the hill. We will see out cropping of schist rock\, different types of forest\, fern\, bear claw markings\, and wildflowers. About a million years ago\, a series of glaciers scraped the mountains. Some of the bedrock resisted the erosion and became the steeper hills of the valley. The scenic hills exposed today are the walls of the great canyon of the Westfield River. This is a loop trail\, with a round-trip length of 1.5 miles. Hike rating is Moderate with Uphill Climbing and Steep Descent with rock steps and roots. Plan for two hours for the hike. \n  \nMeet in the parking lot of the Chester-Blandford State Forest; look out for Bannish Lumber on Route 20 which is located opposite the parking lot. The trailhead is on Sanderson Brook Road inside the State Forest. There are many other trails located in the Chester-Blandford State Forest to enjoy as well including Sanderson Brook Falls\, Dynamite Box\, Beulah Land\, and the CCC Trail. \n  \nMaps and bottled water will be provided. Please be aware that there are no facilities at the trail. Dogs are welcome! SUMMARY:Outdoor family adventures begins 3rd season
DESCRIPTION:Woronoco Heights Outdoor Adventures (WHOA!) begins its third year of seasonal and special activities for families and groups on Saturday September 21 from 9am to 3pm using the facilities of the Horace Moses Scout Reservation. Each month from September to June WHOA! presents activities taking advantage of the reservation’s 1300 acre acres at 310 Birch hill Rd. in Russell MA\, just 20 minutes from I-90 Exit 3. \n  \nWHOA! offers an ever growing list of seasonal activities once a month from September to June. Many activities are open to children as young as 5 years old. Families will find outdoor programs as well as fun activities indoors with all the equipment provided. \n  \nAt the lake will be canoes\, kayaks\, and fishing. Participants looking to get into the forest can try geocaching\, mountain biking\, orienteering\, nature activities\, and even our disc golf which has holes down wooded trails. Those looking to try making something can visit the blacksmith shop\, a handicraft area\, or kite making lessons. The kite making activity ends using the usual wind on the mountain a field to see if it fly’s. \n  \nReturning to WHOA! is Earthwork Programs. Earthwork Programs will teach a brief session on survival skills. Just for fun and to try something different WHOA! will also have Climbing\, bouldering\, archery\, ATV’s\, ham radio\, and escape rooms. \n  \nIn September and October programs with minimum age is the 64 foot climbing tower and Tomahawk Throwing\, each with a minimum age of 10 years\, and the ATV program with a minimum age of 14 years. The entire day is $15 per person\, with youth 5 to 9 years $10. Groups of 10 or more are discounted at $10 per person. Equipment will be provided and activities will be supervised by experienced staff. \n  \nEach program is available from 9 am until 3 pm and subject to change\, especially due to weather conditions. Some programs require signing up for a specific time period. Participants may arrive/leave at any time. DESCRIPTION:Holy Trinity Parish will be holding its Fall Festival on Sunday\, September 15\, 12 noon to 5 pm at Pilsudski Park\, 200 Old County Rd.\, Holyoke\, MA. Our bake sale will have delicious homemade pastries. \n  \nOur festival will include Bingo\, Straw Booth\, games of chance\, a Chinese Raffle\, plus a 50/50 Raffle. There will be children’s games\, activities and a Bounce House. Our Grand Raffle has 10 money prizes worth a total of $2\,000 with the first prize being $1\,000. Tickets are $1 each or a book of 6 tickets for $5. Raffle tickets can be obtained in advance at the parish office during office hours and at the Festival. All ages are encouraged to participate as they celebrate and encourage each other to live an active\, healthy\, independent lifestyle. Walking is directly linked with good health and sustained independence. The Huntington COA has been working with Healthy Hampshire on a Town Walking Map. There will be several routes of various difficulties. Participants will collect raffle tickets for each route or each time a route is completed. The drawing for raffle prizes will be held at the end of the walk. Prizes include 2 Fitbits\, windchimes\, and Pyrex storage containers donated by Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association. There are designated 1-mile loops on several locations on the map. Some loops are easier than others and to achieve the 1-mile goal\, the number of repeated circuits will be indicated. Participants are encouraged to take as long as they need to finish walking 1 mile. Those who complete a 1 mile walk will have their name submitted to MCOA for a statewide raffle. All walkers with varying speeds and abilities are welcome to participate in the walk.
