This year’s fundraiser will support the repair of Stanley Park’s Rose Garden Fountain. \n  \nThe fountain\, located at the center of the Stanley Park Rose & Flower Garden\, is one of the most popular landmarks in the park and has served as the backdrop for countless engagement and wedding photos through the years. Surrounded by over 30 varieties of roses and several hundred rose bushes as well as variety of spectacular annual and perennial gardens the fountain has collected millions of wishes from its visitors since the park was founded. To help our visitors continue to enjoy this original and iconic feature of Stanley Park\, the fountain must undergo some much-needed repairs. \n  \nThis year’s event will be held Saturday\, September 7 at 5 pm in Stanley Park’s Beveridge Pavilion. The success of the event will rely on ticket sales\, sponsorships and donated items for the live and silent auctions. DESCRIPTION:The Agawam Community Artists and Artisans will hold its 2nd Annual Clothesline Fine Art and Craft Show at the Thomas Smith House at 251 North West Street in Feeding Hills on Saturday\, September 7 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. This event will be in conjunction with the Agawam Historical Association who will also be in attendance that day. Free tours of the “little red house” will be given by the Association members. This home was occupied until the 1950’s without modern conveniences\, such as central heating and running water. \n  \nAlso\, on Saturday during the show\, A. Burris Jenkins will be performing from 11 am to 3 pm. He will entertain with his original jazz adaptations of Bach and several other original jazz pieces. Enjoy a tranquil afternoon strolling the grounds and gardens of the house while listening to soft jazz. Visit with the artists and artisans in the tents and browse the unframed art which will be strung from clotheslines. Join us for a Leave No Trace Workshop\, led by the Appalachian Mountain Club\, focusing on fostering stewardship through our own practices in the outdoors. We will spend an hour hiking on the beautiful trails in Stanley Park\, periodically stopping along the way to discuss the 7 principals of Leave No Trace. This is an interactive course\, with users encouraged to bring fresh perspectives and questions for conversation surrounding sustainable habits in the outdoors. \n  \nThe workshop will meet at the main entrance sign to the Frank Stanley Beveridge Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary located across from the recreation field\, and will cancel if there is heavy rain. SUMMARY:Westfield State hosts fourth annual farm-to-table fundraising dinner
DESCRIPTION:Westfield State University Department of Communication will host a farm-to-table dinner on Sunday\, August 25\, from 5 to 8 p.m. on the grounds of the Horace Mann Center located at 333 Western Avenue in Westfield. \n  \nTitled “Dinner at Henry’s Garden\,” the event honors the late Dr. Henry Wefing\, professor emeritus of communication\, who served the University for 30 years. Proceeds will benefit the Henry Wefing Journalism Scholarship\, which has been awarded annually since 2016. \n  \nThe menu will feature locally-sourced ingredients. Menu options include roast beef with arugula\, wild mushroom polenta\, goat cheese and strawberry crostini\, and smoked salmon for appetizers; a vegetarian option or grilled barbecue chicken with vegetable and salad options for dinner; and summer plum upside down cake for dessert. \n  \nDiners will be seated for dinner next to the garden Dr. Wefing planted in 2007. He used to donate the produce to the Westfield Food Pantry. Today\, the garden is maintained by volunteers\, including faculty\, staff and students. \n  \nSponsored by MassLive\, The Westfield News\, Pennysaver\, and Jerome’s Party Plus/Taylor Rental\, the event will feature food prepared by Westfield State Dining Executive Chef Mary Reilly\, a gold medalist in a 2018 American Culinary Federation-sanctioned culinary competition. She is a frequent guest on WWLP’s Mass Appeal\, the former publisher of Edible Pioneer Valley and the co-author of Home Sausage Making (Storey Press\, 2017). A portion of the dinner will be prepared outside on site and Reilly will be available to meet guests\, answer questions\, and discuss the food and the importance of using locally-sourced ingredients. \n  \nThe event aligns with the University’s commitment to provide local\, sustainable food to its campus community. In 2016\, Westfield State launched a self-operating dining services system based on a farm-to-fork model. Today\, Westfield State Dining partners with more than 30 local farmers and food producers. \n  \nDinner tickets are $60 and must be purchased in advance\, as seating is limited and the event has sold out each year. DESCRIPTION:World jazz trio La Voz De Tres will blend the infectious rhythms and nuanced songwriting traditions of Latin America\, original compositions and music from the great American songbook into a surprising improvisational texture in their performance at the North Hall on Sunday August 25 at 2 pm. The trio of Chilean vocalist Natalia Bernal\, seven-string guitarist Jason Ennis\, and keyboardist Mike Eckroth weave Jazz and Latin American sounds across the country and internationally. \n  \nA meet-the-artists reception with refreshments will be held at intermission in the hall’s art gallery\, exhibiting the paintings of Jean Gaitenby. DESCRIPTION:The Westfield River Watershed Association (WRWA) and the Western Mass. Fly Fishermen will offer a free\, Introduction to Fly Fishing clinic Saturday\, August 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The clinic will take place on Route 20 in Huntington\, Mass.\, in the turnout on the Westfield River\, across from the Huntington Health Center. Children are welcome with the supervision of an adult at this family-friendly event. \n  \nPeople can drop in throughout the morning and watch a fly tying demonstration as well as practice casting. In addition to fly fishing activities\, a biologist will be on hand to net insects from the river and help participants learn to identify them under microscopes. DESCRIPTION:The annual Food Fest sponsored by the Rotary Club of Westfield will return to Elm Street for a fifth year on Friday and Saturday\, August 23 and 24\, bringing music\, food and entertainment downtown. The event will begin on Friday at 5 p.m. and continue until 10 p.m. On Saturday it will start at noon and close at 9 p.m. \n  \nThe Food Fest will feature non-stop entertainment with local bands performing on two stages. New activities this year include a climbing wall provided by the Boy Scout Council of Western Massachusetts and there will be games at the south end of Elm Street after 3 p.m. on Saturday\, including “cornhole”. The classic car show will return this year from noon until 3 p.m. on Saturday. \n  \nFood for the fest will be provided by returning vendors including Janik’s Pierogis\, Alo Saigon\, Skyline Trading Company\, Puks Grill\, Moe’s Donuts\, Bottega Cucina Tia Food\, Angelo’s Fried Dough\, Tatter Tots\, Moolicious Ice Cream\, Pandolfi Kettle Corn\, The Boys and Girls Club of Westfield\, The Boy Scouts\, The Westfield Kiwanis Club\, Little George’s and the North Elm Butcher Block. Other vendors will offer a variety of non-food items. \n  \nThe Rotary Club will offer beer and malt beverages from two beverage wagons. This year\, the club will stage a complimentary wine tasting on both nights\, 6 – 9 p.m.\, adjacent to the south stage. \n  \nThe 2018 Food Fest brought about 10\,000 participants to the city’s downtown for the free event and organizers hope to exceed that number this year. Artist John Briggs exhibits 50 of his prints and describes them as: “2016 was a winter of many temperature changes and little snow. As the ice around my house in the Granville woods formed and melted and formed again\, I found myself spending hours with my cameras foraging for the spirits\, creatures and secret beings who took shape in the ice around the edges and surface of my small backyard pond\, in the potholes and drainage ditches of the road I run on at the Cobble Mountain Reservoir\, and in the creeks of the Granville Forest. Native Americans know that the natural world is alive with spirits who are also the people and their ancestors. Some days I imagined my camera view frame as a window in which I saw—via various angles of reflected light—the Ur structures of reality: fleeting fluid and skeletal forms that lie beneath the skin of our familiar world where such items as ice seem merely commonplace. These curious “ice spirits\,” as I call them\, taught me many things. They communicated incisively\, though exactly what they conveyed remains far more nuanced than any words.
