SUMMARY:Sacred Heart Parish Blood Drive
DESCRIPTION:Sacred Heart Parish\, 1061 Springfield Street\, Feeding Hills hosted the Baystate Health Blood Drive this past April and we were able to save 30 adults or up to 50 more babies lives\, which brings us to over 535 adults or up to 825 babies lives saved since we began July of 2016. One donation saves 3 adults or up to 5 infants\, the gift of life is so very precious. Our next Blood Donation Drive will be Saturday\, July 27 from 10 – 3pm. If we can fill the schedule which is 30 appointments we would save between 90 and 150 lives\, how awesome would that be! I can easily save a block of time if you would like to get a group together and have a Blood Donation Party and make a day of it; share a meal together first then come to donate! If you have never given before\, I would be happy to come and stay with you while you donate. Each donation receives a thank you of a free Big E ticket and remember that the donations made through Baystate Health stays in Western Massachusetts! DESCRIPTION:For the fourth summer Westfield will host Open Air Open Mic nights on the Park Square Green in front on the Pavilion. This year’s weekly host will be Neal Lipktak\, a well known area performer and member of the local band Esperanto. Starting on July 19\, the Open Mics will be held on Wednesday evenings\, with sign-ups starting at 6pm and performances beginning at 6:30 pm. Microphones\, acoustic guitar plug-ins and a sound system are provided. Performances must include an instrument. Keyboards can be accommodated\, but singing to a smart phone track or other electronic device is not allowed. Performers of all ages are welcome. Performers and other attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or a blanket for seating. Beverages and snacks can be brought to the green\, but not alcoholic beverages. DESCRIPTION:On July 17\, Rotary will kick off its concert series at Whalley Park\, hosting Rich Badowski and his blues band. On July 24\, The Savage Brothers funkin’ rockin’ rhythm’ band will perform\, and on August 14\, blues legend James Montgomery will take the stage. Admission is free. All concerts begin at 6 pm until 8:30 pm\, rain or shine. Every year\, Rotary continues to unite the community. The concerts bring the community together through good music and good times\, a tradition the club hopes to continue. \n  \nAll concerts will be held at Whalley Park pavilion on Powder Mill Road. Smokey Waters will be available selling their popular BBQ\, and Rotary will have a beverage tent selling wine\, beer\, soft drinks and water. No coolers are allowed. Everyone is encouraged to bring a chair. \n  \nRotary continues to offer sponsorships for the summer series. Three levels in the amount of $500\, $300\, and $100 are available. A commitment of any amount is welcome\, greatly appreciated\, and will keep the music rolling! The club continues to work towards two more performances in August. SUMMARY:YMCA of Greater Westfield to Offer MIGHTY Pediatric Weight Management Program
DESCRIPTION:The YMCA of Greater Westfield\, in collaboration with Baystate Health\, is offering the MIGHTY (Moving\, Improving\, and Gaining Health Together at the YMCA) program\, beginning July 16. \n  \nMIGHTY\, funded by a grant from Kohl’s Cares\, is an evidence-based\, multi-component pediatric weight management program for children with a body mass index above the 95th percentile. This free program meets twice per month\, over a six-month period. During each two-hour session\, children and their families engage with exercise specialists\, nutritionists and behavioral health workers in classroom instruction and group exercise sessions. The upcoming session is for children between the ages of 10-13. Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 4-6 pm beginning July 16. \n  \nTo be eligible for the MIGHTY Program\, participants must be at or above the 95th percentile for body mass index (BMI)\, provide a medical clearance form signed by their health care provider and attend a registration session at the YMCA of Greater Westfield. SUMMARY:Berkshire Mountain Boys Sing Songs of Yesteryear
DESCRIPTION:The Berkshire Mountain Boys keep the old songs alive with their repertoire of bluegrass\, gospel\, folk ballads\, and country music of yesteryear on Sunday\, July 14 at 2 pm at the Historic North Hall in Huntington. The Berkshire Mountain Boys began with Phil Pothier on autoharp and vocals and Charlie Mihlek on guitar and vocals\, who have been performing together for over 50 years locally and across the country. They grew to a quartet by adding Dan Damkauskas on banjo and Don Lownds on mandolin\, as they entertain the crowd with vintage favorites of bluegrass\, gospel\, folk ballads\, and country music. \n  \nA meet-the-artists reception with refreshments will be held at intermission in the hall’s art gallery. The gallery will be exhibiting the nature and landscape photography of Richard Chapman. Admission is $10 at the door\, student/youth admission is free. Performance is at Historic North Hall\, 40 Searle Road (off Route 66) in Huntington. The hall is wheelchair-accessible and air-conditioned. Trail\, one of the lesser used trails. Who knows what natural wonders are to be seen on this moderately strenuous trail Bring water and bug spray. \n  \nSUNDAY\, July 14\, 10:30 a.m. BIRDING FOR BEGINNERS. This one hour program is meant to help beginners learn the basics of birding. The use of bird guides\, lists and binoculars are used to learn about these feathered creatures. \n  \nSUNDAY\, July 14\, 1:00 p.m. SUNDAY AFTERNOON FAMILY PROGRAM. The title for this week’s program is “Dragonflies\, Nature’s Helicopters” Dragonflies are fascinating in their movement and characteristics. Come learn about these unique insects and their world of flight. \n  \nMONDAY\, July 15\, 10:30 a.m. JUNIOR RANGERS. Children ages 5-6 are welcome to participate in this 4 week program to become a certified Junior Ranger. Through exploration\, crafts and games\, participants can receive an official Junior Ranger patch and certificate. Each child must attend 3 out of 4 classes to qualify for this status. \n  \nMONDAY\, July 15\, 1:00 p.m. ADVANCED HIKE FOR SENIORS. Seniors and others who want more of a challenging hike can join in on this one-two hour hike up one of the more strenuous trails. The hike on these trails is at a slower pace to accommodate this age bracket. Bring water. \n  \nTUESDAY\, July 16\, 10:30 a.m. SENIOR HIKE. Seniors can join in on this easy paced one hour hike. The terrain is mostly easy and the nature talk quite abundant. Bring water and bug spray \n  \nTUESDAY\, July 16\, 2:00 p.m. EXPLORERS CLUB. This weekly 1-2 hour program lets children ages 10-14 learn map reading skills\, trail markings and proper hiking techniques as we travel on all the trails here at Mt. Tom. Plus of course nature is observed closely. Bring water and bug spray. \n  \nThese programs are sponsored by the Department of Conservation and Recreation and are free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Ed Popielarczyk is a professional magician\, balloon sculptor\, flea circus ringmaster\, and storyteller. He has been entertaining children and family audiences for over 30 years. His magic show is a comedy show that uses a lot of audience participation. The kids are the stars because they make the magic happen. He usually has lots of trouble! He just doesn’t “do a trick”; he tells a story that revolves around each trick. It may be a short story or a longer one\, but each story helps to bring the trick together. Every child who comes on “stage” to be a helper receives a souvenir! The show is appropriate for ages three and up.
