SUMMARY:Western Mass. Master Gardeners Association to Offer Free Soil Testing
DESCRIPTION:The Western Massachusetts Master Gardener Association (WMMGA) will be offering soil pH testing at the Westfield Farmer’s Market on June 13 from 2 – 4pm. Does your lawn or garden need lime? If you live in Western MA the answer to this question is a definite maybe. Our soils vary from one yard to the next. For some yards\, lime needs to be added every few years to keep plants healthy. The only accurate way to know if your lawn or garden needs lime is to have the soil tested. If you applied lime in the fall now is the time to check it for the new growing season. Plan to have the best garden ever! \n  \nIt is easy to collect a soil sample. You can collect from your lawn\, vegetable garden\, perennial flower garden\, under trees or shrubs but keep each collection separate. You could end up bringing in multiple samples! With a trowel remove a plug of soil from the surface down to the proper depth. Sample depths are: 3-4 inches for lawn\, 6-8 inches for flower or vegetable garden\, 10-12 inches for trees or shrubs. Collect from several spots in your sampling area. If the area is small collect 4-6 samples\, large 8-12 samples. Place the soil into a bucket and mix it all \ntogether. Remove twigs and other coarse materials. Place about 1 cup into a zip lock bag. If your soil is at all damp\, you can leave the bag open to let it dry out and close it just when ready to bring in. Label each sample bag with its type – vegetable\, lawn\, perennial\, etc. and the approximate size of the area. \n  \nBring you sample or samples in to the WMMGA table at the Westfield Farmer’s Market on June 13 from 2– 4. Certified soil testers will test the pH of your sample and then tell you how much lime you may need to apply. The cost is a $2 donation. Master Gardeners will also be able to answer your soil questions and any other gardening questions you have. Check the WMMGA website for other days and times of soil testing and other events at http://wmmga.org. If you need a complete soil analysis you can send soil for a fee to UMass Soil Testing Laboratory: http://soiltest.umass.edu.

SUMMARY:Westfield State University to offer Addiction Counselor Education program
DESCRIPTION:The College of Graduate and Continuing Education at Westfield State University is accepting applications for the 2019–20 Addiction Counselor Education (ACE) program. Classes will be held on weekends and evenings starting in September and ending in May 2020. \n  \nThe goal of this non-credit certificate program\, offered at the University since 1991\, is to provide students with the knowledge\, skills\, and techniques necessary for the successful treatment of individuals and families afflicted by alcoholism and/or other drug addictions. This program has been highly instrumental in the professional development of individuals in the western Massachusetts area whom are either working in or interested in the growing healthcare field of addiction services. \n  \nTo help with this mission\, Westfield State University has expanded its ACE program to be offered in a new location in Pittsfield. The program aims to train potential counselors in the Berkshires area with the goal of filling critical positions in treatment facilities that are currently understaffed and unable to fill open positions. Classes for the Berkshires program will begin in March 2020 and conclude in November. \n  \nApplications for both programs are available online at www.westfield.ma.edu/ace. For more information or to have an application mailed to you\, contact Brandon Fredette at bfredette@westfield.ma.edu or 413-572-8033.

SUMMARY:“Home Sweet Home: But Where?” at the Westfield Senior Center
DESCRIPTION:Have you considered moving into a senior living community\, but don’t know what your options are? Making the decision to move from your home is one of the most difficult transitions that older adults can make. But you can simplify the process of finding your perfect-fit community by knowing the most important questions to ask. What are the differences between traditional retirement communities and independent or assisted living? How do I set up tours and make comparisons? Can I afford a senior living community? Can I have a trial period before I commit long term? Join Eric Aasheim from Oasis Senior Advisors of Western Massachusetts on Thursday\, June 6 at 6 p.m. at the Westfield Senior Center\, 45 Noble Street\, for an informative discussion about evaluating senior living options in our area. Family members are welcome and encouraged to attend. Please sign up by calling the Senior Center at 562-6435.
