DESCRIPTION:The Westfield Pickleball Group is offering “Learn to Play Pickleball” mornings starting Saturday\, June 1 at 10 am at the Municipal Courts on Franklin and Greylock St. Anyone\, ages 6 to 96\, is welcome to come and learn to play this highly fast paced game\, that requires little running. Placement\, shot selection\, patience & control of shots is what this game is all about. A cross between ping pong & tennis; it is played on half of a tennis court & nearly always as doubles. Games are very short\, exciting\, & full of boisterous laughter. It is truly one of the fastest growing sports (esp. among seniors) in the US & Canada. Part of the charm is the social aspect of the game & the ability to become an intermediate level player very quickly. \n  \nPaddles will be provided\, and the program is FREE. Just bring your water\, sneakers & a desire to play. Bring the family too! Courts will also be available for the Social/Intermediate level players wishing to take their game outdoors at 8:00am. Instructional pickleball will be offered thru out the month of June on Saturday’s at 10:00 am. Regular “Open play” is Monday\, Wednesday\, Friday\, Saturday & Sunday at 8:00 am and is open to all. DESCRIPTION:The Westfield Farmers’ Market will continue in 2019 as a Community Outreach Project of the Episcopal Church of the Atonement in Westfield\, and will remain on the grounds of the Church at 36 Court Street where it has been located for the last seven years. The Market will continue to be held on Thursday afternoons\, rain or shine\, noon till 6:00 pm\, May 30 through October 10\, 2019. The mission of the Market is to provide affordable\, healthy food to the greater Westfield community and to support local agriculture. Thanks to a private donation\, SNAP customers receive a match on their purchases each week up to $5; some vendors accept FMNP and WIC vouchers. Vendors say the Westfield Farmers’ Market is one of the premiere markets in the Pioneer Valley\, having grown from 7 to up to 35 vendors in the last 4 years. \n  \nThe Market Committee is seeking to expand the market to add a larger number and variety of vendors\, and is now accepting applications from vendors for the 2019 season. He’ll explain how trusts can benefit you and your family\, the difference between a Revocable Trust and an Irrevocable Trust\, methods for protecting assets from nursing home costs\, and he’ll answer the question\, “Is giving my house to my children a good idea or a bad idea?” A Westfield resident\, Attorney Gordon concentrates his legal work on helping families protect their assets. He is active with the Massachusetts Bar Association and has contributed to the annual Elder Law Handbook given out each May to help seniors understand the legal issues they face. DESCRIPTION:The public is encouraged to attend the 2019 Memorial Day observance on Monday\, May 27 in Huntington. The parade assembles at Pettis Field at 8:00 a.m. and marches to the gazebo on the Town green for the ceremony. All veterans and other groups are invited to participate. Following the program\, refreshments will be served in Stanton Hall along with the video “Hallowed Grounds.” This shows 22 overseas American military cemeteries (including Flanders Fields) where more than 125\,000 servicemen and women from World Wars I and II have their final resting place. Parade observers are reminded to stand\, with right hand over their heart\, when the American flag held by the color guard passes by.

DESCRIPTION:Mayor Brian P. Sullivan announces that groups marching in the Memorial Day Parade will begin assembling at 9:00 AM\, Monday\, May 27\, near the Mestek Company property on North Elm Street. The parade will begin promptly at 10:00 AM. The parade route will be as follows: beginning at Mestek\, the marchers will march south down North Elm Street\, continuing across the Great River Bridge onto Elm Street\, continuing south to Broad Street\, turning right at the intersection of Broad Street and West Silver Street to Parker Memorial Park for the Memorial Day ceremony. Following the Parker Park Ceremonies\, American Legion Post 124 will march the route in reverse to the post home on Broad St\, where additional ceremonies will be held beginning at 11:00am. \n  \nThe Memorial Day Parade Committee of the Westfield Veterans Council invites all previous participants\, and other parties interested in participating in this year’s parade to contact the committee by e-mail at parades@cityofwestfield.org. The committee will no longer mail out paper invitations\, and will use the e-mail registration as the primary means of registering for parade participation. As in the past\, please remember that the parade is a means of recognizing the sacrifices of those who gave their lives in defense of our country\, and as such\, is intended as a solemn event to be so conducted by the parade participants. No floats or commercial vehicles will participate in the parade. Only authorized city vehicles and veteran transport vehicles may participate. No dancing\, acrobatics\, or other celebratory activities are allowed. No animals may accompany participants.

DESCRIPTION:May 25\, 10:30 a.m. Life Around the Lake. Spring wildflowers around the lake will be our focus for this week’s program. Meet at Bray Lake. \n  \nMay 25\, 1:00 p.m. Hike to Mt Nonotuck. This two-hour hike will travel on the MM Trail to Mt. Nonotuck. The pace will be moderate as we observe the flora and fauna on the way with a great view Oxbow at the end. The terrain is fairly easy with some moderately strenuous stretches. Bring water and bug spray. \n  \nMay 26\, 10:30 a.m. Birding for Beginners. This one hour program will help beginners to learn the basics of birding. The use of bird guides\, lists and binoculars to learn about the local feathered inhabitants of Mt. Tom. \n  \nMay 26\, 1:00 p.m. Sunday Afternoon Family Program. This week’s program is titled “The Great Tree Scavenger Hunt”. This program will list all the benefits people derive from trees. Then we will go out and search for hidden tree products. \n  \nMay 27\, 10:30 a.m. Nature for the Beginning Naturalist. Children ages 6-8 can learn about nature and how to observe from a Naturalist’s point of view. Habitats\, plants and animals species will be explored through games\, crafts and observation in this one hour program. \n  \nMay 27\, 1:00 p.m. Advanced Hike for Seniors. Seniors and others who want more of a challenging hike can join in on this one-two hour hike up one of the more strenuous trails. The hike on these trails will be at a slower pace to accommodate this age bracket. Bring water. \n  \nMay 28\, 10:30 a.m. Senior Hike. Seniors can join in on this easy paced one hour hike. The terrain will be mostly easy and the nature talk will be abundant. Bring water. \n  \nMay 28\, 2:00 p.m. So You Want to be a Ranger. Children ages 9-14 have the opportunity to learn how to present a nature topic to friends and family. Through hiking. guide books and interactive exploration children will learn the fundamentals of program creation and presentation. At the end of this 5 week program everyone will have a chance to present a topic of their choice through whatever means of expression they desire (verbal\, art\, music\, poetry\, photography etc.) \n  \nThese programs are sponsored by the Department of Conservation and Recreation and are free and open to the public. SUMMARY:2019 Historic North Hall Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:The North Hall Association is proud to present the 10th Historic North Hall Arts Festival 2019 season\, opening with the Opera Showcase on Saturday May 25 at 7 pm and again on Sunday May 26 at 2 pm. The accomplished ensemble of soprano Amy Orsulak\, tenor Antonio Abate\, baritone Samuel Bowen and pianist Jerome Tan will perform various Italian arias and Schubert art song favorites. The program of Franz Schubert’s popular art songs for voice and piano will include “An die Musik”\, “Gretchen am Spinnrade”\, and “Standchen”. \n? \nThe performance will also be filled with Italian opera gems such as the fierce soprano aria “l’altra notte” from Boito’s Mefistofele\, the emotional aria “Nessun Dorma” from Puccini’s opera Turandot\, a few arias from La Boheme\, and more. A meet-the-artists reception with refreshments will be held at intermission in the hall’s art gallery. The gallery will be exhibiting the nature and landscape photography of Richard Chapman. \n  \nAdmission is $15 at the door; student/youth admission is free. SUMMARY:Adult Programs at the Southwick Public Library
DESCRIPTION:Geology of Southwick: The Southwick Public Library is pleased to have Geologist Richard Little at the library on Monday\, May 20 at 6:30 p.m. for his program The Geology of Southwick. Come and explore a billion years of history revealed in the rocks and landscape of Southwick and vicinity. This program will take you through the time before Pangea\, the break-up of a supercontinent\, and the effects of glaciers and Lake Hitchcock. Mr. Little will bring samples to illustrate this program\, including the rare Armored Mud Balls found in the Connecticut River Valley. He will also bring copies of his book Dinosaurs\, Dunes\, and Drifting Continents for sale. You are guaranteed to be entertained and educated by this fast-paced program. This program is made possible with funding provided by the Friends of the Southwick Public Library. Richard Little is a Geology Professor Emeritus at Greenfield Community College\, and was inducted into the Massachusetts Science Educator Hall of Fame in 2004. \n  \nSocrates’ Café the next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday\, May 22 in the library’s Community Room at 6:30 p.m. The group is meeting a day later than usual due to Southwick’s Town Meeting\, which will occur on the third Tuesday of May. The topic for May is “Is progress\, progress?” The group is facilitated by David Meczywor. Socrates Café is an opportunity for ordinary people to wrestle with the Big Questions\, in a discussion. Alternative viewpoints are encouraged and explored. All discussion takes place in an atmosphere of respect and encouragement. People from all walks of life\, are encouraged to attend and contribute their unique views. \n  \nAdult Cookbook Club will meet on May 28 at 6:30 p.m. In May\, the members will be making and sampling recipes from Paris. The group will be using the book Barefoot in Paris: Easy French Food You Can Make at Home by Ina Garten. Prior to the meeting on Tuesday\, May 28\, please email southwicklibrary@comcast.net with the subject Cookbook Club your first two choices of the recipe you’d like to make. This week’s program is titled “THE GREAT BUG HUNT” Search with us for insects and other creatures through this exploration of logs. \n  \nMONDAY\, MAY 20\, 10:30 a.m. NATURE FOR THE BEGINNING NATURALIST. (HOMESCHOOL PROGRAM) Children ages 6-8 can learn about nature and how to observe from a Naturalist’s point of view. Habitats\, plants and animals species will be explored through games\, crafts and observation in this one hour program. \n  \nMONDAY\, MAY 20\, 1:00 p.m. ADVANCED HIKE FOR SENIORS. Senior and others who want more of a challenging hike can join in on this one-two hour hike up one of the more strenuous trails. The hike on these trails will be at a slower pace to accommodate this age bracket. Bring water. \n  \nTUESDAY\, MAY 21\, 10:30 a.m. SENIOR HIKE. Seniors can join in on this easy paced one hour hike. The terrain will be mostly easy and the nature talk will be abundant. Bring water. \n  \nTUESDAY\, MAY 21\, 2:00 p.m. SO YOU WANT TO BE A RANGER. (HOMESCHOOL PROGRAM) Children ages 9-14 have the opportunity to learn how to present a nature topic to friends and family. Through hiking guide books and interactive exploration children will learn the fundamentals of program creation and presentation. At the end of this 5 week program everyone will have a chance to present a topic of their choice through whatever means of expression they desire (verbal\, art\, music\, poetry etc.). \n  \nThese programs are sponsored by the Department of Conservation and Recreation and are free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:As the snow starts to melt and the sun gets stronger our thoughts turn to spring. The board of the Agawam Garden Club is actively planning some interesting programs\, hands-on workshops\, and the annual plant sale to be held May 18th. Board members include President Denise Carmody\, Vice President Kathy Rose\, Treasurer Terry Augusti\, and Secretary Paula Figella. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month from March- November at the Agawam Senior Center\, 954 Main Street\, Agawam. The club’s purpose is to bring together those interested in expanding and sharing their horticultural knowledge and experience in a casual setting. It promotes interest in gardening\, floral and landscape design\, conservation\, and assist in civic beautification. All meetings are open to the public and not restricted to Agawam residents.
