SUMMARY:2019 Historic North Hall Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:The North Hall Association is proud to present the 10th Historic North Hall Arts Festival 2019 season\, opening with the Opera Showcase on Saturday May 25 at 7 pm and again on Sunday May 26 at 2 pm. The accomplished ensemble of soprano Amy Orsulak\, tenor Antonio Abate\, baritone Samuel Bowen and pianist Jerome Tan will perform various Italian arias and Schubert art song favorites. The program of Franz Schubert’s popular art songs for voice and piano will include “An die Musik”\, “Gretchen am Spinnrade”\, and “Standchen”. \n? \nThe performance will also be filled with Italian opera gems such as the fierce soprano aria “l’altra notte” from Boito’s Mefistofele\, the emotional aria “Nessun Dorma” from Puccini’s opera Turandot\, a few arias from La Boheme\, and more. A meet-the-artists reception with refreshments will be held at intermission in the hall’s art gallery. The gallery will be exhibiting the nature and landscape photography of Richard Chapman. \n  \nAdmission is $15 at the door; student/youth admission is free. All performances take place at Historic North Hall\, 40 Searle Road (off Route 66)\, Huntington. The hall is wheelchair-accessible and air-conditioned. DESCRIPTION:The Agawam Garden Club will be hosting a plant swap Saturday May 25 at 10 am. It will be held in the parking lot of the Feeding Hills Congregational Church\, 21 North Westfield Street\, Feeding Hills. Whether you enjoy gardening or just want to add variety to a special spot a plant swap is a great way to get new and free plants. Plants brought to swap should be in individual containers and labeled with the name of the plant. Each participant will receive a ticket for each plant they bring which can then be used to “buy” another plant. In case of rain the swap will move inside to the fellowship hall.

DESCRIPTION:Geology of Southwick: The Southwick Public Library is pleased to have Geologist Richard Little at the library on Monday\, May 20 at 6:30 p.m. for his program The Geology of Southwick. Come and explore a billion years of history revealed in the rocks and landscape of Southwick and vicinity. This program will take you through the time before Pangea\, the break-up of a supercontinent\, and the effects of glaciers and Lake Hitchcock. Mr. Little will bring samples to illustrate this program\, including the rare Armored Mud Balls found in the Connecticut River Valley. He will also bring copies of his book Dinosaurs\, Dunes\, and Drifting Continents for sale. You are guaranteed to be entertained and educated by this fast-paced program. This program is made possible with funding provided by the Friends of the Southwick Public Library. Richard Little is a Geology Professor Emeritus at Greenfield Community College\, and was inducted into the Massachusetts Science Educator Hall of Fame in 2004. \n  \nSocrates’ Café the next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday\, May 22 in the library’s Community Room at 6:30 p.m. The group is meeting a day later than usual due to Southwick’s Town Meeting\, which will occur on the third Tuesday of May. The topic for May is “Is progress\, progress?” The group is facilitated by David Meczywor. Socrates Café is an opportunity for ordinary people to wrestle with the Big Questions\, in a discussion. Alternative viewpoints are encouraged and explored. All discussion takes place in an atmosphere of respect and encouragement. People from all walks of life\, are encouraged to attend and contribute their unique views. \n  \nAdult Cookbook Club will meet on May 28 at 6:30 p.m. In May\, the members will be making and sampling recipes from Paris. This week’s program is titled “THE GREAT BUG HUNT” Search with us for insects and other creatures through this exploration of logs. \n  \nMONDAY\, MAY 20\, 10:30 a.m. NATURE FOR THE BEGINNING NATURALIST. (HOMESCHOOL PROGRAM) Children ages 6-8 can learn about nature and how to observe from a Naturalist’s point of view. Habitats\, plants and animals species will be explored through games\, crafts and observation in this one hour program. \n  \nMONDAY\, MAY 20\, 1:00 p.m. ADVANCED HIKE FOR SENIORS. Senior and others who want more of a challenging hike can join in on this one-two hour hike up one of the more strenuous trails. The hike on these trails will be at a slower pace to accommodate this age bracket. Bring water. \n  \nTUESDAY\, MAY 21\, 10:30 a.m. SENIOR HIKE. Seniors can join in on this easy paced one hour hike. (HOMESCHOOL PROGRAM) Children ages 9-14 have the opportunity to learn how to present a nature topic to friends and family. DESCRIPTION:As the snow starts to melt and the sun gets stronger our thoughts turn to spring. The board of the Agawam Garden Club is actively planning some interesting programs\, hands-on workshops\, and the annual plant sale to be held May 18th. Board members include President Denise Carmody\, Vice President Kathy Rose\, Treasurer Terry Augusti\, and Secretary Paula Figella. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month from March- November at the Agawam Senior Center\, 954 Main Street\, Agawam. The club’s purpose is to bring together those interested in expanding and sharing their horticultural knowledge and experience in a casual setting. It promotes interest in gardening\, floral and landscape design\, conservation\, and assist in civic beautification. All meetings are open to the public and not restricted to Agawam residents.

DESCRIPTION:This weekend as the City of Westfield celebrates its 350th Birthday the Westfield Athenaeum\, with over 150 years of its own history\, will be joining in on the fun. The Athenaeum will be open to friends and visitors as a part of the Birthday celebrations on Friday\, May 17\, from 8:30 to 2:00 p.m.\, and Saturday\, May 18\, from 8:30 to 5:00 p.m. Community members are invited to stop by the Jasper Rand Art Gallery for the historical map display\, where librarians will be on-hand to answer questions and walk patrons through maps and images of the Westfield of yesterday. Saturday\, the Edwin Smith Historical Museum is open with all of its artifacts and special exhibits\, including the replica colonial kitchen\, Westfield whips and the Ordinary\, the high wheeled bicycle. Also\, the Boys and Girls Library will host a drop-in craft table throughout the day Saturday with a special craft and children can celebrate the City by signing a very special birthday card\, and of course\, eating birthday cake! With lots to see and do for Westfield residents of all ages\, make sure a stop at the Athenaeum a part of your 350th Birthday weekend plans.

SUMMARY:Preschool screening and registration for the fall
DESCRIPTION:Free\, developmental screenings for young children will be held at Littleville Elementary School on Monday\, May 13 from noon to 3 p.m.\, and Thursday\, May 16 from 9 – 11:30 a.m. All children interested in enrolling in any of Gateway’s Integrated Preschool Programs must participate in a preschool screening to be considered for a peer partner slot. Please call Karen Malinowski at 685-1017 to schedule a screening. \n  \nPreschool screenings are given to identify any concerns that parents might have about their child’s development. Screenings include a brief check of skills in the following areas: cognitive/thinking skills\, speech and language skills\, fine and gross motor skills\, social/emotional skills and preschool readiness skills. In addition\, parents are asked to fill out a questionnaire; no additional paperwork is needed at the screening. Parents will be notified in writing about the screening results by mid-June\, and any next steps will be recommended. \n  \nChildren must be age 3 by May 13 in order to be screened. Children who turn age 3 after this date will be screened in the fall. Children must live in the Gateway Regional School District (Blandford\, Chester\, Huntington\, Middlefield\, Montgomery or Russell); school choice does not apply to preschool. Children who are already enrolled in a Gateway preschool program do not need to participate in screening/registration. Screenings are by appointment only and will take approximately 45 minutes. \n  \nIn the 2019-2020 school year\, Gateway will offer morning or afternoon preschool sessions at Littleville Elementary Schools\, Tuesday through Friday. Full day Preschool (Monday through Friday\, 9 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.) is offered at Chester Elementary School and Gateway Middle/High School. Full day preschool is primarily reserved for children who will be 4 years old by September 1. \n  \nA Preschool Parent Information Night for families who wish to learn more about Gateway’s Integrated Preschool Program has been scheduled for Tuesday\, May7 from 6 – 7 p.m. at Littleville. Free childcare will be provided and each family attending will receive a free book. \n  \nIf the number of screenings exceeds the number of available preschool openings\, peer partners will be determined by a lottery. Parents will be notified by mid-June if their child is accepted for enrollment. Parents must transport their children; bussing is only provided for children who receive preschool as part of their special education plan. \n  \nThere is no tuition charged to attend preschool. Sullivan and The Friends of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail as they have a bike ride through town in celebration of the10thAnnual Bike Ride on Monday\, May 13 at 5:30 p.m. in celebration of Bike Week. The Friends of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail coordinate this event with the Mayor’s office each year to celebrate Bike Week. There are few other items that are happening before and right after the bike ride. Please see the details listed below. There will be demonstrations on the “How To’s” of loading and unloading bikes on the PVTA Bus which will take place at 4:30 p.m. The ride will start from City Hall parking lot at 5:30 p.m. and begin the ride taking a left onto Court Street and right onto Broad Street\, to the Big Y entrance of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail and to the exit ramp at the Stop & Shop\, down onto Elm Street with police escort continuing down to the Columbia Greenway North Section. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place celebrating the completion of The Columbia Greenway North Bridge. Everyone is welcome!

DESCRIPTION:The Community of Westfield is invited to join Mayor Brian P. Sullivan and The Friends of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail at the 10th Annual Mayor’s Bike Ride on Monday May 13th at 5:30 p.m. \n  \nThe ride will leave City Hall parking lot\, take a left on Court St.\, a right onto Broad St.\, a left onto Silver St. to the entrance of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail (CGRT). The ride will proceed north along the CGRT to the ramp at the Stop & Shop\, take a quick left onto Main St\, followed by a quick right onto Elm St and continue down to the Columbia Greenway North Section. The ride will be accompanied by Westfield Police Officers. \n  \nA ribbon cutting ceremony will take place celebrating the completion of The Columbia Greenway North Bridge. The ride will then continue back to City Hall. Short demonstrations on the “how to’s” of loading and unloading bikes on and off a PVTA bus will take place between 4:30-5:30 in the City Hall Parking Lot. \n  \nRide for fun\, ride for health\, ride to experience the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail in its present state\, and see its future. Westfield is celebrating its 350th birthday\, can we get 350 riders? This event is one of many bike related events planned throughout the state recognizing MA Bike Week.
