SUMMARY:Preschool screening and registration for the fall
DESCRIPTION:Free\, developmental screenings for young children will be held at Littleville Elementary School on Monday\, May 13 from noon to 3 p.m.\, and Thursday\, May 16 from 9 – 11:30 a.m. All children interested in enrolling in any of Gateway’s Integrated Preschool Programs must participate in a preschool screening to be considered for a peer partner slot. Please call Karen Malinowski at 685-1017 to schedule a screening. \n  \nPreschool screenings are given to identify any concerns that parents might have about their child’s development. Screenings include a brief check of skills in the following areas: cognitive/thinking skills\, speech and language skills\, fine and gross motor skills\, social/emotional skills and preschool readiness skills. In addition\, parents are asked to fill out a questionnaire; no additional paperwork is needed at the screening. Parents will be notified in writing about the screening results by mid-June\, and any next steps will be recommended. \n  \nChildren must be age 3 by May 13 in order to be screened. Children who turn age 3 after this date will be screened in the fall. Children must live in the Gateway Regional School District (Blandford\, Chester\, Huntington\, Middlefield\, Montgomery or Russell); school choice does not apply to preschool. Children who are already enrolled in a Gateway preschool program do not need to participate in screening/registration. Screenings are by appointment only and will take approximately 45 minutes. \n  \nIn the 2019-2020 school year\, Gateway will offer morning or afternoon preschool sessions at Littleville Elementary Schools\, Tuesday through Friday. Full day Preschool (Monday through Friday\, 9 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.) is offered at Chester Elementary School and Gateway Middle/High School. Full day preschool is primarily reserved for children who will be 4 years old by September 1. \n  \nA Preschool Parent Information Night for families who wish to learn more about Gateway’s Integrated Preschool Program has been scheduled for Tuesday\, May7 from 6 – 7 p.m. at Littleville. Free childcare will be provided and each family attending will receive a free book. \n  \nIf the number of screenings exceeds the number of available preschool openings\, peer partners will be determined by a lottery. Parents will be notified by mid-June if their child is accepted for enrollment. Parents must transport their children; bussing is only provided for children who receive preschool as part of their special education plan. \n  \nThere is no tuition charged to attend preschool. Contact Susan Rhoads (685-1312) if you have specific questions about preschool.

SUMMARY:Third Annual Interfaith Vigil on Domestic Violence
DESCRIPTION:A Third Annual Interfaith Candlelight Vigil on Domestic Violence will be held on May 9th\, from 7-7:30 p.m. on the Huntington Town Greens\, and will be followed by an informal gathering in Stanton Hall\, adjacent to the Town Greens. All those from the hilltowns and surrounding communities are invited. \n  \nThe Vigil will honor all those who have been impacted by domestic violence\, and will bring attention to the role of the faith community in ending domestic violence. Event planners point to research that says during a trauma\, people are five times more likely to seek the aid of clergy than any other profession. \n  \nVigil planners say they want to make it clear that the hilltown faith community supports and stands ready to help anyone who faces abuse or violence. Last year\, advocates from Hilltown Safety at Home worked with more than 75 victims and survivors of domestic violence. \n  \nIn March of this year\, Luke Karpinski of Sheffield\, killed himself\, his wife Justine Wilbur\, and their 3 children. In January of this year\, Blake Scanlon of Westfield\, fatally stabbed his girlfriend Alexis Avery. Also in January\, Nelson Cardona of Northampton killed his wife\, Karina Nieves\, and himself\, leaving their 3 young daughters without a living parent. \n  \nIn the event of rain\, the Vigil will be held in Stanton Hall\, adjacent to the Huntington Town greens. The vigil is sponsored by members of the Hilltown Domestic Violence Interfaith Initiative\, a group supported by the Southern Hilltown Domestic Violence Task Force.

SUMMARY:Upcoming History and Genealogy Program at WSPL
DESCRIPTION:Mom’s WWII Letters: Reconstructing History & Genealogy—with Corinne Smith\, Tuesday\, May 7th from 6:30-8:00pm. In May 2017\, Corinne Smith found her mother’s stash of more than 100 letters from 16 servicemen she had corresponded with in 1944-1945. Corinne began to trace the soldiers’ family trees with one goal in mind: to return the letters in person to their children. This presentation links history and genealogy to present-day research and diligence. It revisits a time that we may not want to forget—and it may prompt others to wonder what treasures lurk in their own old family boxes\, and how they can share the information with others. This program is free\, and open to the public. Funding for this program was provided by the WSAC. The West Springfield Public Library is located at 200 Park Street. For more information on these programs call: 413-736-4561 ext. 3\, or stop by the Library’s Adult Services Desk.
