DESCRIPTION:Jack Jonah Foundation\, a registered 501(c)3 charity\, will hold a 5k walk on Saturday\, May 4. Registration is at 10 am\, walk at 11 am at the Holyoke Elks\, Ashley Reservoir\, Holyoke. This is the foundation’s inaugural fundraising event to bring awareness to the community about the opioid crisis and to honor those lost to opioid overdoses. Featured speakers before the walk at 10:45am will be Hampden County Sheriff Nick Cocchi and Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni. A post walk reception will be held immediately following at the Holyoke Elks Club\, 250 Whitney Ave\, Holyoke\, MA. The mission of the Jack Jonah Foundation is to encourage\, foster\, teach\, engage and provide opportunities\, specifically in the areas of opioid awareness\, and to provide assistance\, financial or otherwise\, to promote drug awareness and education. Jack Jonah was a young man who accidentally overdosed in 2016. The foundation is dedicated to his memory and works to help individuals and families impacted by drugs\, and educate the community so tragedies such as Jack’s passing will never happen again.

DESCRIPTION:The Agawam Library is pleased to host two art exhibits during the month of May. The digital photography on the gallery walls is from local photographer\, Karen Foss. Karen is an amateur photographer specializing in travel photography. Her exhibits document today’s American landscape using a colorful collection of nature\, farming\, landscapes and roadside memorabilia. All of Karen’s photos are taken in available light and there is no computer enhancement of her work. \n  \nIn the Children’s Room and in the glass cases\, we feature Agawam’s Smart Start Preschool. The creative and colorful artwork was created by their students ages 3 to 5. SUMMARY:Western Mass Hilltown Hikers Event
DESCRIPTION:Western Mass Hilltown Hikers and Hilltown Land Trust group hike Round Top Hill in Chester\, Saturday\, April 27th at 10:00 am. We follow a section of Unkamit’s Path\, a white blazed scenic trail which includes the top of Round Top Hill\, a grassy open summit with spectacular 360 degree views\, the highest point in Hampden County elevation 1\,780 feet and 5th highest in Massachusetts. Hikers will stumble upon and all three Geological markers and sign the guestbook in the cache. This is a unique forest with shagbark trees\, rocky outcroppings\, high elevation birds and spring wildflowers. This hike has 400 foot elevation gains to the summit\, be prepared for uphill climbing (downhill follows the fire road which is less steep) as well as the continuous amazing view along the edge during the decent. This is Hilltown Land Trust Conservation Land made public to hikers through the generosity of land owners. \n  \nMeet at the entrance of the Griffin Brook Road parking lot in the Chester Blandford State Forest off of Round Hill Road. Take Route 20 or Route 23 to Blandford Road in Chester (do not take Round Hill Road from route 20) turn onto Round Hill Road (Chester Town Line side)\, take a left at the cemetery and first right into the parking lot. You may park in front of the cemetery as well. There will be signs where to park. Plan for two hours to complete the loop. Although the trail is easily traveled and well-marked\, be prepared for mud. Weather depending\, bring walking sticks and spikes. \n  \nMaps and bottled water will be provided. Please be aware that there are no facilities at the trail. Dogs are welcome! We plan to surpass that this year with amazing items up for bids including: autographed Tom Brady jerseys\, Red Sox and Bruins jerseys. \n  \nAlso\, you can purchase raffle tickets for a week in Ireland. The first 500 people to enter will receive a Saint Mary’s bag with their raffle tickets at the door! The gym is filling up with tables displaying dozens of auction items. SUMMARY:Celebrate Earth Day with the Westfield River Cleanup Volunteer Program
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers along the Westfield River and its streams will celebrate Earth Day on Saturday\, April 27 by cleaning up the banks of the Westfield River watershed. According to Mark Damon\, coordinator for the Westfield River Watershed Association (WRWA)\, people can just show up at one of the gathering sites to participate in the morning’s cleanup. \n  \nWRWA encourages people to come and join them for the morning on Saturday\, April 27. Volunteers for the Spring 2019 Westfield River cleanup will gather at one of two locations by 9:00 a.m.\, meeting in Westfield in the public parking lot at the end of Meadow Street near the green bridge or in Agawam at the Pynchon Point parking lot near the South End bridge circle on River Road. WRWA will distribute gloves and trash bags and offer safety tips\, then send off site teams. Note that most of the cleanup is done from shore—no river wading needed! Organizers target watershed sites in Westfield\, Russell\, Huntington\, West Springfield and Agawam. Assignments are generally completed by 1:00 pm or earlier. \n  \nEveryone is welcome; children must be supervised by an adult. WRWA will arrange with local communities for pickup of trash and debris recovered at each site. SUMMARY:WHOA! Springtime Activities Begin
DESCRIPTION:Woronoco Heights Outdoor Adventures (WHOA!) will welcome the arrival of spring with activities for families and groups on Saturday April 27 from 9am to 3pm using the facilities of the Horace Moses Scout Reservation. The 1300 acre camp is at 310 Birch hill Rd. in Russell MA\, just 20 minutes from I-90 Exit 3. \n  \nPlanned are 14 different activities this month. Participation is open to all families and activities for children as young as 5 years old are offered as well as activities interesting to older youth and adults. Membership in Scouting is not required. Back on the schedule this month are Mountain Bikes and Disc Golf. For mountain biking participants can bring their own or have one provided. \n  \nBeing added for April are Birding and Kite Building. Birding offers a chance to see species not normally found at backyard feeders. Birders are encouraged to bring binoculars. Kites will be built from scratch and if wind is present a chance to see if yours will fly. \n  \nPopular activities from the winter season will also continue. The Black Smith Shop will be open for trying your hand at a small project\, and this month there will be two escape rooms to provide beginners and experienced players appropriate challenges. \n  \nSeveral target ranges will be open with age restrictions. Tomahawk throwing\, BB rifles\, black powder rifle\, and small caliber pistols are all planned for the day. \n  \nThe entire day is $15 per person\, with youth 5 to 9 years $10. Groups of 10 or more are discounted at $10 per person. Pre-registration isn’t required but encouraged using www.wmascouting.org/WHOA. Groups are requested to contact Director Mike Kirby by emailing WHOAdirector@gmail.com to mutually plan a perfect day. Equipment will be provided and activities will be supervised by experienced staff. \n  \nEach program is available from 9 am until 3 pm and subject to change\, especially due to weather conditions. Some programs require signing up for a specific time period. Participants may arrive/leave at any time. Check-in\, which begins at 8:45 am\, is at the camp’s Trading Post where a menu of hot food and snacks will also be for sale. DESCRIPTION:ArtWalk Westfield\, a free art and cultural experience that takes each month in downtown Westfield\, will feature a unique mix of local and regional artists on Friday evening April 26th from 5pm to 7pm in pop-up art galleries located in the Gaslight Gallery District along Elm Street between Church and School Streets. \n  \nImmediately following the ArtWalk experience\, ArtWorks Westfield has partnered with Westfield On Weekends and Westfield Creative Arts to present ArtWalk After Hours from 5-7pm at Westfield Creative Arts\, 105 Elm Street in downtown Westfield\, one block north of the Gaslight Gallery District. The “ArtWalk After Party”\, a coffee house featuring live\, local musicians in the intimate setting of the WCA Gallery\, is free to the general public and those who have attended the evening’s ArtWalk to meet up and continue to enjoy local arts. \n  \nApril ArtWalk Westfield will feature several artists who are making their Westfield gallery debuts while two Westfield-based artists will be back to showcase their new collections. All artists will be on hand at each pop up gallery location to answer questions and chat about their work. Most pieces of art work will be available for purchase. \n  \nArtWalk Westfield is held on the third Friday of each month from 5-7pm May through August\, featuring a different mix of artist and artistic mediums each month. SUMMARY:Diocese to host major relic of St. John Vianney as part of nationwide tour
DESCRIPTION:A relic of St. John Vianney will be visiting the Diocese of Springfield April 25-April 28. The saint\, who died in 1859\, was a dedicated pastor in Ars\, France\, who became known in particular as a confessor\, often spending up to 16 hours a day listening to and absolving sins. \n  \nThe relic will arrive in the diocese on Thursday\, April 25 at St. Mary’s Church\, 30 Bartlett St.\, in Westfield where there will be veneration from 7 a.m. until noon along with Masses at 8:30 a.m. and noon. The relic will be present at both Masses and Bishop Rozanski will celebrate the noon Mass. \n  \nAt noon on Saturday\, April 27\, the relic will first be placed in the Mother of Mercy Outdoor Shrine at The Divine Mercy Shrine\, 2 Prospect Hill Rd.\, in Stockbridge. The relic will remain there until after the 4 p.m. Mass. The celebrant will bless the congregants by lifting the relic after the homily. On Saturday evening\, April 27\, there will be veneration of the relic at St. Joseph’s Church\, 414 North St. in Pittsfield from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. On Sunday\, April 28 it will return to Divine Mercy Shrine from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. \n  \nThe Shrine of Ars has made this major relic\, the in-corrupt heart of the saint\, available for a national tour in the U.S.\, which began in November 2018 and will run through early June of this year.
