SUMMARY:HOW WESTFIELD BECAME KNOWN AS THE “BASEBALL TOWN”
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dan Genovese\, Wednesday\, April 24\, 2019\, First Congregational Church. Free and open to the public. Baseball is America’s Game and Westfield is known as a baseball town\, a “badge of honor” that is earned\, so how did it start? The game was not invented by Abner Doubleday\, instead it evolved and 19th century Westfield helped to shape the game we love. This presentation will cover our earliest days of “pre-baseball”\, the pride and passion of our town teams and Westfield’s first two hometown MLB players. \n  \nPresented by Dan Genovese\, author and historian of Westfield baseball history\, winner of the 2010 Westfield Historical Commission’s Annual Preservation Award and Captain and Re-Founder of the Westfield Wheelmen Base Ball Club.

SUMMARY:Fundraiser to Benefit the Alzheimer’s Association
DESCRIPTION:The Pioneer Valley Friends of Alzheimer’s Association will be holding its fifth annual Alzheimer’s Benefit Gala at the Log Cabin on Saturday\, April 13\, 2019 at 5:30 PM. The festivities will include live entertainment\, great food\, and wonderful raffles. Entertainment will include Sarah the Fiddler\, Decades and Now’s the Time Jazz Sextet. Our host for the evening will be the lovely Ashley Kohl. \n  \nWe will also feature the sale of artwork created by residents of Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing Communities that are located throughout Western Massachusetts. This part of the program—“Painting the Face on Alzheimer’s”—will include art that was created using the “memories method.” This method focuses on the process of creating by encouraging self-expression through art among those facing dementia. For these individuals\, the axiom that “a picture is worth a thousand words” rings true as their ability to communicate in traditional ways may decrease but the need to communicate remains. \n  \nThis year we are honoring Beth Cardillo for the impact she has made in raising awareness about the effects of dementia on individuals\, families and entire communities in Western Mass. Over the past 14 years Beth’s efforts have resulted in significant funds for the Alzheimer’s Association as well as the development of programs and initiatives including the Virtual Dementia Experience and Dementia Friendly Westfield. The Dementia Friendly initiative opened the doors for the rest of Massachusetts to follow suit. The evening’s proceeds will fund various educational programs for the local Alzheimer’s Association Chapter\, Walk to End Alzheimer’s\, and referral services for families who have loved ones with the disease. \n  \nTickets are $60 per person or $570 for a table of 10. For online ticket orders\, go to www. Eventbrite.com. Tickets may also be purchased by contacting Claudette Swaby at 413-636-5462 or cchaddansm@gmail.com. Please make checks payable to: PVFAA (Pioneer Valley Friends of Alzheimer’s Association) at P.O. Box 78\, Agawam\, MA 01001.

SUMMARY:Chicago Total Access performance to benefit Westfield Police Auxiliary
DESCRIPTION:Chicago tribute band Chicago Total Access (chicagototalaccess.com) will be the featured performer for a unique community event benefitting the Westfield Police Auxiliary 7:30 p.m. on Friday April 12\, 2019 at the Westfield Technical Academy upper campus auditorium. \n  \nThe funds generated from this event will go a long way to support of new equipment for the volunteers of the Auxiliary to help keep our community safe during major outdoor events in our city such as parades\, our first ever First Night\, Concerts on the Green\, PumpkinFest and more. This benefit was conceived by Westfield on Weekends president\, Jay Pagluica. \n  \nChicago Total Access is a music group made up of 10 talented musicians who all grew up listening to American and British pop/rock\, jazz\, blues\, rhythm and blues\, Motown\, acid rock. They’ve been influenced by music from the 40’s to the 70’s as well as classical music from the ages. There is no other American rock n roll band with horns that has influenced more musicians\, is loved by millions of people worldwide\, and has become such a deep part of Americana as the band Chicago. Since 1967\, through 46 years of sold out concerts\, millions of record sales\, and legions of cheering fans worldwide Chicago is still going strong in 2013. The members of Chicago Total Access have attempted to recreate a slice of the timeless musical catalog of Chicago as well as stay true to the spirit of the original recordings. We hope you enjoy their efforts! The liner notes of Chicago’s first recording titled “The Chicago Transit Authority” still inspire Total Access band members and they hope you\, as well — “The printed word can never aspire to document a truly musical experience\, so if you must call them something\, speak of the city where all save one were born; where all of them were schooled and bred\, and where all of this incredible music went down barely noticed; call them CHICAGO.” \n  \nTickets for the show are available on line at www.purplepass.com\, at Rocky’s Ace Hardware in Westfield or by calling 800-316-8559. This is a hi-energy\, explosive show band dedicated to covering the band’s catalog that spans over 45 years. The audience will have “total access” to the music of Chicago.
