SUMMARY:High school offering ASVAB Exam
DESCRIPTION:Gateway Regional High School will offer the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) Career Exploration Program to interested juniors and seniors on Tuesday\, April 9. There is no cost to take the ASVAB. \n  \nThe ASVAB Program is a career exploration and planning program that includes a multiple-aptitude test battery\, an interest inventory\, and career planning tools designed to help students explore the world of work. It usually takes 3 hours to complete and will begin at 8 a.m. on April 9. \n  \nThis exam can help students identify their interests\, skills and work-related values; match those with occupations; learn where and how to get information on different careers; and develop career decision-making skills. \n  \nASVAB was originally developed by the U.S. Department of Defense for military-related purposes\, and students must take the ASVAB to enter a variety of military careers. Students wishing to join the military should take this test. However\, the ASVAB Program has been re-designed so that all students\, regardless of their plans after high school\, can learn more about themselves and identify potentially satisfying careers. Students and parents are advised that test results will not be released to the military services\, and test-takers are under no obligation to enter the military. \n  \nBecause the ASVAB is optional\, students wishing to participate must sign up in Guidance by April 5. Interested students will receive a permission slip to bring home to get parental permission. Please contact the Gateway High School Guidance Office (685-1107) if you have any questions about this opportunity.

SUMMARY:Downtown Westfield Seeking 350th Inspired Utility Box Muralists
DESCRIPTION:Westfield on Weekends has issued a Call to Artists for a unique place-making opportunity in Downtown. WOW is searching for artists to submit their ideas and designs to beautify three utility boxes located in the Gaslight District\, in order to increase walkability and infuse the streetscape with accessible art during Westfield’s 350th Birthday celebration on May 18-19. The two existing boxes\, with the theme of “Celebrate Westfield” are located in front of Fast Feet and the Olver PVTA station Downtown. \n  \nPrograms to create non-conventional murals are not new; cities such as Boston\, Northampton\, and Easthampton have all carried out similar beautification programs in their cities\, to great success. WOW is funding this program through a Westfield Cultural Council grant. The three boxes to be painted in 2019 are located in front of Blue Umbrella Books\, Baystate Dental\, and Stop and Shop. They will be painted live during the 350th Celebration immediately following the Run Westfield 5K. \n  \nThe theme all artists are asked to adhere to is “Westfield’s 350th”. Artists are invited to submit their ideas to paint the boxes to the selection committee. The artists which are chosen will be paid for their time and reimbursed for materials. Applications are due April 22\, and are available online\, or by contacting Ms. Drewniany. \n  \nWestfield on Weekends is a nonprofit transforming Westfield at the intersection of community and creativity. We work to increase the scope of arts\, cultural\, and economic life along the Elm Street corridor to make the city a better place for residents\, businesses\, and visitors \n  \nThe request for proposal and more details on this program can be found at WestfieldOnWeekends.Com/Utility-Box-Painting-Project.html. Any questions can be forwarded to Morgan Drewniany at morgandrewniany@gmail.com or 413-454-1195.

SUMMARY:Western Mass Hilltown Hikers group hike Dynamite Box Trail
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 30th 10:00 am. Chester-Blandford State Forest is a publicly owned forest with recreational features located in the two towns for which it is named; this is the final one of three that we will explore this winter. Join us for approximately a two hour hike starting at Sanderson Brook Road which runs along Sanderson Brook to the top of Sanderson Falls\, then past the waterfall vista\, the CCC camp chimney\, we will then be at the 4 trail junction in the middle of the State Forest. We will then head up the Dynamite Box Trail\, hiking the pine forest on this trail passing a swamp and beaver dam\, crossing a stream\, and then work our way uphill to higher ground in Blandford. We will then descend by completing this loop with amazing views on Beulah Land Road and continue back down Sanderson Brook to the parking lot. For those looking for a shorter hike\, simply hike to the Falls\, which we will pass and then return the way we came after spending some time at the Falls. To the falls and back is a one hour hike. NOTE: If weather/hiking conditions are poor we will only hike to the Falls and back. \n  \nMeet at the Sanderson Falls parking lot on Route 20 in Chester across from Bannish Lumber. The trail is a wide logging road\, with no footpaths to Dynamite Box. Dynamite Box Trail may be icy and/or muddy at this time of year and is not flat so be prepared and wear appropriate gear\, boots\, spikes\, poles or snowshoes. Expect loose rocks and roots and water. \n  \nDepending on the weather conditions the week before\, be prepared for mud\, snow and ice. Maps and bottled water will be provided. Please be aware that there are no facilities at the trail. Dogs are welcome! No registration required\, hike is free\, donations are welcome! \n  \nThis event is co-sponsored by SHAEC and the JLBA. SUMMARY:They Called Her Reckless
DESCRIPTION:Mark the date: Wednesday\, March 20\, 2019 at 6:30 pm at the Westfield Athenaeum for a fascinating program about the real warhorse! When the U.S. Marine Fifth Regiment’s Recoilless Rifle Platoon acquired a small Korean pony to haul ammunition up the steep hills to the front lines\, they got a real-life warhorse\, the courageous and indomitable Reckless\, who stood with her buddies for two years during the Korean War\, saving lives\, raising spirits\, and winning the love and respect of all who knew her. \n  \nShe came on base in October\, 1952\, disrupting a softball game and capturing the attention of everyone around. Immediately named for the “reckless” rifles she would supply\, she began life with the Marines as Private First Class Reckless\, and in short order was an integral member of the platoon. In skirmishes and firefights\, and ultimately in the savage Battle for Outpost Vegas\, Reckless showed her bravery and resilience. In that last bloody fight\, surpassing all expectations\, she hauled ammunition for three days and nights wherever it was needed. For wounds sustained\, she was awarded two Purple Hearts. \n  \nEver the character\, she also shared her buddies’ C-rations and mess hall chow\, beers and an occasional whiskey\, and on cold nights\, their warm tents. She was promoted to sergeant by the Commander of the Marine First Division\, and soon thereafter\, sailed for San Francisco\, a hero’s welcome\, and a new life. \n  \nJoin us on Wednesday\, March 20\, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. to hear Reckless’ story as told by Janet Barrett\, author of the first full biography of this amazing warhorse. Enriched by the memories of more than 60 Marines who knew her in Korea and thereafter\, They Called Her Reckless tells of an incredible human-horse connection\, and the power it unleashed. Copies of the book\, signed by the author\, will be for sale at this event.
