DESCRIPTION:Devil Dogs will be prowling the Westfield Common for a good cause on Sunday\, March 31. The members of the honor society of the Westfield Valley Detachment 141 of the Marine Corps League will be collecting donations for the Shriners Hospital in Springfield from 10 am until 1 pm\, weather permitting. \n  \nQuabbin Valley Pound 276 of the Military Order of Devil Dogs includes Marine veterans from across western Massachusetts and as far east as Southbridge\, according to Pound Keeper Tom Pirnie. It is devoted to helping community organizations help the community\, he said. \n  \nThe name Devil Dogs stems from the World War I Battle for Belleau Wood and the German nickname for the Marines\, who fought tenaciously in stopping the German advance on Paris. SUMMARY:Western Mass Hilltown Hikers group hike Dynamite Box Trail
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 30th 10:00 am. Chester-Blandford State Forest is a publicly owned forest with recreational features located in the two towns for which it is named; this is the final one of three that we will explore this winter. Join us for approximately a two hour hike starting at Sanderson Brook Road which runs along Sanderson Brook to the top of Sanderson Falls\, then past the waterfall vista\, the CCC camp chimney\, we will then be at the 4 trail junction in the middle of the State Forest. We will then head up the Dynamite Box Trail\, hiking the pine forest on this trail passing a swamp and beaver dam\, crossing a stream\, and then work our way uphill to higher ground in Blandford. We will then descend by completing this loop with amazing views on Beulah Land Road and continue back down Sanderson Brook to the parking lot. For those looking for a shorter hike\, simply hike to the Falls\, which we will pass and then return the way we came after spending some time at the Falls. To the falls and back is a one hour hike. NOTE: If weather/hiking conditions are poor we will only hike to the Falls and back. \n  \nMeet at the Sanderson Falls parking lot on Route 20 in Chester across from Bannish Lumber. The trail is a wide logging road\, with no footpaths to Dynamite Box. Dynamite Box Trail may be icy and/or muddy at this time of year and is not flat so be prepared and wear appropriate gear\, boots\, spikes\, poles or snowshoes. Expect loose rocks and roots and water. \n  \nDepending on the weather conditions the week before\, be prepared for mud\, snow and ice. Maps and bottled water will be provided. SUMMARY:Donuts and Deadlifts Fundraiser to benefit Special Olympics Powerlifting Team
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, the sport of Powerlifting joined the lineup of Greater Springfield Special Olympics teams for the first time\, competing in the Summer Games at Harvard University. In their first year\, all six athletes earned medals and awards for their performance. \n  \nThe 2019 team has grown to include eight young men; Gregory Gousy of East Longmeadow\, Vincent Pirro of Feeding Hills\, Chad Diclementi of Agawam\, Josh Gregoire of Chicopee\, Gilberto Molina of Westfield\, and William Bradford\, Nathan Pelletier and Angel Roman\, all of Springfield. \n  \nThe team is training at PowerClean Fitness (PCF) in East Longmeadow\, under the guidance of PCF owner Michael Zolkiewicz\, a professional Highland Games and Strongman athlete who has worked as a strength coach and personal trainer for 19 years. Joining the all-volunteer coaches this year to provide additional training expertise for the athletes is Justin Fisher\, a world-class\, award-winning Strongman competitor. \n  \nTo raise funds to buy team gear\, PCF is hosting its annual deadlifting competition “Donuts and Deadlifts” on Saturday March 30th at 9 a.m. at PowerClean Fitness\, 45 Baldwin St.\, East Longmeadow. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Special Olympics team. Many of the Special Olympics athletes will be competing in the deadlifting\, and the public is encouraged to come join in the excitement and support all the competitors – while enjoying a donut! \n  \nTo enroll in the competition\, call 413 526-9800. Cost is $5 for members\, $10 for non-members and $3 for spectators. \n  \nPowerlifting is one of the fastest growing sports among the six events at the games. DESCRIPTION:What happens when someone is apprehended and placed under arrest? That’s the new Talk of the Town program airing on Westfield’s Community Public Access Channel 15\, according to the program’s creator\, host and executive producer Roberta Page\, president of Page One Productions\, LLC of West Springfield. \n  \nTalk of the Town went on location in 2018 to the Westfield Police Department to follow from the time a cruiser with a prisoner is at the department’s garage door opening until the prisoner is released from detention. Community Police Lieutenant Eric Hall assisted with the narration. Westfield Police Officer Juanita Mejias\, graciously\, served as the handcuffed “prisoner” and Officer Douglas LaValley as the “arresting” officer. \n  \nThe program will start airing the week of March 25th and will continue to air Sundays at 6 a.m. and 10 a.m.\, Mondays at 11 p.m.\, Tuesdays at 10 a.m.\, Thursdays at 5 p.m.\, and Fridays at 7 p.m. time slots and will continue through the end of May. \n  \nTalk of the Town is a program featuring and showcasing people\, places and things making differences in the community and beyond. DESCRIPTION:For several years\, Jeff Halls from Baystate Hearing Aids has been at the Westfield Senior Center\, 45 Noble Street\, on the fourth Wednesday of every month from 10 a.m. to noon. Because of an increased demand for this type of service\, Gary Wynn owner of New Ears in Southwick will be at the Senior Center on the second Wednesday of every month from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Both Jeff and Gary are Licensed Hearing Instrument Specialists. They evaluate each participant’s needs on an individual basis including accurate hearing screening\, in-the-canal earwax inspection\, hearing aid cleaning\, and free minor repairs including tubing replacements. Visits are approximately 15 to 30 minutes in length. The informational and testing services provided at the Westfield Senior Center are free of charge to those who have an appointment. Shelly Melanson Goncalves will present her extensive hand fan collection. Shelly\, originally from Agawam\, has been collecting fans since she was a young girl\, and is a member of the Fan Association of North America. Her collection includes 18th and 19th century European\, Asian\, and Art Deco hand fans. She is a former Chicopee School teacher and currently is a substitute teacher in Newburyport\, MA. Please bring your favorite fan! The public is welcome\, and encouraged to join the Association. \n  \nThe Agawam Historical Association (AHA)\, a 501(c) (3) non- profit organization\, has been part of the Agawam community for many years with the mission to preserve the Town’s history and artifacts and to educate the citizens of Agawam. The Thomas Smith House\, located in Feeding Hills\, is the oldest existing house in Agawam (circa 1757) and was purchased by the AHA. The Fire House Museum on Elm Street\, currently under renovation\, houses antique fire trucks and apparatus on the ground floor and contains artifacts\, memorabilia and exhibits from Agawam and neighboring areas on the second floor.

DESCRIPTION:Westfield State University will host a Westfield Wednesdays 350th Anniversary Historical Lecture Series event titled “When Two Worlds Meet: Native Americans of Western MA\,” on Wednesday\, March 20 at 6:30 p.m. on Dever Stage in Parenzo Hall\, 577 Western Ave.\, Westfield. \n  \nThe event will be presented by Gail White Usher\, education coordinator at Roseland Cottage and Arnold House\, both of which are maintained by Historic New England\, the oldest and largest regional heritage foundation in the United States. The lecture will focus on what daily life was like for the Native American inhabitants of Westfield; the Woronack\, Pocumtuck\, and various Eastern Woodlands tribes before\, during\, and after European populations settled in the area. In addition\, it will highlight how the tribes retained their cultural identities from 1620 through 1750. \n  \nThe event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Mark the date: Wednesday\, March 20\, 2019 at 6:30 pm at the Westfield Athenaeum for a fascinating program about the real warhorse! When the U.S. Marine Fifth Regiment’s Recoilless Rifle Platoon acquired a small Korean pony to haul ammunition up the steep hills to the front lines\, they got a real-life warhorse\, the courageous and indomitable Reckless\, who stood with her buddies for two years during the Korean War\, saving lives\, raising spirits\, and winning the love and respect of all who knew her. \n  \nShe came on base in October\, 1952\, disrupting a softball game and capturing the attention of everyone around. Immediately named for the “reckless” rifles she would supply\, she began life with the Marines as Private First Class Reckless\, and in short order was an integral member of the platoon. In skirmishes and firefights\, and ultimately in the savage Battle for Outpost Vegas\, Reckless showed her bravery and resilience. In that last bloody fight\, surpassing all expectations\, she hauled ammunition for three days and nights wherever it was needed. For wounds sustained\, she was awarded two Purple Hearts. \n  \nEver the character\, she also shared her buddies’ C-rations and mess hall chow\, beers and an occasional whiskey\, and on cold nights\, their warm tents. She was promoted to sergeant by the Commander of the Marine First Division\, and soon thereafter\, sailed for San Francisco\, a hero’s welcome\, and a new life. \n  \nJoin us on Wednesday\, March 20\, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. to hear Reckless’ story as told by Janet Barrett\, author of the first full biography of this amazing warhorse. DESCRIPTION:To help homeowners and the town manage their water supply and manage storm water Westfield is offering residents the opportunity to buy discounted rain barrels. \n  \nCapturing and storing water at the home and the use of rain gardens are the two most effective ways to use rain water. Saving rain water helps homeowners save money. Rain water is free\, and it’s an excellent water source for plants\, gardens\, lawns and any other non-potable use. One tenth of an inch of rain on a 1000 square foot roof –about 25 minutes of moderate rainfall– will fill a 60-gallon Rain Barrel. New England typically receives 17” of rain during the growing season from May through September. This provides enough water to fill 170 Rain Barrels. \n  \nDroughts stress residential landscaping and town water facilities. In 2016\, 168 communities in Massachusetts faced restrictions on nonessential outdoor water use – 47% of the Cities and Towns in the state. There is no restriction on rainwater use. \n  \nWestfield chose to work with the Great American Rain Barrel Co.\, a local food importing company that has been repurposing shipping drums into Rain Barrels since 1988. Last year 30% of Massachusetts Cities and Towns partnered with The Great American Rain Barrel Co\, selling over 3000 barrels. Great American Rain Barrel Co has been approved vendors by the MASSDEP for the state since 2010. Barrels are being offered for $69. Barrels will be available for pick up on Tuesday\, April 30th at the Westfield DPW\, 28 Sackett St\, from 2PM – 6PM. Deadline for purchase is April 23rd\, Midnight. DESCRIPTION:Woronoco Heights Outdoor Adventures (WHOA!) will offer seasonal and special activities for families and groups on Saturday March 16 from 9am to 3pm using the facilities of the Horace Moses Scout Reservation. Each month from September to June WHOA! presents activities taking advantage of the reservation’s 1300 acre acres at 310 Birch hill Rd. in Russell MA\, just 20 minutes from I-90 Exit 3. \n  \nBlacksmith Dana Dupuis\, a competitor this season on the History Channel’s “Forged in Fire” series\, returns to the Blacksmith Shop to guide participants in a small project. \n  \nSnow Shelters and Winter Survival sessions are being presented by instructors from Earth Work Programs of Ashfield MA. Earth Work Programs is known for their outdoor training with courses including Wilderness Education\, Emergency Survival\, Self Sufficiency\, and Nature Connections. \n  \nMaple trees are being tapped\, and the sap is running when the nights are cold and the days are warm. Families will have the opportunity to snow shoe or hike as weather permits an old road through Woronoco Heights to a sugar shack\, about a 2 mile round trip\, where they will see sap being boiled into maple syrup. \n  \nOther planned activities include a unique escape room\, amateur radio\, disc golf\, geocaching\, ice fishing\, orienteering\, photography and snowshoeing. \n  \nParticipation is open to all families and activities for children as young as 5 years old are offered as well as activities for older youth and adults. Membership in Scouting is not required. The entire day is $15 per person\, with youth 5 to 9 years $10. Groups of 10 or more are discounted at $10 per person. Equipment will be provided and activities will be supervised by experienced staff. \n  \nEach program is available from 9 am until 3 pm and subject to change\, especially due to weather conditions. Some programs require signing up for a specific time period. Participants may arrive/leave at any time. Check-in is at the camp’s Trading Post where a menu of hot food and snacks will also be for sale. \n  \nAs warm weather arrives winter activities will be replaced with warm weather options\, including the camp’s renowned climbing tower and bouldering wall\, ATV’s\, and archery in the months ahead. \n  \nThe other dates WHOA! is open are April 27\, May 18\, and June 8.
