SUMMARY:Unify Against Bullying Announces Party to Launch their Fashion Show Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Unify Against Bullying will host a party on Monday\, March 11th\, 5:30 p.m. in the 3rdfloor community room located at One Financial Plaza\, 1350 Main Street\, Springfield\, Massachusetts. The event is the official kick off for their annual Unify Fashion Show fundraiser scheduled to take place on May 14th. The tickets go on sale that evening and are a hot commodity as the fashion show has been sold out the last four years! Palazzo’s Café\, located on the main floor of One Financial is generously providing the refreshments. \n  \nThe all-inclusive Fashion Show which is held at the Log Cabin in Holyoke\, Massachusetts will feature male and female teen models of all sizes\, shapes\, styles\, ethnicities\, sexual orientation and physical abilities. The students also create and participate in an anti-bullying performance. Proceeds from the event will benefit the tax-exempt organization Unify Against Bullying. \n  \nUnify Against Bullying is a tax-exempt organization whose mission is; to bring an end to bullying through the celebration of true diversity. Through fundraising efforts\, the organization has been able to award micro-grants to individuals and organizations that share that mission. Their “Selfie Challenge” is raising awareness globally to the silence that is associated with bullying. The Unify high school students are bringing education to those that it makes the most impact by a program that explains the effects of bullying to their younger peers. There are countless children and teens waging quiet battles against bullying. Many believe they are alone. Unify Against Bullying wants these children to know they are far from alone\, but are supported by a loving\, caring community of fellow students\, teachers\, parents and business and community leaders.

DESCRIPTION:The Greater Westfield Choral Association\, in conjunction with Westfield’s Second Congregational Church and Westfield’s 350th Celebration\, will be presenting their 42nd annual concert on Sunday\, March 10 at 3:00 pm at Second Church\, 487 Western Avenue in Westfield. \n  \nThe featured composer this season is George Frideric Handel. Both of those pieces will be accompanied by Scott Bailey on the church’s renowned organ\, originally built by the world-famous Johnson & Sons Organ Company of Westfield in 1857. The organ is considered by many to be one of the best instruments of its kind in the Pioneer Valley \n  \nThe Greater Westfield Choral Association is one of the longest continuing community choral groups in the Valley\, as a way to give local audiences an appreciation of classical sacred music. The group is made up of community members who simply love to sing. It’s a non-auditioned chorus and is open to anyone willing to work hard and devote the time necessary to bring the music to life.

Chefs will have the opportunity to showcase their cooking skills by cooking either a chili\, chowder or a sweet chocolate delight. The chili and chowder have to be cooked in a Board of Health approved kitchen. When registering\, specify the exact name of each dish in order for it to be printed in the right ballot category. Votes will be tallied by 1PM. The voting process is in the spirit of fun with the main goal of fundraising. The YMCA will provide the room\, tables\, and the paper goods. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday June 9th Tater Racing in a Commercial Co-Venture with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute\, Inc. will conduct Tri for Jimmy (formerly Wave Triathlon)\, a sporting event with Triathlons\, Duathlons\, Aqua Bike and Splash and Dash event options\, benefitting The Jimmy Fund. \n  \nThe “Sprint Distance” races consists of a combination of a .3 mi (~600 yd) swim in Pequot Pond or a 3 mi run at Hampton Ponds State Park\, followed by a 13 mi bike ride\, and a 3 mi run. \n  \nThe “Super Sprint” race consists of a combination of a 300 yd swim or a 300 yd run\, a 6.3 mi bike\, and a 1 mi run. These two workshops will offer drawing for ages 8-12 from 10:30-12:00 pm and oils for ages 13-17 from 1:30-3:00 pm. Youth Watercolor begins March 7 4:00-5:30 PM\, taught by Artist Lori Bothwell. \n  \nA graduate of University of Massachusetts with a degree in Fine art\, WCA instructor Lori Bothwell has a passion for teaching. Shannon Chiba is a board member with Artworks Westfield as well as professional artist for over 20 years\, specializing in drawing and painting\, \n  \nAll classes take place at Westfield Creative Arts at 105 Elm Street. DESCRIPTION:Made in Westfield – a look at manufacturing and industry in Westfield – presents 45 companies and their products spanning the 19th through 21st centuries. From the early industries of brick & ice making powder mills and furniture building to the more unique manufacturing of hoop skirts\, washer tubs\, extracts & flavors\, stoves\, marble\, bicycles\, whips\, paper\, golf clubs\, piano legs and pipe organs – Westfield made them all. The exhibit\, which runs through April 13th\, also showcases some of Westfield’s long-standing manufacturers & their products (Westfield Grinding Wheel\, Micro Abrasive\, Advance Manufacturing\, ITI\, H. B. Smith\, Mestek\, Stanley Home Products) as well as businesses of the past (Digital\, Foster Machine\, Stevens Paper\, Robinson Reminders\, Old Colony Envelope\, Colonial Art\, Knight Club Soda). \n  \nA reception will be held on March 26th at 6:30 p.m. highlighting some of Westfield’s current manufacturers: Micro Abrasive\, Westfield Grinding Wheel\, International Technology\, H. SUMMARY:History of the Westfield Normal School
DESCRIPTION:Panel Lecture Presentation and Historic Photography Exhibit\, Wednesday\, March 6 at Westfield State University. Lecture: Dever Stage\, Parenzo Hall 6:30 p.m. Historical photography exhibit: Arno Maris Gallery\, Ely Hall 2nd floor (open Wed. March 6 from 5:00-9:00 p.m.\, dessert reception and in gallery following lecture). \n  \nSpend an evening on the Westfield State University Campus for a special “Westfield Wednesdays” historical lecture series event offering a lecture and photography exhibit focused on the history of the Westfield Normal School. The lecture presentation at 6:30 on Dever Stage\, Parenzo Hall\, features three speakers who will discuss the history of the Westfield Normal School. Before or after the lecture\, visitors are invited to an exhibit of historical photos in the Arno Maris Gallery\, Ely Hall 2nd floor. A dessert reception and raffle will be hosted in the gallery following the lecture. \n  \nThe lecture will include three panelists. Professor Beth Ann Rothermel will present “’Dig Where You Stand’: Lessons from the WSU Archive.” From her research work in the WSU archives\, Prof. Rothermel will share a few of her more interesting observations about the Westfield Normal School’s history. Walter Fogg will present “Westfield’s Little Known School of Observation\,” a brief history of the Wyben schoolhouse from 1931 to 1939\, when it served as a school of observation for Westfield State Teachers College. Students studying in “Rural Education” were transported to the Wyben Schoolhouse to observe and to practice teach. During this period of time\, the schoolhouse was turned over to the College\, which assumed all administrative responsibilities for the school’s daily operations. Professor Mara Dodge will present “Westfield State University: Evolution & Transformation\, 1839-2010.” From its opening days in Barre\, MA as the nation’s first public\, co-educational “normal” school\, Prof. Dodge will trace the institution’s growth while addressing some popular myths and misperceptions about its storied history. \n  \nThe photography exhibit in the Arno Maris Gallery\, Ely Hall 2nd floor\, will feature historic photos of the Normal School and downtown buildings. Also featured will be photos by the Allen sisters\, who graduated from Westfield Normal School in 1876 pursuing a teaching career which they eventually gave up due to loss of hearing. In 1884 they began a very successful career in photography. They were pioneers in respect to being women in the arts. Their nostalgic mood was coveted in an age of increasing industrialization. Their technique of developing platinum prints enhanced this direction of nostalgia. The “Westfield State University Revisited: Archival Photographs and Artifacts” collection focuses on the inception and growth of Westfield State University. Highlighted are various presidents starting with Horace Mann and continuing with those of high expectations and amazing drive bringing the Normal School forward to become Westfield State College and now Westfield State University. Continuing where “Westfield State University Revisited” leaves off is a photographic essay featuring many of the original buildings still existing in Westfield showcasing a visual evolution of the town and many links it has to the university. Catalogs of the historic photo collections will be available for purchase. The exhibit will be up during the week of March 4-9 (Tuesday\, Wednesday\, Thursday\, Friday 10:00 – 2:00). On Wednesday evening\, March 6\, directly following the lecture\, guests are invited to walk over to Ely Hall to visit the gallery\, enjoy dessert\, and participate in a raffle. To accommodate Wednesday’s events the gallery will also be open from 5:00-9:00 pm.

Learn about this on-going project and hear some of the stories of the men & their relatives. DESCRIPTION:The Agawam United Methodist Church at 459 Mill Street in Feeding Hills and Christ Church United Methodist at 222 College Highway in Southwick are offering a drive-thru Ash Wednesday blessing for all those who are either too busy to attend a full worship service somewhere or who have limited mobility or health issues. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Christian season of Lent\, which concludes after 40 days with the celebration of Easter Sunday. \n  \nPastor Ken Blanchard will offer ashes for people of any and all Christian denominations on Wednesday March 6 at two times and locations: Agawam UMC (Feeding Hills) 7:00am-9:00am at the circular driveway in front of the church; and Christ Church United Methodist (Southwick) 11:30am-1:30pm at the driveway between the church and the Food Pantry. \n  \nIn addition to anointing foreheads with ashes\, the blessing will include a scripture reading and a brief prayer. This is the first time such an approach is being offered in Southwick\, and it will be offered instead of a traditional Ash Wednesday worship service inside the building. These are the types of topics that can be covered during our new “Book-A-Librarian” sessions. Beginning Mondays in March\, patrons are invited to “Book-A-Librarian” for a one-on-one library instruction session. This new service will connect Agawam residents with a professional librarian for customized\, library-related skill-building. Participants will reserve 30 minutes of individualized instruction on Monday evenings beginning in March. Depending on the demand\, additional days and times may be added. SUMMARY:Friends of the Westfield Senior Center Hosts “Westfield Trivia!”
DESCRIPTION:As part of Westfield’s 350th anniversary celebration\, the Friends of the Westfield Senior Center group is hosting ‘Westfield Trivia!’ on Sunday\, March 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. This unique trivia game fundraising event will feature five rounds of questions asked by local ‘celebrity’ hosts. Between each round\, entertainment will be provided by the members of New England Dance and Gymnastics performance team. This group is comprised of youth aged 7 to 13 who are interested in participating in community activities. Half of the trivia questions will be related to Westfield history. Each team will consist of seven members. You may form your own team or a partial team when you purchase your event ticket. Each member of the first-place winning team will receive a $25 gift certificate to the Short Stop Bar & Grill. To add to the fun\, we’ll have a 50/50 drawing and a Lucky Lottery Leprechaun boasting $100 worth of lottery tickets. Each attendee will take home a scrumptious ice cream sundae to be distributed as participants leave the event. ‘Westfield Trivia!’ is a fundraiser for the Friends of the Westfield Senior Center. Having furnished the entire Senior Center\, the ongoing mission of the Friends group is to provide enhancements to the programs and activities of the Center through fundraising\, advocacy\, and facility improvement. Tickets are $5 and must be purchased in advance at the Senior Center. Seating is limited. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Wednesday\, February 6. There is no limit on the number of tickets purchased. The snow date is Sunday\, March 31.

DESCRIPTION:Due to popular demand\, the YMCA of Greater Westfield is offering another Awareness\, Safety and Protect: Self-Defense Series for three Sunday afternoons. Each Sunday you will get workouts that will maximum physical efficiency and self-confidence to help deal with a variety of situations. You will learn how to quickly disable an attacker and learn how to take advantage of time and space. You will learn various stances\, striking motions\, kicks\, choke holds\, and other defense techniques to help protect yourself. Learn to prepare for the unexpected! The instructor\, Catlin McCue\, is a certified R.A.D.\, rape aggression defense\, instructor. This program is based on realistic self-defense tactics taught for woman only. The Sunday dates are March 3\, 10 & 17 from 12:30 PM to 1:45 PM. Girls 14 and 15 of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Registration is required. Space is limited.
