DESCRIPTION:Made in Westfield – a look at manufacturing and industry in Westfield – presents 45 companies and their products spanning the 19th through 21st centuries. From the early industries of brick & ice making powder mills and furniture building to the more unique manufacturing of hoop skirts\, washer tubs\, extracts & flavors\, stoves\, marble\, bicycles\, whips\, paper\, golf clubs\, piano legs and pipe organs – Westfield made them all. The exhibit\, which runs through April 13th\, also showcases some of Westfield’s long-standing manufacturers & their products (Westfield Grinding Wheel\, Micro Abrasive\, Advance Manufacturing\, ITI\, H. B. Smith\, Mestek\, Stanley Home Products) as well as businesses of the past (Digital\, Foster Machine\, Stevens Paper\, Robinson Reminders\, Old Colony Envelope\, Colonial Art\, Knight Club Soda). \n  \nA reception will be held on March 26th at 6:30 p.m. highlighting some of Westfield’s current manufacturers: Micro Abrasive\, Westfield Grinding Wheel\, International Technology\, H. B. DESCRIPTION:Panel Lecture Presentation and Historic Photography Exhibit\, Wednesday\, March 6 at Westfield State University. March 6 from 5:00-9:00 p.m.\, dessert reception and in gallery following lecture). \n  \nSpend an evening on the Westfield State University Campus for a special “Westfield Wednesdays” historical lecture series event offering a lecture and photography exhibit focused on the history of the Westfield Normal School. The lecture presentation at 6:30 on Dever Stage\, Parenzo Hall\, features three speakers who will discuss the history of the Westfield Normal School. Before or after the lecture\, visitors are invited to an exhibit of historical photos in the Arno Maris Gallery\, Ely Hall 2nd floor. A dessert reception and raffle will be hosted in the gallery following the lecture. \n  \nThe lecture will include three panelists. Professor Beth Ann Rothermel will present “’Dig Where You Stand’: Lessons from the WSU Archive.” From her research work in the WSU archives\, Prof. Rothermel will share a few of her more interesting observations about the Westfield Normal School’s history. Walter Fogg will present “Westfield’s Little Known School of Observation\,” a brief history of the Wyben schoolhouse from 1931 to 1939\, when it served as a school of observation for Westfield State Teachers College. Students studying in “Rural Education” were transported to the Wyben Schoolhouse to observe and to practice teach. During this period of time\, the schoolhouse was turned over to the College\, which assumed all administrative responsibilities for the school’s daily operations. Professor Mara Dodge will present “Westfield State University: Evolution & Transformation\, 1839-2010.” From its opening days in Barre\, MA as the nation’s first public\, co-educational “normal” school\, Prof. Dodge will trace the institution’s growth while addressing some popular myths and misperceptions about its storied history. \n  \nThe photography exhibit in the Arno Maris Gallery\, Ely Hall 2nd floor\, will feature historic photos of the Normal School and downtown buildings. Also featured will be photos by the Allen sisters\, who graduated from Westfield Normal School in 1876 pursuing a teaching career which they eventually gave up due to loss of hearing. In 1884 they began a very successful career in photography. They were pioneers in respect to being women in the arts. Their nostalgic mood was coveted in an age of increasing industrialization. Their technique of developing platinum prints enhanced this direction of nostalgia. The “Westfield State University Revisited: Archival Photographs and Artifacts” collection focuses on the inception and growth of Westfield State University. Highlighted are various presidents starting with Horace Mann and continuing with those of high expectations and amazing drive bringing the Normal School forward to become Westfield State College and now Westfield State University. Continuing where “Westfield State University Revisited” leaves off is a photographic essay featuring many of the original buildings still existing in Westfield showcasing a visual evolution of the town and many links it has to the university. Catalogs of the historic photo collections will be available for purchase. The exhibit will be up during the week of March 4-9 (Tuesday\, Wednesday\, Thursday\, Friday 10:00 – 2:00). On Wednesday evening\, March 6\, directly following the lecture\, guests are invited to walk over to Ely Hall to visit the gallery\, enjoy dessert\, and participate in a raffle. To accommodate Wednesday’s events the gallery will also be open from 5:00-9:00 pm.

The question to be discussed in March will be: What do you value? Future questions for discussion will be picked by the group. \n  \nSocrates Café is an opportunity for ordinary people to wrestle with the Big Questions\, in a facilitated\, volunteer-led discussion. Alternative viewpoints are encouraged and explored. All discussion takes place in an atmosphere of respect and encouragement. People from all walks of life\, are encouraged to attend and contribute their unique views. \n  \nMom’s WWII Letters – Reconstructing History & Genealogy Program: In May 2017\, Corinne Smith found her mother’s stash of more than 100 letters from 16 servicemen she had corresponded with in 1944-1945. Corinne began to trace the soldiers’ family trees with one goal in mind: to return the letters in person to their children. Learn about this on-going project and hear some of the stories of the men & their relatives. Join us at the Southwick Public Library on Wednesday\, March 20 at 7 p.m. to hear Corrine’s story. \n  \nThis presentation links history and genealogy to present-day research and diligence. It revisits a time that we may not want to forget. SUMMARY:Drive-Thru Blessings on Ash Wednesday
DESCRIPTION:The Agawam United Methodist Church at 459 Mill Street in Feeding Hills and Christ Church United Methodist at 222 College Highway in Southwick are offering a drive-thru Ash Wednesday blessing for all those who are either too busy to attend a full worship service somewhere or who have limited mobility or health issues. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Christian season of Lent\, which concludes after 40 days with the celebration of Easter Sunday. \n  \nPastor Ken Blanchard will offer ashes for people of any and all Christian denominations on Wednesday March 6 at two times and locations: Agawam UMC (Feeding Hills) 7:00am-9:00am at the circular driveway in front of the church; and Christ Church United Methodist (Southwick) 11:30am-1:30pm at the driveway between the church and the Food Pantry. \n  \nIn addition to anointing foreheads with ashes\, the blessing will include a scripture reading and a brief prayer. This is the first time such an approach is being offered in Southwick\, and it will be offered instead of a traditional Ash Wednesday worship service inside the building. It’s a poem where the number of syllables in each line corresponds to the digits of pi. That is\, the first line has 3 syllables\, the second has 1\, the third has 4 and so on. Created and directed by Mark Gionfriddo\, who is also onstage as “Matt Morgan”\, The Big Broadcast! is a re-creation of a live 1940’s radio show featuring the Mount Holyoke College Big Band\, Vocal Jazz\, and Chamber Jazz Ensembles performing well-known tunes from the swing era and the American songbook. WWLP-TV meteorologist Brian Lapis is emcee “Fred Kelley” for his 12th consecutive season. This season marks the 20th anniversary of the Jazz Ensembles of Mount holyoke College and Mount Holyoke alum\, fiddler Zoë Darrow will join The Big Broadcast! as special guest. \n  \nMount Holyoke College music faculty member Mark Gionfriddo originally created The Big Broadcast! for a small cabaret group he directed\, and incorporated it into the concert season at Mount Holyoke College. It has since been designated as a Signature Event at the college. \n  \nMark Gionfriddo (“Matt Morgan”) is well known to area concertgoers as a pianist\, accompanist\, composer\, arranger\, and musical director. His versatility and knowledge of many musical styles has brought him together with a wide range of popular and classical artists through the years\, among them Mitzi Gaynor\, Liberace\, Al Martino\, Anna Moffo\, the Young@Heart Chorus\, and Garrison Keillor. Mark’s adventures while assistant conductor on board Cunard’s MS Royal Viking Sun brought him around the world to 30 countries. Mark received his Bachelor’s Degree in Piano from Skidmore College and Master’s Degree in Accompanying from UMASS/Amherst. \n  \nMark has been based at Mount Holyoke College since 1986 where he is a Senior Instructor in Classical and Jazz Piano as well as Director and Founder of the Jazz Ensembles. In 2006\, he conducted the MHC Big Band during two episodes of the popular public radio quiz show Says You!. Mark is also a music director for Berkshire Theatre Group in Stockbridge and Pittsfield MA during the summer\, and has recently served in that capacity for productions of The Music Man\, Peter Pan\, A Class Act\, Seussical the Musical\, Mary Poppins\, Beauty and The Beast\, A Christmas Carol\, Tarzan\, and the Neil Ellenoff Musical Mondays series. \n  \nGionfriddo is co-author: Good Night\, Dear Hart\, Good Night\, the story of Hart-Lester H. Allen\, whose husband brought down the infamous Charles Ponzi of “Ponzi scheme” fame. The book\, on the Epigraph imprint\, is co-authored by his mother\, Jeannie Gionfriddo. \n  \nBrian Lapis (“Fred Kelley”) joined the 22News Storm Team in 1996. He got his start in broadcasting at the age of 15 at radio station WILI\, in his hometown of Willimantic\, CT. He’s worked as a radio on-air talent for stations in Hartford\, CT; Philadelphia\, PA; Syracuse\, NY; and Providence\, RI. Brian has a Bachelor’s degree in Television Radio Film Management from Syracuse University. In addition\, he holds a certificate in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University. This is his 12th season as WJAZ announcer and emcee “Fred Kelley”. In 2013\, the National Weather Association named Brian “Broadcaster of the Year”. \n  \nBrian loves performing as “Fred Kelley”. “The combination of the opportunity for me to perform\, the creative energy of the students and Mark Gionfriddo\, and the great music makes this far and away my favorite event of the year\,” he said. “As a ‘student of broadcasting’\, I am one who appreciates the Golden Age of Radio and just how hugely popular these variety shows were in their day. I’d like to believe that if I were around back in the 1940s\, I would have a gig like Fred Kelley’s.” \n  \nZoë Darrow is an accomplished fiddler and musician of rare intensity and expressive range who grew up playing Cape Breton and other Celtic music on a sheep farm in Blandford\, Massachusetts. SUMMARY:When Two Worlds Meet: Native Americans of Western MA
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Gail White Usher\, Wednesday\, February 27\, 2019 6:30 p.m. Westfield State University\, Scanlon Banquet Hall. Free and open to the public. \n  \nWhat life was like for the original inhabitants of Westfield\, the Woronoak tribe\, and their Eastern Woodlands’ tribes neighbors such as the Pocumtuck 350 years ago? And how did it change with the arrival of European populations? In the period 1620 to 1750\, European settlement of North America expanded rapidly and encounters with the Native populations increased in frequency and intensity. Both societies incorporated aspects of the others’ material world. The changes were most dramatic in the Eastern Woodlands’ tribes. They retained their cultures but their material world was significantly altered. This lecture explores Eastern Woodlands Native Americans during this time of interaction. It will look first at their lives just prior to contact and then examine decades of change that follow. \n  \nPresenter Gail White Usher serves as Education Coordinator at Roseland Cottage and Arnold House\, run by Historic New England\, the oldest and largest regional heritage organization in the nation.

SUMMARY:Childhood Obesity is a Family Affair
DESCRIPTION:The YMCA of Greater Westfield wants families to understand how adopting healthy habits together can help reduce childhood obesity. While the dangers of childhood obesity are well chronicled\, many families need support changing their families’ habits with the goal of overweight and obese children obtaining and maintaining a healthy weight. That’s why the YMCA of Greater Westfield a leading community-based organization dedicated to improving health—wants families to understand the dangers of childhood obesity and ways to reverse course through improved eating habits and increased physical activity. \n  \nAccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\, the prevalence of obesity has remained stable at about 17 percent and affects about 12.7 million children and adolescents. Today\, obesity affects one in six children and one in three are overweight\, which poses greater risks for many health problems such as type 2 diabetes\, high blood pressure\, high cholesterol and some cancers. \n  \nFor years parents have heard the dangers of childhood obesity but making the necessary lifestyle changes—as a family—remain the biggest barrier to real progress. Therefore\, in collaboration with Baystate Health & support from Kohl’s Cares grant\, the YMCA of Greater Westfield is offering the MIGHTY program. MIGHTY is Baystate Health’s pediatric weight management program that stands for Moving\, Improving and Gaining Health Together at the YMCA. MIGHTY is an evidence-based multi-component pediatric weight-management program aimed at children with a body mass index above the 90th percentile. This Free program is a two-hour sessions\, twice a month\, over a six-month period during which children and their families engage with exercise specialists\, nutritionist and social workers in classroom instruction and group exercise sessions. Next session is for children between the ages of 8-10 beginning in April on Tuesdays\, 4-6PM. To be eligible for the MIGHTY Program\, participants must be in the 90th percentile for height & weight\, complete a Y’s medical clearance forms /Inquiry forms & History Intake forms. This event\, which will benefit the Cancer Connection\, will feature singer bassist Mary Witt\, the leader of the very popular Swing/Motown/Blues/Soul band\, The O-Tones. The performance will begin at 3:00\, with a swing dance lesson offered by Christine LeBel and Mark Page at 2:30. Light refreshments available for purchase. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 23 at 10 am at EMCC “Slim’s” Lounge. There have been some changes to the rules of golf that went into effect on January 1\, 2019 that we should be aware of. Some of the rules affect our daily playing of the game of golf. The majority of these changes are either simplify everyday rulings and/or hopefully improve the pace of play. I think many of these changes are long overdue. I have always felt the rules of golf were too difficult for most players to understand. \n  \nEveryone is welcome to attend. I would encourage league presidents to attend. There are over 30 rule changes to cover. No charge to attend. This is an informal gathering to discuss the new rules of golf implemented on January 1\, 2019. I will try to make this a fun and interesting learning experience.
