We are always looking for new members\, but will gladly welcome back returning or previous members. Under the guidance of Jim O’Connor the band practices for 6 Mondays and will perform a concert on April 10th at 7:30pm. Members must be 18 years of age and able to read music. Otherwise\, all levels of ability are accepted. Anyone from the area is gladly welcomed. Dust off an old instrument or bring the one that gets lots of use\, and come join us on March 4th.

DESCRIPTION:Need some extra help with Microsoft Word? Interested in learning how to research your ancestors? Or maybe you’d like a refresher in using the library’s online catalog? These are the types of topics that can be covered during our new “Book-A-Librarian” sessions. Beginning Mondays in March\, patrons are invited to “Book-A-Librarian” for a one-on-one library instruction session. This new service will connect Agawam residents with a professional librarian for customized\, library-related skill-building. Participants will reserve 30 minutes of individualized instruction on Monday evenings beginning in March. Depending on the demand\, additional days and times may be added. Some more examples of assistance we can provide include: \n  \nSetting up a new email account; uploading a resume to job sites; using our downloadable and streaming content; getting started with the internet or social media; basic computing skills (mouse\, keyboarding\, etc.); basic Microsoft skills (Word\, Excel\, PowerPoint\, etc.) ; using the library’s e-resources/databases; and researching your genealogy. \n  \nBook-A-Librarian sessions will begin Monday\, March 4th between the hours of 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. Patrons can begin booking 30-minute appointments on February 28th. DESCRIPTION:As part of Westfield’s 350th anniversary celebration\, the Friends of the Westfield Senior Center group is hosting ‘Westfield Trivia!’ on Sunday\, March 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. This unique trivia game fundraising event will feature five rounds of questions asked by local ‘celebrity’ hosts. Between each round\, entertainment will be provided by the members of New England Dance and Gymnastics performance team. This group is comprised of youth aged 7 to 13 who are interested in participating in community activities. Half of the trivia questions will be related to Westfield history. Each team will consist of seven members. You may form your own team or a partial team when you purchase your event ticket. Each member of the first-place winning team will receive a $25 gift certificate to the Short Stop Bar & Grill. To add to the fun\, we’ll have a 50/50 drawing and a Lucky Lottery Leprechaun boasting $100 worth of lottery tickets. Each attendee will take home a scrumptious ice cream sundae to be distributed as participants leave the event. ‘Westfield Trivia!’ is a fundraiser for the Friends of the Westfield Senior Center. DESCRIPTION:The Jazz Ensembles of Mount Holyoke College present the 14th edition of The Big Broadcast! on Saturday\, March 2 at 2PM & 7:30PM at Chapin Auditorium\, Mount Holyoke College\, in South Hadley\, MA. Snow date is Sunday\, March 3.. Created and directed by Mark Gionfriddo\, who is also onstage as “Matt Morgan”\, The Big Broadcast! is a re-creation of a live 1940’s radio show featuring the Mount Holyoke College Big Band\, Vocal Jazz\, and Chamber Jazz Ensembles performing well-known tunes from the swing era and the American songbook. WWLP-TV meteorologist Brian Lapis is emcee “Fred Kelley” for his 12th consecutive season. This season marks the 20th anniversary of the Jazz Ensembles of Mount holyoke College and Mount Holyoke alum\, fiddler Zoë Darrow will join The Big Broadcast! as special guest. \n  \nMount Holyoke College music faculty member Mark Gionfriddo originally created The Big Broadcast! for a small cabaret group he directed\, and incorporated it into the concert season at Mount Holyoke College. It has since been designated as a Signature Event at the college. \n  \nMark Gionfriddo (“Matt Morgan”) is well known to area concertgoers as a pianist\, accompanist\, composer\, arranger\, and musical director. His versatility and knowledge of many musical styles has brought him together with a wide range of popular and classical artists through the years\, among them Mitzi Gaynor\, Liberace\, Al Martino\, Anna Moffo\, the Young@Heart Chorus\, and Garrison Keillor. Mark’s adventures while assistant conductor on board Cunard’s MS Royal Viking Sun brought him around the world to 30 countries. Mark received his Bachelor’s Degree in Piano from Skidmore College and Master’s Degree in Accompanying from UMASS/Amherst. \n  \nMark has been based at Mount Holyoke College since 1986 where he is a Senior Instructor in Classical and Jazz Piano as well as Director and Founder of the Jazz Ensembles. In 2006\, he conducted the MHC Big Band during two episodes of the popular public radio quiz show Says You!. Mark is also a music director for Berkshire Theatre Group in Stockbridge and Pittsfield MA during the summer\, and has recently served in that capacity for productions of The Music Man\, Peter Pan\, A Class Act\, Seussical the Musical\, Mary Poppins\, Beauty and The Beast\, A Christmas Carol\, Tarzan\, and the Neil Ellenoff Musical Mondays series. \n  \nGionfriddo is co-author: Good Night\, Dear Hart\, Good Night\, the story of Hart-Lester H. Allen\, whose husband brought down the infamous Charles Ponzi of “Ponzi scheme” fame. The book\, on the Epigraph imprint\, is co-authored by his mother\, Jeannie Gionfriddo. \n  \nBrian Lapis (“Fred Kelley”) joined the 22News Storm Team in 1996. He got his start in broadcasting at the age of 15 at radio station WILI\, in his hometown of Willimantic\, CT. He’s worked as a radio on-air talent for stations in Hartford\, CT; Philadelphia\, PA; Syracuse\, NY; and Providence\, RI. Brian has a Bachelor’s degree in Television Radio Film Management from Syracuse University. In addition\, he holds a certificate in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University. This is his 12th season as WJAZ announcer and emcee “Fred Kelley”. In 2013\, the National Weather Association named Brian “Broadcaster of the Year”. \n  \nBrian loves performing as “Fred Kelley”. “The combination of the opportunity for me to perform\, the creative energy of the students and Mark Gionfriddo\, and the great music makes this far and away my favorite event of the year\,” he said. “As a ‘student of broadcasting’\, I am one who appreciates the Golden Age of Radio and just how hugely popular these variety shows were in their day. I’d like to believe that if I were around back in the 1940s\, I would have a gig like Fred Kelley’s.” \n  \nZoë Darrow is an accomplished fiddler and musician of rare intensity and expressive range who grew up playing Cape Breton and other Celtic music on a sheep farm in Blandford\, Massachusetts. She released her first recording in 2001 at the age of 12\, with her band the Fiddleheads. The Valley Advocate named them “Best Celtic Band” in 2007 and Celtic Heritage Magazine acclaimed Zoë as an artist “destined to add savory spice to the global mix.” A graduate of Mount Holyoke College with a degree in anthropology and music\, she has also become a much sought after collaborator\, touring and recording with luminaries like banjo innovator Tony Trischka\, Bela Fleck’s primary banjo guru and an instructor at the Berklee College of Music. DESCRIPTION:St. Mary’s Boy Scout Troop 109 will be holding their annual Bottle and Can Drive on March 2nd\, 9 am to 2 pm. next to the Super Phipp’s sign (E. Main St\, Westfield) in the plaza. If you’d like to help the scouts\, please save your returnable bottles and cans (including CT water bottles)\, and donate them during the Bottle and Can Drive. Last year\, the scouts collected over 60\,000 bottles and cans. This year\, they’re shooting for 75\,000. Proceeds will help buy Troop camping gear and pay for other expenses related to their activities\, events\, and service projects. SUMMARY:When Two Worlds Meet: Native Americans of Western MA
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Gail White Usher\, Wednesday\, February 27\, 2019 6:30 p.m. Westfield State University\, Scanlon Banquet Hall. Free and open to the public. \n  \nWhat life was like for the original inhabitants of Westfield\, the Woronoak tribe\, and their Eastern Woodlands’ tribes neighbors such as the Pocumtuck 350 years ago? And how did it change with the arrival of European populations? In the period 1620 to 1750\, European settlement of North America expanded rapidly and encounters with the Native populations increased in frequency and intensity. Both societies incorporated aspects of the others’ material world. The changes were most dramatic in the Eastern Woodlands’ tribes. They retained their cultures but their material world was significantly altered. This lecture explores Eastern Woodlands Native Americans during this time of interaction. It will look first at their lives just prior to contact and then examine decades of change that follow. \n  \nPresenter Gail White Usher serves as Education Coordinator at Roseland Cottage and Arnold House\, run by Historic New England\, the oldest and largest regional heritage organization in the nation.

SUMMARY:Childhood Obesity is a Family Affair
DESCRIPTION:The YMCA of Greater Westfield wants families to understand how adopting healthy habits together can help reduce childhood obesity. While the dangers of childhood obesity are well chronicled\, many families need support changing their families’ habits with the goal of overweight and obese children obtaining and maintaining a healthy weight. That’s why the YMCA of Greater Westfield a leading community-based organization dedicated to improving health—wants families to understand the dangers of childhood obesity and ways to reverse course through improved eating habits and increased physical activity. \n  \nAccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\, the prevalence of obesity has remained stable at about 17 percent and affects about 12.7 million children and adolescents. Today\, obesity affects one in six children and one in three are overweight\, which poses greater risks for many health problems such as type 2 diabetes\, high blood pressure\, high cholesterol and some cancers. \n  \nFor years parents have heard the dangers of childhood obesity but making the necessary lifestyle changes—as a family—remain the biggest barrier to real progress. Therefore\, in collaboration with Baystate Health & support from Kohl’s Cares grant\, the YMCA of Greater Westfield is offering the MIGHTY program. MIGHTY is Baystate Health’s pediatric weight management program that stands for Moving\, Improving and Gaining Health Together at the YMCA. MIGHTY is an evidence-based multi-component pediatric weight-management program aimed at children with a body mass index above the 90th percentile. This Free program is a two-hour sessions\, twice a month\, over a six-month period during which children and their families engage with exercise specialists\, nutritionist and social workers in classroom instruction and group exercise sessions. Next session is for children between the ages of 8-10 beginning in April on Tuesdays\, 4-6PM. To be eligible for the MIGHTY Program\, participants must be in the 90th percentile for height & weight\, complete a Y’s medical clearance forms /Inquiry forms & History Intake forms. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 23 at 10 am at EMCC “Slim’s” Lounge. There have been some changes to the rules of golf that went into effect on January 1\, 2019 that we should be aware of. Some of the rules affect our daily playing of the game of golf. The majority of these changes are either simplify everyday rulings and/or hopefully improve the pace of play. I think many of these changes are long overdue. I have always felt the rules of golf were too difficult for most players to understand. \n  \nEveryone is welcome to attend. I would encourage league presidents to attend. There are over 30 rule changes to cover. No charge to attend. This is an informal gathering to discuss the new rules of golf implemented on January 1\, 2019. I will try to make this a fun and interesting learning experience. SUMMARY:Western Mass Hilltown Hikers group hike Griffin Brook Trail in Chester
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 23rd 10:00 am. Chester-Blandford State Forest is a publicly owned forest with recreational features located in the two towns for which it is named\, Chester and Blandford\, Massachusetts. There are many lesser traveled outstanding trails there and this is one of three that we will explore this winter. Join us for a two hour hike starting at Griffin Brook Road which runs along Griffin Brook and parallel to Sanderson Brook Road\, the wide trail slopes downhill to the valley at the top of Sanderson Falls\, we will then bear right onto State Road and end at Sanderson Brook in the middle of the State Forest. We will pass by a large marsh where moose and beaver dams can be seen\, then up close to the massive moss covered rock walls that line this trail on one side while looking down at Griffin Brook far below. \n  \nMeet at the Trailhead on Round Hill Road in the State Forest parking lot. Take Route 20 to Blandford Rd in Chester turn left onto Round Hill Rd bear left at the old cemetery (you may park there also and along Park Knox Road) and see State Park entrance on your right. Plan for two hours to get to the end of the trail and back. \n  \nAlthough the trail is easily traveled and well-marked\, be prepared for mud\, snow\, and ice. Bring drinks and snacks. Maps and bottled water will be provided. Please be aware that there are no facilities at the trail. Dogs are welcome! DESCRIPTION:Westfield Athenaeum Archivist Kate Deviny has mounted an exhibit titled Made in Westfield to display Westfield’s history of industry and manufacturing. It is open in the Jasper Rand Art museum during regular business hours. \n  \nWhile not complete\, the display reminds us of the wide variety of manufacturing that has been in Westfield since early times – the cotton thread mill of Richard Falley\, brick making\, ice cutting and powder mills as well as the bicycle\, whip\, paper\, and cigar making that this town is famous for. Several current businesses have also loaned us materials so that you can learn about boroscopes\, mirco-abrasive powders\, grinding wheels\, and artificial joints. \n  \nThis exhibit will last until April 7th.

DESCRIPTION:ArtWalk Westfield\, a free art and cultural experience that takes each month in downtown Westfield\, will feature a unique mix of local and regional artists on Saturday February 16th from 11am to 1pm in pop-up art galleries located in the Gaslight Gallery District along Elm Street between Church and School Streets. \n  \nArtWalk Westfield will take place on the third Saturday during the cold weather months of February and March. The event returns to the third Friday of each month from 5-7pm beginning in May. February ArtWalk Westfield will feature several artists who are either new to Westfield or are making their gallery debut. All artists will be on hand at each pop up gallery location to answer questions and chat about their work. Most pieces of art work will be available for purchase. \n  \nWith the exception of February and March\, ArtWalk Westfield is held on the third Friday of each month from 5-7pm\, featuring a new mix of artist and artistic mediums each month. Launched in June 2018\, ArtWalk Westfield is a collaborative effort between ArtWorks Westfield\, host pop up gallery business owners and local artists and musicians. DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, Feb. 15\, the Gateway choirs will be hosting a family movie night and bake sale at 6 p.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center (GPAC). Admission will not be charged\, but donations will be gratefully accepted at the door. Funds raised will help defray the cost of their competition and field trip to New York City. \n  \nThe film will be Disney/Pixar’s Finding Nemo (rated G). Marlin\, a clown fish from the Great Barrier Reef and overprotective father\, loses his son to a mysterious diver and must travel across the ocean in order to find him. Join us for a story about a physical and emotional journey\, and about a father who will do anything for his family. \n  \nThis event is an excellent opportunity to witness the newly renovated\, state-of-the-art projection system paid for by the Shipman Memorial fund of the Gateway Education Foundation; this is also the first film to be shown with the GPAC’s new sound system.

DESCRIPTION:Holyoke Mall is proud to partner with Western Mass News to hold a food drive to benefit The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts from February 15th – February 24th on the Upper Level near Target. Donation boxes will be available Monday – Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for guests to drop off non-perishable donations. Most needed items are as follows: peanut butter and jelly\, rice and canned soup\, spaghetti and canned sauce\, canned pastas and mac ‘n’ cheese\, tuna and canned beans\, and low sugar cereal and fruit. The food drive is a part of Holyoke Mall’s long-standing tradition of giving back to the community.
