DESCRIPTION:Holyoke Mall is proud to partner with Western Mass News to hold a food drive to benefit The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts from February 15th – February 24th on the Upper Level near Target. Donation boxes will be available Monday – Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for guests to drop off non-perishable donations. Most needed items are as follows: peanut butter and jelly\, rice and canned soup\, spaghetti and canned sauce\, canned pastas and mac ‘n’ cheese\, tuna and canned beans\, and low sugar cereal and fruit. The food drive is a part of Holyoke Mall’s long-standing tradition of giving back to the community. Additionally\, Western Mass News will be collecting donations from February 15th to February 24\, 2019 at their station located at 1300 Liberty Street in Springfield.

SUMMARY:Watershed Wanderings Through Time and Space: Westfield River Watershed Association\, 65 years of service
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Bill Rose\, Mark Damon\, Dr. Aaron Reyes\, Dr. Brian Conz\, Wednesday\, February 13\, 2019 6:30 p.m. Dever Stage\, Parenzo Hall\, Westfield State University. Free and open to the public. \n  \nA panel of Westfield River Watershed Association (WRWA) members will offer perspectives on the watershed and the association committed to its stewardship. Bill Rose will speak about his experience as an avid local recreational fly fisherman\, addressing the type of fishing that takes place in the Westfield river\, the changing conditions of the river and how this affects fishing\, and WRWA activities that support recreational fishing such as salmon stocking\, fly fishing clinics\, and the yearly fish ladder open house. \n  \nMark Damon will discuss WRWA activities including river cleanups and the sampling of invertebrates in the river; how the diversity of invertebrates can be used as an indicator of overall ecosystem health; and a principle in riverine ecology called the River Continuum Concept that considers the health of the watershed. Dr. Aaron O. Reyes will describe the geology through which the Westfield River flows and how the geology affects natural water chemistry\, followed by a short description of results from a WSU student internship program. Dr. Brian Conz will discuss the development and evolution of the Westfield River terraces\, which are found in the Westfield River valley west of the city center. The terraces were cut from deltaic sediments deposited into an arm of glacial Lake Hitchcock some 13\,000 years ago. The terraces were documented in the early 1900s by the famous physical geographer William Morris Davis and reveal a great deal about the evolution of our local landscape.

DESCRIPTION:The Westfield Republican Committee will honor local citizens and veteran for their service to others\, the community and the nation\, at the Annual Lincoln Day Brunch at the East Mountain Country Club at 10 AM on Saturday\, February 9th. Master of Ceremony Senator Don Humason will be joined by special guests and elected officials. The honorees are: Outstanding Community Service\, Harry Rock; Veteran Of The Year\, Don Wielgus; Youth Award\, Joe Tierney; and Volunteer Award\, Doug Lyman of Chicopee. \n  \n“I am highly honored and very flattered to be recognized for outstanding community service. We all do what we do because we love our community\, our city and our country. It is not about personal recognition. It takes a village to accomplish anything significant\, and I am very grateful for the many volunteers who have stepped up to help with the Westfield 350 celebrations!” said Harry Rock. \n  \nDon Wielgus\, a Marine who served as Squad leader of a Flame Thrower Unit\, served in Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 and as an Orderly to US Navy Admiral James Russell at NATO headquarters in Naples\, Italy. Don is a member of American Legion Post 124\, Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 1847\, Vietnam Veteran’s Chapter 219\, and Marine Corps League\, Detachment 141\, which he served as Commandant for 2 years. Don served as Project Manager for numerous projects\, including the Eternal Light Installation and Drinking Fountain at Parker Park\, the Purple Heart Trail\, and placement of American flags on Memorial Day at Pine Hill Cemetery. He is a Lifetime member of the Westfield Sportsmen Club and Friends of the Senior Center. He is a very active member of St. Peter & St. Casimir Parish. 6 days a week\, Don picks up and delivers food for the Westfield Food Pantry and Samaritan Inn. Don is best known by many for his constant presence at many community events as photographer for the Westfield Evening News. In his spare time\, he is the owner of Wielgus Painting & Decorating and volunteer at the Westfield Homeless Cat Project Animal Shelter; organizing and visiting nursing homes\, hospitals\, shut-ins at Easter and Soldiers Home. Has been known to fill in for Santa Claus on his day off. \n  \nDoug Lyman will receive the Volunteer Award for his enthusiasm and determination in grassroots organizing. Doug was an Eagle Scout\, honorably discharged as Cadet from the Army ROTC program\, and worked in Graphic Design and Marketing. Doug decided it was time to do something and get involved. Doug organized his ward and city committee in Chicopee\, and became a delegate to the 2018 State convention. Doug worked to organize and promote volunteer activities in 3 counties\, collecting nomination signatures\, standouts and events. Doug used his skills as a photographer to obtain press passes at events\, and capture volunteers working on the campaigns of Geoff Diehl\, Jay McMahon and Marie Angelides. \n  \nJoe Tierney is a Westfield State University student who grew up in Westfield in a close-knit family. DESCRIPTION:Clear the garage: third and fourth graders (with fifth grade actors) from Littleville Elementary School will present their musical\, “Making the Band” on Thursday\, January 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center. A student art show will precede the concert in the foyer and opens at 6 p.m. In this play\, students learn about the instruments and other aspects of a rock band and come together to perform classic rock songs from different decades. Whether an older adult is dealing with health problems\, the loss of close family members and friends\, or caregiver responsibilities\, the support of others\, often “in the same boat\,” can be most helpful. Mary Ellen Asher\, RN\, is at the Senior Center Tuesday and Friday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon and can assist older adults with blood pressure checks\, medication review\, blood glucose testing\, and one-to-one health education. There is no charge for this service and no advance appointments are necessary. \n  \nWestfield Senior Center’s “Heaven’s Angels” Project \nMichelle Moniz coordinates a group at the Westfield Senior Center who sew “angel” gowns for newborns who never make it home from the hospital. The white angel gowns are made from wedding gowns and offer comfort to strangers coping with the death of a child from miscarriage\, stillbirth\, or through neonatal loss. The baby gown is used to present the infants to their families as they say a final farewell before burial or cremation. The “Heaven’s Angels” group meets on the first Monday of the month from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Westfield Senior Center\, 45 Noble Street. Participants should feel free to bring a portable sewing machine\, sewing scissors\, and pins. Those who don’t sew can participate by dismantling wedding gowns as well as tracing and cutting patterns. Experienced Realtor and Friends of the Westfield Senior Center Board member Lesley Lambert is at the Senior Center on the second Wednesday of every month from 12:30 to 1 p.m. on the ‘Deck’ of the Great Room to get you started in the process or answer any real estate questions that you might have. No advance sign-ups are necessary. \n  \nChess at the Westfield Senior Center \nEach Monday afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m.\, a small dedicated group of Chess players gathers for one of the quietest activities at the Westfield Senior Center. Les Hutton offers Chess instruction and guidance to anyone who is interested in learning the game. No prior experience is necessary and Chess sets are provided. Lessons are tailored to the participant’s abilities and goals. Experienced players can always enjoy a friendly game and helpful advice. The benefits of the game are numerous. Planning is key! The Medical Reserve Corps of Hampden County has prepared a family records packet to assist in the planning process. The document is extensive but simple to complete. “Be Aware\, Be Prepared!” packets are available at the Westfield Senior Center\, 45 Noble Street. Once completed\, the document should be kept in a clear watertight plastic bag\, ready to be taken with you in the event of a disaster if you need to evacuate your home. It is the hope of the Medical Reserve Corps that you will never have to use the “Be Aware\, Be Prepared!” document. But hope is not a plan! \n  \n“Viewpoints” Low Vision Support Group \nThe Westfield Senior Center’s “Viewpoints” low vision support group meets on the third Tuesday of the month from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. and is open to individuals with low vision and those who support them. Zumba Gold builds cardiovascular health by challenging the heart and working the muscles of the hips\, legs\, and arms with dance moves. Ditch the workout and come join the party! \n  \nAssistance for Retired Teachers \nThe Edith Stewart Chase Foundation grants emergency financial assistance to retired educators who confront an economic crisis. Those who receive benefits from the Massachusetts Teachers Retirement Board and who are members of the Retired Educators Association of Massachusetts (REAM) are eligible to apply to The Foundation for assistance. Consider joining Westfield Senior Center’s weekly “Art Unlimited” class. The name is a reflection of the broad scope of creative artistic techniques that the older adult students learn. In addition to paint\, they experiment with charcoal\, pastels\, and other mediums. Instructor Elaine Lees encourages each student to explore the unlimited possibilities that art provides. The class is offered on Thursday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $4 per class on a pay-as-you-go basis. The class is partially funded by a grant from Sarah Gillett Services for the Elderly\, Inc. Because no previous art experience is necessary\, this is a wonderful opportunity to try something new!
