DESCRIPTION:The public is cordially invited to join us at the Westfield Athenaeum on Saturday\, January 26 from 9:00 -11:00 am for an open house to tour the newly renovated areas of the recently completed building project. Building committee members and Athenaeum Trustees will be available to answer any questions that you may have about the updates. \nFor more than two years\, the Athenaeum had closed several portions of its building in order to renovate\, upgrade and make more accessible those areas open to the public. The Adult Reference Room\, opened last October\, offers new seating\, enhanced lighting and 18 new public computer stations. WIFI service is improved with the installation of Whip City Fiber throughout. The Boys & Girls Library reopened its doors last month\, offering new seating\, bookcases\, shelving and family areas to for parents and children as well as 6 public computer stations and a private study room. Coffee and refreshments will be served.

DESCRIPTION:Clear the garage: third and fourth graders (with fifth grade actors) from Littleville Elementary School will present their musical\, “Making the Band” on Thursday\, January 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center. A student art show will precede the concert in the foyer and opens at 6 p.m. In this play\, students learn about the instruments and other aspects of a rock band and come together to perform classic rock songs from different decades. Songs are arranged by Roger Emerson and choreographed by John Jacobson. Admission is free. Feel free to join us as our older elementary students show that they’ve “got the beat”\, can “twist and shout”\, and are “making the band”. Music teacher Renee Mosher and art teacher Amy Thornton will lead the evening’s visual and performing arts event. The musical was paid for by the Gateway Education Foundation\, through its Funds for Learning program.

DESCRIPTION:Volunteer Companions Sought \nIf you want to impact an older adult’s life in a positive way\, consider volunteering with the Westfield Council On Aging Companion Program. Companions assist homebound elders in Westfield with grocery shopping\, errands\, transportation to medical appointments\, and/or friendly visiting. The goal of the Westfield Council On Aging Volunteer Companion Program is to help older adults maintain their independence and sense of well-being. It takes only two hours per week and volunteers are reimbursed for their gas mileage. There is no charge to seniors for the service which is funded by the Westfield Community Development Block Grant\, Sarah Gillett Services for the Elderly\, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs\, and private donations. For more information\, contact Joyce Peregrin at the Senior Center at 562-6435. \n  \n“Male Call!” Fitness Class at Westfield Senior Center \nGreg Hannum\, a Westfield State University Movement Science graduate\, facilitates “Male Call!” an all-male fitness class at the Westfield Senior Center on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m. The cost is $5 per class on a pay-as-you-go basis. This is a general fitness class designed specifically for older men with a variety of fitness abilities. Please remember that participants utilizing the Fitness Room for classes and dance sessions are required to change their footwear before walking on the hardwood floor and also sign a Release of Liability and Usage Agreement. Whether an older adult is dealing with health problems\, the loss of close family members and friends\, or caregiver responsibilities\, the support of others\, often “in the same boat\,” can be most helpful. Participants chat informally over coffee or tea and all discussions are strictly confidential. Please consider joining the group as a “regular” or a “drop-in.” For more information\, call Tina Gorman at the Senior Center\, 562-6435. The Westfield Senior Center is located at 45 Noble Street. \n  \nNursing Services at the Westfield Senior Center \nNursing services are available at the Westfield Senior Center\, 45 Noble Street\, thanks to the generosity of Baystate Noble Hospital. Mary Ellen Asher\, RN\, is at the Senior Center Tuesday and Friday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon and can assist older adults with blood pressure checks\, medication review\, blood glucose testing\, and one-to-one health education. There is no charge for this service and no advance appointments are necessary. \n  \nWestfield Senior Center’s “Heaven’s Angels” Project \nMichelle Moniz coordinates a group at the Westfield Senior Center who sew “angel” gowns for newborns who never make it home from the hospital. The white angel gowns are made from wedding gowns and offer comfort to strangers coping with the death of a child from miscarriage\, stillbirth\, or through neonatal loss. The baby gown is used to present the infants to their families as they say a final farewell before burial or cremation. The “Heaven’s Angels” group meets on the first Monday of the month from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Westfield Senior Center\, 45 Noble Street. Participants should feel free to bring a portable sewing machine\, sewing scissors\, and pins. Those who don’t sew can participate by dismantling wedding gowns as well as tracing and cutting patterns. On the fourth Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m.\, the Westfield Senior Center Great Room is the hot spot to trip the light fantastic! Couples and singles have the opportunity to dance the afternoon away. Local favorite musician\, Richie Mitnick provides the live music each month. The cost is $3 per person on a pay-as-you-go basis. The Westfield Senior Center is located at 45 Noble Street. \n  \nWestfield Senior Center Offers “Real Estate Reality” \nAre you an older adult who is thinking of buying or selling a house\, downsizing\, and want to know your options? It’s never too soon to begin exploring and gathering information for the future. Experienced Realtor and Friends of the Westfield Senior Center Board member Lesley Lambert is at the Senior Center on the second Wednesday of every month from 12:30 to 1 p.m. on the ‘Deck’ of the Great Room to get you started in the process or answer any real estate questions that you might have. No advance sign-ups are necessary. \n  \nChess at the Westfield Senior Center \nEach Monday afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m.\, a small dedicated group of Chess players gathers for one of the quietest activities at the Westfield Senior Center. Les Hutton offers Chess instruction and guidance to anyone who is interested in learning the game. No prior experience is necessary and Chess sets are provided. Lessons are tailored to the participant’s abilities and goals. Experienced players can always enjoy a friendly game and helpful advice. The benefits of the game are numerous. Chess helps to improve memory\, concentration\, logical thinking\, and creativity. But most importantly\, it’s an enjoyable way to exercise your brain! Drop in and join the group any Monday afternoon. The Westfield Senior Center is located at 45 Noble Street. \n  \n“Be Aware\, Be Prepared!” Packets Available \nThe thought of preparing for disasters or emergencies can be overwhelming. Planning is key! The Medical Reserve Corps of Hampden County has prepared a family records packet to assist in the planning process. The document is extensive but simple to complete. “Be Aware\, Be Prepared!” packets are available at the Westfield Senior Center\, 45 Noble Street. Once completed\, the document should be kept in a clear watertight plastic bag\, ready to be taken with you in the event of a disaster if you need to evacuate your home. It is the hope of the Medical Reserve Corps that you will never have to use the “Be Aware\, Be Prepared!” document. But hope is not a plan! \n  \n“Viewpoints” Low Vision Support Group \nThe Westfield Senior Center’s “Viewpoints” low vision support group meets on the third Tuesday of the month from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. and is open to individuals with low vision and those who support them. Zumba Gold builds cardiovascular health by challenging the heart and working the muscles of the hips\, legs\, and arms with dance moves. Ditch the workout and come join the party! \n  \nAssistance for Retired Teachers \nThe Edith Stewart Chase Foundation grants emergency financial assistance to retired educators who confront an economic crisis. Those who receive benefits from the Massachusetts Teachers Retirement Board and who are members of the Retired Educators Association of Massachusetts (REAM) are eligible to apply to The Foundation for assistance. In addition to paint\, they experiment with charcoal\, pastels\, and other mediums. Instructor Elaine Lees encourages each student to explore the unlimited possibilities that art provides. Students will have the ability to create online profiles\, which allow them to apply for and be matched to multiple scholarships on both the local & national level for the 2019-2020 school year. The original production is a light-hearted\, entertaining presentation on the story of Westfield from its early beginnings in the 1660s up to the present day. The show is sponsored by the Westfield Women’s Club and is being performed in conjunction with the city-wide 350th birthday celebration in May of 2019. It is being produced by Shelley Haber. \n  \nThe purpose of the January 13 session is to encourage community members to be a part of the presentation by providing information about the show and answering any questions that people may have. Free and open to the public. \nShay’s Rebellion is viewed as an agrarian revolt pitting impoverished farmers in western Massachusetts against the wealthy merchant class of the coastal eastern part of the State. Come hear an account of the participants and events of this post-revolutionary uprising that both confirm and negate this long-held perception. \nDennis Picard will share the stories leading up to what was termed at the time\, the “Regulators\,” their activities in our area\, a few personages of local interest – including Westfield’s own General Shepard\, and the effect on our nation’s early history. Some demands of the 1780s such as the one calling for moving the State capital out of Boston have been rediscovered repeatedly and advocated for over the generations. \nDennis served as a consultant on the filming of the award winner “A Little Rebellion Now and Then: Prologue to the Constitution\,” Calliope Films\, 1985\, which dramatizes the turbulent years after the American Revolution that culminated in Shays’ Rebellion and the framing of the Constitution.

SUMMARY:Keepers of tradition: Art and folk heritage in Massachusetts - Mass Cultural Council
DESCRIPTION:In the 1860s\, entrepreneurs in Westfield\, Massachusetts invented machinery and perfected techniques that dramatically altered the way that whips were made worldwide. The practice of whip making grew rapidly\, employing roughly 80% of the workforce through the late 1800’s\, earning the community the moniker “The Whip City”. \nThe traditional Westfield whip\, sometimes called a buggy whip\, features exceptional weight\, balance\, and action\, making them prized by equestrian professionals and dedicated amateurs worldwide. Unlike a braided leather bull whip\, a Westfield whip has a center of machined rawhide encased in meticulously fitted strips of rattan and is covered with tough\, braided thread. Today\, rawhide and rattan have been replaced by fiberglass and nylon. Although the Westfield way of making whips is still done\, it is too labor-intensive to be cost effective. This fact motivated Carol Martin to found the Westfield Historic Industries Preservation Project (WHIPP)\, now a part of Westfield Museum Inc. The museum will feature a permanent working display of making Westfield whips using traditional methods. \nMartin’s father\, Harold J. Martin\, learned whip making by apprenticing to a master craftsman in the early 1940s. He went on to become president of Westfield Whip Manufacturing Co. After his death in 1992\, Carol took on whip making as a full time occupation. She is likely the only person alive today who has knowledge of how traditional Westfield whips were made. \nApprentice Stephanie Harder has shown a real talent for the making of some of the component parts that go into the traditional Westfield whip. Carol will impart both the skills and a working knowledge of the history of whip making in Westfield to someone who has the interest and ability to carry it on. Without that\, the hands-on understanding of what made Westfield the Whip City will be lost within a generation. As part of the City of Westfield’s 350th Anniversary in 2019\, master and apprentice will hold an open house at the museum to demonstrate whip making as it grew and developed in Westfield.

SUMMARY:Childhood Obesity Seminars at the Westfield YMCA
DESCRIPTION:For years parents have heard the dangers of childhood obesity but making the necessary lifestyle changes—as a family—remain the biggest barrier to real progress. Therefore\, in collaboration with Baystate Health & support from Kohl’s Cares grant\, the YMCA of Greater Westfield is offering the MIGHTY program. MIGHTY is Baystate Health’s pediatric weight management program that stands for Moving\, Improving and Gaining Health Together at the YMCA. MIGHTY is an evidence-based multi-component pediatric weight-management program aimed at children with a body mass index above the 90th percentile. This free program is a two-hour sessions\, twice a month\, over a six-month period during which children and their families engage with exercise specialists\, nutritionist and social workers in classroom instruction and group exercise sessions. Next session is for children between the ages of 10-12 beginning in January Tuesdays\, 4-6PM. To be eligible for the MIGHTY Program\, participants must be in the 90th percentile for height & weight\, complete a medical clearance forms /Inquiry forms & History Intake forms.
