SUMMARY:Keepers of tradition: Art and folk heritage in Massachusetts - Mass Cultural Council
DESCRIPTION:In the 1860s\, entrepreneurs in Westfield\, Massachusetts invented machinery and perfected techniques that dramatically altered the way that whips were made worldwide. The practice of whip making grew rapidly\, employing roughly 80% of the workforce through the late 1800’s\, earning the community the moniker “The Whip City”. \nThe traditional Westfield whip\, sometimes called a buggy whip\, features exceptional weight\, balance\, and action\, making them prized by equestrian professionals and dedicated amateurs worldwide. Unlike a braided leather bull whip\, a Westfield whip has a center of machined rawhide encased in meticulously fitted strips of rattan and is covered with tough\, braided thread. Today\, rawhide and rattan have been replaced by fiberglass and nylon. Although the Westfield way of making whips is still done\, it is too labor-intensive to be cost effective. This fact motivated Carol Martin to found the Westfield Historic Industries Preservation Project (WHIPP)\, now a part of Westfield Museum Inc. The museum will feature a permanent working display of making Westfield whips using traditional methods. \nMartin’s father\, Harold J. Martin\, learned whip making by apprenticing to a master craftsman in the early 1940s. He went on to become president of Westfield Whip Manufacturing Co. After his death in 1992\, Carol took on whip making as a full time occupation. She is likely the only person alive today who has knowledge of how traditional Westfield whips were made. \nApprentice Stephanie Harder has shown a real talent for the making of some of the component parts that go into the traditional Westfield whip. Carol will impart both the skills and a working knowledge of the history of whip making in Westfield to someone who has the interest and ability to carry it on. Without that\, the hands-on understanding of what made Westfield the Whip City will be lost within a generation. As part of the City of Westfield’s 350th Anniversary in 2019\, master and apprentice will hold an open house at the museum to demonstrate whip making as it grew and developed in Westfield.

DESCRIPTION:For years parents have heard the dangers of childhood obesity but making the necessary lifestyle changes—as a family—remain the biggest barrier to real progress. Therefore\, in collaboration with Baystate Health & support from Kohl’s Cares grant\, the YMCA of Greater Westfield is offering the MIGHTY program. MIGHTY is Baystate Health’s pediatric weight management program that stands for Moving\, Improving and Gaining Health Together at the YMCA. MIGHTY is an evidence-based multi-component pediatric weight-management program aimed at children with a body mass index above the 90th percentile. This free program is a two-hour sessions\, twice a month\, over a six-month period during which children and their families engage with exercise specialists\, nutritionist and social workers in classroom instruction and group exercise sessions. Next session is for children between the ages of 10-12 beginning in January Tuesdays\, 4-6PM. To be eligible for the MIGHTY Program\, participants must be in the 90th percentile for height & weight\, complete a medical clearance forms /Inquiry forms & History Intake forms. SUMMARY:Scholarship and Fellowship Funds Available
DESCRIPTION:The Horace Smith Fund\, now in its 120th year\, has scholarship and fellowship money available for graduates of Hampden County public and private high schools. Scholarships awards of $12\,000 are distributed as $3\,000 annually and renewable each year until graduation. Fellowship awards of $15\,000 are distributed as $5\,000 annually and renewable for two additional years. Students must maintain at least a B average in college. \nRecipients are selected on a variety of criteria\, including financial need\, college entrance exam scores\, class rank\, extra-curricular activities and recommendations. Of great importance is a personal written account of why the student feels deserving of financial assistance. Fellowship applicants must also submit their transcripts and\, if applicable\, GRE or degree-specific test scores. All recipients must be full-time students and residents of Hampden County. \nLast year\, $382\,000 was awarded to 36 individuals. Scholarships were given to 26 graduating seniors from 13 Hampden County high schools. Five scholarships were also awarded to current college students to assist them in completing their undergraduate degrees. Six fellowships were given to college graduates pursuing graduate degrees\, who had graduated from Hampden County high schools. \nThe Horace Smith Fund was established in 1899 by the successful and generous philanthropist named Horace Smith\, co-founder of Smith & Wesson\, located in Springfield. The scholarships and fellowships are named for Walter S. Barr\, a West Springfield businessman\, whose widow left the bulk of the family estate to The Horace Smith Fund in 1950. \nCompleted applications must be received either electronically or by mail to The Horace Smith Fund at 16 Union Avenue\, Suite 2K\, Westfield\, MA 01085 no later than March 15\, 2019. DESCRIPTION:A new\, exciting “Supper Club” series is being launched by Agawam Congregational Church at 745 Main Street with a special themed evening of supper and music. The first is a scheduled holiday supper with holiday music to be held Saturday\, December 15th at 5:00 p.m. with a very special\, catered meal by Agawam’s American Classics Restaurant. The menu offering includes 3 delicious courses of a colorful salad\, chicken Française\, red-roasted potatoes\, Manhattan-blend vegetables\, rolls\, butter\, cheesecake dessert\, and beverages. Each supper in the series will be catered by a different Agawam restaurant with its own specialty supper club meal offering. A theme for each supper will feature music recognizable of the specialty’s origin. \nThe suppers give the church the opportunities for major fundraising and the local restaurants receive additional recognition of their menu offerings. The idea was a suggestion by the church’s pastor Rev. Dr. Gregory Dawson. Church member Roberta Page contacted several Agawam restaurants to review the concept. \nTickets purchased for the December 15th supper at the church are $20. The evening’s attendees will receive a $5.00 Gift Certificate for American Classic’s Restaurant at 740 Springfield Street. The arena is located at 21 South Broad Street in Westfield. If you don’t have your own ice skates\, Amelia Park Ice Arena will have skate rentals available for $3 per person. Humason has held this annual free event at Amelia Park Ice Arena for many years as a way to give back to constituents with a family-friendly way to celebrate the holidays in the community. Please join us as we come together in support of each other during this Holy Christmas Season. For many of us in our community\, Christmas is a very difficult time of the year. It seems as if everyone around us is filled with joy and are busy getting ready for family gatherings\, etc; and all we want to do is hide. Grief comes in so many forms. You may have suffered the loss of a loved one\, a relationship\, a job\, loss of your faith\, a medical crisis or painful memories … you may be filled with sadness\, despair\, emotional numbness\, anger\, guilt or loneliness. Through this liturgy we uplift your tears and sadness to the One who transforms these dark moments into moments of hope\, reconciliation and renewal. This service will be led by the Rev. Domenic\, a certified Grief Recovery Specialist and a Pastoral Care Specialist certified by the American Association of Pastoral Counselors. A Westfield State University police cruiser will be parked on the campus green for an afternoon to “accept” donations. This event raises approximately $4\,500 total value in cash donations\, toys\, clothing and other items.

SUMMARY:Gateway bands and choirs announce winter concerts
DESCRIPTION:To enhance the holiday spirit throughout the community\, Gateway’s middle and high school bands and choirs are performing holiday favorites over two winter concerts. The students’ dedication and practice will make for a great performance for all attendees. \nThe Middle School Winter Concert will be held on Tuesday\, Dec 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center. Performers include the 5th grade band\, 6th grade band\, grade 7/8 band\, middle school jazz band and middle school choir. Band directors Beth Guertin and Renee Mosher and choir director Jerilyn Beauregard will conduct. There will be a poinsettia raffle and a baked goods and coffee sale during the concert. Admission is free and open to the public. \nOn Thursday\, Dec 13\, the high school musicians take the stage at 6:30 p.m. in the GPAC. Performing groups include the Show Choir\, Concert Choir\, Concert Band and Jazz Band. Admission is $2 or $1 with a canned good for the Huntington Food Pantry. Intermission will include a blanket raffle for the bands and the start of a raffle for a beautiful fire pit\, build by the school’s welding department. (Proceeds from the fire pit raffle will be split between the band and welding department). Instrumental music director Beth Guertin and Choral Director Jerilyn Beauregard will conduct the high school concert.

DESCRIPTION:Experience Music at United will present the Holyoke High School Madrigal Singers and Bell Choir. This holiday concert will take place on December 9 at 2pm at the United Congregational Church of Holyoke in Skinner Chapel. The Madrigal Singers are an a capella performing ensemble of singers. The Bell Choir consists of 16 ringers playing three octaves of Carillon Bells. \nThe United Congregational Church of Holyoke is bounded by High\, Appleton (Rte 141)\, and Maple Streets. Ample free parking is located in the lot immediately across Appleton Street and in the Franklin lot behind the War Memorial Building\, across Maple Street from the church. Street parking is free. The chapel and the church are fully accessible. All concerts are offered for a suggested donation of $10 ($5 for students and seniors).
