DESCRIPTION:Local numismatists will have an opportunity to add to their coin collections on Sunday\, Oct. 28\, when the members of the West Springfield Coin Club stage their semi-annual coin show at the Dante Club. The show\, which the club has staged twice-yearly at the 1198 Memorial Drive social club for almost three decades\, will begin at 9:30 a.m. and continue until about 3 p.m. Both admission to the show and parking at the Dante Club are free. The coin dealers participating in the show will not only buy and sell both U.S. and  foreign coins but will offer free appraisals of coins brought to the show by the visitors. \nClub president Peter Setian said all 28 tables available for the show at the Dante Club have been reserved\, both by local coin dealers and by dealers from the surrounding states. \nPatrons of past shows who left their addresses were sent postcards reminding them of the upcoming show and recipients who bring those postcards with them may claim a pick from a grab bag of vintage U.S. coins which will include two U.S. silver dollars. There will also be a raffle offered at the show with prizes which include a proof silver dollar and a silver proof set. \nThe club meets monthly\, with a summer hiatus during July and August\, at the Church of the Good Shepherd at 214 Elm St.\, in West Springfield. The meetings are generally staged on the second Sunday of the month. The remaining meetings of 2018 will be on Nov. 11 and Dec. 9. All are welcome. At each meeting\, a program about a specific aspect of coin collecting is offered after the club’s business is conducted. Following a social break\, members offer a small number of coins for sale at an auction.

SUMMARY:Daylight Rag Shag Parade
DESCRIPTION:Although the annual rag shag parade has been a tradition in the Whip City for almost a century\, this year’s parade will be the fourth annual Charlie Morse Memorial Rag Shag Parade – and the second daylight parade. In 2015\, the annual children’s parade sponsored by the Westfield and West Springfield lodge of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elk was named in memory of Charlie Morse\, a late member of the lodge who organized the parade for many years. Last year\, what had traditionally been a twilight parade was changed to a midday event due to safety concerns. \nOn Saturday\, Oct. 27\, children of all ages dressed in their Halloween costumes are invited to gather after 11 a.m. at the Elks Lodge on the corner of Washington and Franklin streets for the parade which will kick off at noon. \nPreceded by a police cruiser\, led by the Westfield High School Marching Band and followed by a city fire engine\, the costumed children and their adult escorts will parade through the city’s downtown before returning to the lodge. There\, each child will receive treats – a goodie bag\, a soda\, ice cream and a ticket for a bicycle raffle – and the festivities will continue with a costume contest for children in several different age categories. Before the children leave the lodge\, two winning raffle tickets will be drawn and\, in a tradition which dates back to the start of the Rag Shag parades\, one lucky boy and one lucky girl will each go home with a new bicycle. The bikes were donated by lodge members Save Andras and Mike Lacroix and the helmets which will go with the bikes were donated by the city’s Community Policing unit. Each bike winner will also be given a bike helmet donated by members of the lodge.

Join friends and family for a fun evening of tasting some new and unusual wines and beers being offered by a variety of distributors and brewers\, and munch on delicious food offerings. Local beer participants include the Spencer Brewery (the Trappist Monks from St. Joseph’s Abbey)\, Amherst Brewing\, and New City Brewery\, among others. DESCRIPTION:The Gateway Bands will be hosting a “Boo-vie Night” fundraiser on Friday\, Oct 26 in the Gateway Performing Arts Center (GPAC). ParaNorman is an animated comedy and adventure film. It features Norman\, a young boy\, who can speak to ghosts. Norman must stop a curse from a witch to save his town. \nThis movie night is open to elementary and middle school students and their families; please be advised the film contains some crude humor/mild language. Common Sense Media reports that this film (rated PG) may be scary for young children who don’t like monsters\, ghosts\, etc. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The Shipman Fund of the Gateway Education Foundation received a $30 thousand grant earlier this year\, which was used to update the projection system in the GPAC in order to show high resolution films.

DESCRIPTION:The Second Annual Auction of Services\, a fundraiser for Westfield Museum Inc.\, is scheduled to take place on Friday\, October 26 at Tekoa Country Club from 5:30 through 7:00 PM.  Proceeds from the Auction will be used to construct the Museum’s accessible entryway and to support ongoing operations. \nBeginning at 5:30 PM\, items to be auctioned will be available for viewing.  There is no charge for admission\, hot and cold hors d’oeuvres will be served and a cash bar will be available.  Bidding will begin at 6:00 PM\, supervised by Rock and Carol Palmer\, Auctioneers\, and continue until 7:00 pm.  A variety of services\, including a personalized family history\, auto detailing\, carpet cleaning and a steak-and-shrimp dinner have been donated. \nWestfield Museum Inc. is in the process of establishing a working museum within its property at 360 Elm Street.  Presently home to an extensive collection of machinery and artifacts dating from the U.S. Industrial Revolution\, which encompassed most of the 19th century\, the Museum plans to open to the public to celebrate Westfield’s 350th Anniversary in 2019.

DESCRIPTION:Education Club at Holyoke Community College\, in collaboration with nearly two dozen college clubs\, departments and programs – and community groups – will be hosting its second annual “Trunk or Treat” pre-Halloween celebration on Friday\, Oct. 26\, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Last year\, “Trunk or Treat\,” attracted more than 200 area children and their parents to the HCC campus for a safe\, fun\, and early alternative to traditional trick-or-treating on Halloween night. \nLike the inaugural event\, the second annual HCC Trunk or Treat will be held in Parking Lot R behind the Bartley Center for Athletics and Recreation on the HCC campus\, 303 Homestead Ave. Rather than going door to door seeking Halloween treats\, children can instead go “trunk to trunk” to collect their candy\, visiting cars decorated with seasonal themes and familiar stories and characters. Trunk or Treat is free and open to the public but children must be accompanied by an adult. \nLast year\, 17 HCC clubs and departments sponsored cars and decorated them for the event. Prizes were awarded to vehicle sponsors in various categories like Best Executed Theme\, Scariest Trunk\, Best Costumes and Most Original. HCC Early Children education coordinator and Education Club adviser Sheila Gould said she expects even more participants this year\, including cars sponsored by groups outside of HCC. Already\, Holyoke Public Schools\, DCF Foster Outreach\, the Hampden Country Sheriff’s Department\, and 413 Family Fitness have pledged to take part. So far\, Gould said\, 22 HCC clubs\, departments and community groups have signed up for the event and children can expect to see vehicles decked with themes such as the Wizard of Oz\, Lilo and Stitch\, SpongeBob Squarepants\, Enchanted Garden\, Willie Wonka\, Haunted House\, Just Dance\, Magic School Bus and Milky Way. Carol Martin will be presenting the history of the Westfield Whip Factory. Carol is a member of the founding family\, and the factory still makes whips to this day. The public is welcome\, and encouraged to join the Association. \nThe Agawam Historical Association (AHA)\, a 501(c) (3) non- profit organization\, has been part of the Agawam community for many years with the mission to preserve the Town’s history and artifacts and educate the citizens of Agawam. The Thomas Smith House\, located in Feeding Hills\, is the oldest existing house in Agawam (circa 1757) and was purchased by the AHA. The Fire House Museum on Elm Street\, houses antique fire trucks and apparatus on the ground floor and contains artifacts\, memorabilia and exhibits from Agawam and neighboring areas on the second floor.

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, October 23rd from 6:30-8:30pm: Ghostology 201: The Darker Side Revealed – with Agawam Paranormal. How do angels and demons\, of biblical lore\, affect our daily lives and the paranormal? What is the difference between necromancy and ghost hunting? What are the signs of a demonic possession? While it is believed that only a very small percentage of paranormal activity is actually caused by demons and their like (at least outside of Hollywood)\, it is unquestionably a very popular subject. In this program\, the Agawam Paranormal team will try to separate fact from fiction to see how it all fits together. Following the presentation\, the team will have three workstations set up for attendees to experience some of the most popular equipment used in paranormal investigations. After this\, they will conduct a short EVP session in the Library and review the results live\, revealing anything that may have been captured. Due to the subject matter\, this program may not be appropriate for young children. Members of the team will be available for questions.
