DESCRIPTION:Harmony House\, a home for the terminally ill\, will be holding their Third Annual Wine & Beer Tasting fundraising event on Friday\, October 26th from 6-9 PM at the Portuguese American Club\, 149 Exchange Street in Chicopee. Join friends and family for a fun evening of tasting some new and unusual wines and beers being offered by a variety of distributors and brewers\, and munch on delicious food offerings. In addition\, there will be non-alcoholic drinks to taste for those who prefer. Local beer participants include the Spencer Brewery (the Trappist Monks from St. Joseph’s Abbey)\, Amherst Brewing\, and New City Brewery\, among others. Many wines will be featured from local distributors\, including Williams Distributing\, and Everest Vodka will be offering samples. As a bonus\, Primavera Restaurant from Ludlow\, Mass.\, will be offering food samplings from their menu. \nThere will be an opportunity to participate in two raffles\, including a “Super Raffle\,” with prizes such as a flat screen TV\, a gas grill\, a power wash for your home\, and a few surprises. The regular raffle offers many desirable gifts such as golf foursomes\, wine baskets\, event tickets\, and more. ParaNorman is an animated comedy and adventure film. It features Norman\, a young boy\, who can speak to ghosts. Norman must stop a curse from a witch to save his town. \nThis movie night is open to elementary and middle school students and their families; please be advised the film contains some crude humor/mild language. Common Sense Media reports that this film (rated PG) may be scary for young children who don’t like monsters\, ghosts\, etc. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The Shipman Fund of the Gateway Education Foundation received a $30 thousand grant earlier this year\, which was used to update the projection system in the GPAC in order to show high resolution films.

DESCRIPTION:Education Club at Holyoke Community College\, in collaboration with nearly two dozen college clubs\, departments and programs – and community groups – will be hosting its second annual “Trunk or Treat” pre-Halloween celebration on Friday\, Oct. 26\, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Last year\, “Trunk or Treat\,” attracted more than 200 area children and their parents to the HCC campus for a safe\, fun\, and early alternative to traditional trick-or-treating on Halloween night. \nLike the inaugural event\, the second annual HCC Trunk or Treat will be held in Parking Lot R behind the Bartley Center for Athletics and Recreation on the HCC campus\, 303 Homestead Ave. Rather than going door to door seeking Halloween treats\, children can instead go “trunk to trunk” to collect their candy\, visiting cars decorated with seasonal themes and familiar stories and characters. Trunk or Treat is free and open to the public but children must be accompanied by an adult. \nLast year\, 17 HCC clubs and departments sponsored cars and decorated them for the event. Prizes were awarded to vehicle sponsors in various categories like Best Executed Theme\, Scariest Trunk\, Best Costumes and Most Original. HCC Early Children education coordinator and Education Club adviser Sheila Gould said she expects even more participants this year\, including cars sponsored by groups outside of HCC. Already\, Holyoke Public Schools\, DCF Foster Outreach\, the Hampden Country Sheriff’s Department\, and 413 Family Fitness have pledged to take part. So far\, Gould said\, 22 HCC clubs\, departments and community groups have signed up for the event and children can expect to see vehicles decked with themes such as the Wizard of Oz\, Lilo and Stitch\, SpongeBob Squarepants\, Enchanted Garden\, Willie Wonka\, Haunted House\, Just Dance\, Magic School Bus and Milky Way. The public is welcome\, and encouraged to join the Association. \nThe Agawam Historical Association (AHA)\, a 501(c) (3) non- profit organization\, has been part of the Agawam community for many years with the mission to preserve the Town’s history and artifacts and educate the citizens of Agawam. The Thomas Smith House\, located in Feeding Hills\, is the oldest existing house in Agawam (circa 1757) and was purchased by the AHA. The Fire House Museum on Elm Street\, houses antique fire trucks and apparatus on the ground floor and contains artifacts\, memorabilia and exhibits from Agawam and neighboring areas on the second floor.

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, October 23rd from 6:30-8:30pm: Ghostology 201: The Darker Side Revealed – with Agawam Paranormal. How do angels and demons\, of biblical lore\, affect our daily lives and the paranormal? What is the difference between necromancy and ghost hunting? What are the signs of a demonic possession? While it is believed that only a very small percentage of paranormal activity is actually caused by demons and their like (at least outside of Hollywood)\, it is unquestionably a very popular subject. In this program\, the Agawam Paranormal team will try to separate fact from fiction to see how it all fits together. Following the presentation\, the team will have three workstations set up for attendees to experience some of the most popular equipment used in paranormal investigations. After this\, they will conduct a short EVP session in the Library and review the results live\, revealing anything that may have been captured. Due to the subject matter\, this program may not be appropriate for young children. Members of the team will be available for questions.

Boyd\, Director and Former President\, Rotary Club of Southwick; Southwick Police K-9 Unit\, Town of Southwick; Jack Jeneral\, Major Donor\, Southwick K-9 Unit. \nThe objective of the award is to recognize individuals or groups who have embodied the characteristics of Rotary’s motto of “Service above Self.” In making the announcement\, Fox said “Rotary selects individuals and groups who have demonstrated excellence and have performed service that results in long-lasting value to the community\, programs that support the elderly\, the less fortunate\, the environment\, and most importantly our youth and future leaders of the community.” \nThe awards program was introduced in 1996 and to date has recognized 64 individuals and five nonprofit organizations from Southwick and the surrounding communities. The event takes place October 24 at Tucker’s Restaurant\, 625 College Highway\, Southwick\, starting with a social hour at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $25.00 and must be purchased in advance by contacting any Rotarian or Bob Fox at 413 579 4585. He will share his research through his talk\, “Westfield Looks at its Past.” A major archive on Westfield’s history is housed at the Westfield Athenaeum\, where he is a dedicated volunteer. Dr. Brown has discovered that\, because Montgomery land belonged to Westfield prior to the town being founded in 1780\, the 200th anniversary celebrated in 1869 included participants representing Montgomery! Plans for the 2019 anniversary are already generating excitement among residents throughout this area. Come enjoy the supper and the guest speaker!

DESCRIPTION:The Mastocytosis Society\, Inc. will hold its first Western Massachusetts support group meeting on Oct 20\, 2018 from 12 pm to 3 pm at the Episcopal Church of the Atonement on Broad Street in Westfield\, MA. This date has been named the International Mastocytosis and Mast Cell Disease Awareness Day. \nWe welcome all patients with both diagnosed and suspected mast cell diseases and multiple allergies\, their families\, caregivers\, friends\, as well as interested students and medical personnel from anywhere in MA and beyond. Mast cells run the immune system and are responsible for allergic reactions\, headaches\, GI issues\, and multiple other issues when they are over active. A problem that is growing in recognition\, mast cell disease is still unknown or misunderstood by many medical personnel. \nOur Speaker will be Dr. Jonathan Bayuk\, Medical Director of AIANE\, Chief of the Allergy and Immunology Division at Baystate Medical Center\, Director of Allergy and Immunology Curriculum at Baystate Medical Center and Tufts University School of Medicine\, assistant professor of medicine at Tufts and instructor at Springfield College. A noted expert in the field\, Dr. Bayuk is both a patient favorite and an engaging\, gifted speaker. There will be time for questions\, and to engage with other attendees. \nThere is no fee to attend. Due to possible patient reactions\, we ask that attendees do not use/wear any scented products (including heavily scented hygiene products) or use any hand sanitizers\, and refrain from eating or drinking anything but water during the meeting.
