DESCRIPTION:The Mastocytosis Society\, Inc. will hold its first Western Massachusetts support group meeting on Oct 20\, 2018 from 12 pm to 3 pm at the Episcopal Church of the Atonement on Broad Street in Westfield\, MA. This date has been named the International Mastocytosis and Mast Cell Disease Awareness Day. \nWe welcome all patients with both diagnosed and suspected mast cell diseases and multiple allergies\, their families\, caregivers\, friends\, as well as interested students and medical personnel from anywhere in MA and beyond. Mast cells run the immune system and are responsible for allergic reactions\, headaches\, GI issues\, and multiple other issues when they are over active. A problem that is growing in recognition\, mast cell disease is still unknown or misunderstood by many medical personnel. \nOur Speaker will be Dr. Jonathan Bayuk\, Medical Director of AIANE\, Chief of the Allergy and Immunology Division at Baystate Medical Center\, Director of Allergy and Immunology Curriculum at Baystate Medical Center and Tufts University School of Medicine\, assistant professor of medicine at Tufts and instructor at Springfield College. A noted expert in the field\, Dr. Bayuk is both a patient favorite and an engaging\, gifted speaker. There will be time for questions\, and to engage with other attendees. \nThere is no fee to attend. Whatever the verdict\, the outcome will definitely be laughter. DESCRIPTION:Westfield State University will hold the third annual Henry Wefing Memorial Golf Classic on October 19 at 11 a.m. at Tekoa Country Club in Westfield. Co-sponsored by the University’s Communication Department and the Division of Institutional Advancement\, proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit the Henry Wefing Journalism Scholarship Fund. Dr. Wefing was a journalist for 20 years for several newspapers before he began teaching at Westfield State in 1985. \nDr. Wefing taught journalism and writing courses for almost 30 years until his passing in 2015. The scholarship was created by faculty and family members in memory of Dr. Wefing’s dedication to students and to the journalism field. Since 2016\, the Henry Wefing Journalism Scholarship has been awarded annually to students pursuing a journalism-related career. \nTournament participation is $65 for students\, $90 for individuals\, or $350 per foursome. The Westfield Council On Aging/Senior Center located at 45 Noble Street\, will host a special educational luncheon entitled “Senior Patrol: Avoiding Identity Theft\, Scams\, and Fraud” on Wednesday\, October 17 at 11 a.m. Hear the facts regarding identity theft\, scams and fraud\, how they target the elderly\, and learn the steps you can take to protect yourself. Most seniors freeze because they don’t know what to do or where to turn when they become a victim. This presentation will leave older adults feeling empowered\, and knowing when and how to step into immediate action! Milagros Johnson has more than 17 years of experience working for the Mayor’s Office of Consumer Information\, a Local Consumer Program funded by and working in cooperation with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office\, and serving Hampden County and parts of Worcester County. The special “Senior Safety” luncheon menu will include two Senior Center favorite pies: Shepherd’s pie and for dessert\, apple pie `a la mode. Tickets are $3 and must be purchased in advance. Seating is limited. Participants may purchase no more than four tickets per person.

This season’s book title is Beartown by best-selling author Fredrik Backman. \nAt its core\, Beartown is a story about a one-high school town\, much like our own. This story is told through the experience of Beartown’s hockey team- a winning team with big dreams. As the reader learns\, the themes that resonate within the heart and soul of this fictional community could have been meaningfully told through any of the many sports or activities that are important to the high school. Small town hopes and dreams collide with real-life consequences and creates a soul-searching read in Beartown. \nThe Zip One Book Symposium is a community group that began three years ago as a community-wide book discussion group. SUMMARY:Westfield State holds Special Olympics Flag Football Tournament
DESCRIPTION:For the eighth year\, Special Olympics athletes from all across Massachusetts will gather at Westfield State University for the Special Olympics Massachusetts Flag Football Qualifying Tournament. The qualifying tournament will take place on Sunday October 14 beginning with team registration at 9 a.m.\, opening ceremonies at 9:45a.m.\, and competition beginning at 10 a.m. This is one of three Special Olympics Massachusetts Flag Football Qualifying tournaments going on throughout the state on Sunday. These tournaments are the qualifying events for the State Tournament which be held November 17 at Gillette Stadium and Franklin High School. In addition to Flag Football\, Special Olympics Cheerleading will also be taking place on the campus at an indoor location.12 teams from Western and Central Massachusetts will be competing in the Flag Football Tournament. The event is hosted in partnership with WSU Athletics and student athletes serve as volunteers\, including WSU football players as officials.

Christy’s family is very involved with St Mary’s Parish and her two young boys attend school there.
