DESCRIPTION:Westfield State University will hold the third annual Henry Wefing Memorial Golf Classic on October 19 at 11 a.m. at Tekoa Country Club in Westfield. Co-sponsored by the University’s Communication Department and the Division of Institutional Advancement\, proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit the Henry Wefing Journalism Scholarship Fund. Dr. Wefing was a journalist for 20 years for several newspapers before he began teaching at Westfield State in 1985. \nDr. Wefing taught journalism and writing courses for almost 30 years until his passing in 2015. The scholarship was created by faculty and family members in memory of Dr. Wefing’s dedication to students and to the journalism field. Since 2016\, the Henry Wefing Journalism Scholarship has been awarded annually to students pursuing a journalism-related career. \nTournament participation is $65 for students\, $90 for individuals\, or $350 per foursome. Most seniors freeze because they don’t know what to do or where to turn when they become a victim. Milagros Johnson has more than 17 years of experience working for the Mayor’s Office of Consumer Information\, a Local Consumer Program funded by and working in cooperation with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office\, and serving Hampden County and parts of Worcester County. The special “Senior Safety” luncheon menu will include two Senior Center favorite pies: Shepherd’s pie and for dessert\, apple pie `a la mode. Tickets are $3 and must be purchased in advance. SUMMARY:Westfield State holds Special Olympics Flag Football Tournament
DESCRIPTION:For the eighth year\, Special Olympics athletes from all across Massachusetts will gather at Westfield State University for the Special Olympics Massachusetts Flag Football Qualifying Tournament. The qualifying tournament will take place on Sunday October 14 beginning with team registration at 9 a.m.\, opening ceremonies at 9:45a.m.\, and competition beginning at 10 a.m. This is one of three Special Olympics Massachusetts Flag Football Qualifying tournaments going on throughout the state on Sunday. These tournaments are the qualifying events for the State Tournament which be held November 17 at Gillette Stadium and Franklin High School. In addition to Flag Football\, Special Olympics Cheerleading will also be taking place on the campus at an indoor location.12 teams from Western and Central Massachusetts will be competing in the Flag Football Tournament. The event is hosted in partnership with WSU Athletics and student athletes serve as volunteers\, including WSU football players as officials.

Over 30 local artisans and crafters and artisans will have unique\, and often one of a kind\, items for sale. A raffle will also be held for unique items donated by the crafters and artisans. Crafters and artisans can be found on the grounds of the Town Hall\, in the Auditorium and in the Senior Center. In addition to the unique items available for purchase\, there will be a sale of new and gently used craft items. Light refreshments will be available for purchase. DESCRIPTION:The 42nd Annual St. Stanislaus Parish Bazaar will be held the weekend of October 13th & 14th at St. Stanislaus School/Parish Center\, 534 Front St. Chicopee. The hours are Saturday\, 12-8 pm and Sunday\, 11 am to 6 pm. Special Events: Joe Dziok will be the Disc Jockey on both days. Jeff & Joe Polka Band will perform on Saturday at 1 P.M. Sarah the Fiddler will perform on Saturday at 5:30 P.M. and on Sunday at 3:30 P.M. \nThere will be a Polish/American kitchen\, featuring our delicious pierogi\, golumbki\, and kapusta as well as hamburgers\, hot dogs\, baked potatoes and more. For this event\, the volunteers will be making 2\,200 golumbki\, 20\,000 pierogi\, and 50 gallons of kapusta. We have a Take-Out Window\, so you can take home some of the great food. We will be featuring Chicopee Provision kielbasa\, hamburgers and hot dogs. The baked goods booth will feature plenty of homemade breads\, cakes\, cookies\, and many Polish delicacies. \nThere will be plenty of handmade items along with a large variety of items to purchase for your family and friends. Back by popular demand will be the Christmas Gift Shoppe. You can get a jump start on your holiday shopping. There will be many gifts for family and friends and even a great assortment of gifts for your pets. Our Vintage Jewelry Booth is returning with even more great pieces. SUMMARY:5K Dam Run returns to Homecoming Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for Saturday\, Oct. 13 to run the 2nd Annual 5K Dam Run\, part of Gateway’s “Homecoming Weekend”. Run the challenging but scenic home course used by Gateway’s Cross-Country Teams\, which includes running up the back of Littleville Dam and scenic views along Littleville Lake. Runners of all ages and abilities are welcome. \nThe Class of 2020 will host a Breakfast Tailgate in the Gateway Regional High School parking lot\, beginning at 8 a.m.\, so grab some goodies for before or after the race at that time. Race registration opens at 8:30 a.m. in the parking lot of Gateway Regional High School. The timed race begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at the top of Littleville Dam\, where medals will be awarded to top finishers. Entrance is free but donations will be accepted for the Gateway Education Foundation at registration. \nThis race is a service project of the Gateway Boys Cross-Country Team\, coached by alumnus John Crane. Timing services are donated by The Berkshire Running Center in Pittsfield\, owned by alumnus Kent Lemme. \nHomecoming Weekend takes place Thursday\, Oct. 11 through Sunday\, Oct. 14. Events benefiting the Foundation also include a kick-off dinner at Chester Common Table on Thursday evening (GEF will receive 15 percent of sales); a family movie night on Friday evening starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center (movie is free but donations will be accepted for the Shipman Fund. In addition to the 5k Dam Run\, Saturday events include a Historic Canoe/Kayak Tour of Littleville Lake on Saturday\, Oct. 13 starting at noon; BYOB (bring your own boat) and please support the Gateway Outdoor Club with a donation. It wouldn’t be Homecoming Weekend without “Soccer Saturday” (four high school games starting at 11 a.m. on Booster Field and ending with the Annual Alumni Soccer Game under the lights). On Sunday\, alumni will report to the band room for rehearsals during the day ending with an Alumni Band Concert in the Gateway Performing Arts Center at 4 p.m. More details coming soon.

DESCRIPTION:The YMCA of Greater Westfield is offering a small group personal training program for skiers. This is for participants who are willing to work on increasing their physical ability for the slopes while decreasing their injury potential. The program will focus on sport movement-agility\, multidirectional speed\, acceleration & deceleration\, sport strength-muscular endurance\, multi-joint strength\, and explosive power and sport balance-stability\, proprioception\, and neuromuscular pathway that apply to skiing. \nThe goal is to develop speed\, stamina and balance with a long term enjoyment of fitness and skills that can be applied to the ski slopes. Get more runs in on a lift ticket\, and have more fun! This 45 minute class will be offered for six Saturdays beginning October 13th at 10:00AM. \nThe class will be held at the Westfield Y’s Functional Training Room and taught by our certified Personal trainer\, Karen Saczawa. Registration is limited to 8 participants and costs $50.00 for non-members and $25.00 for YMCA members. DESCRIPTION:The To Serve & Protect Park of Honor will be proudly presented by the Kiwanis Club of Westfield on Saturday November 3rd on the front lawn at South Middle School across from Parker Memorial Park. Row upon row of flags will be displayed with a ribbon on each flag containing information about the person the flag is in honor of. \nIndividuals\, families and companies can sponsor a flag in honor of the person (past or present). All are welcome to walk through the flags\, read names\, listen to and share their stories of themselves\, family members\, friends and others who have given in many different ways so we are able to celebrate our flag and freedom. We will offer college scholarships to children or grandchildren of those who serve and protect with the funds we collect. The Park of Honor serves as a reminder and a tribute to all those who served or are presently serving to protect our country.
