DESCRIPTION:The YMCA of Greater Westfield is offering a small group personal training program for skiers. This is for participants who are willing to work on increasing their physical ability for the slopes while decreasing their injury potential. The program will focus on sport movement-agility\, multidirectional speed\, acceleration & deceleration\, sport strength-muscular endurance\, multi-joint strength\, and explosive power and sport balance-stability\, proprioception\, and neuromuscular pathway that apply to skiing. \nThe goal is to develop speed\, stamina and balance with a long term enjoyment of fitness and skills that can be applied to the ski slopes. Get more runs in on a lift ticket\, and have more fun! This 45 minute class will be offered for six Saturdays beginning October 13th at 10:00AM. \nThe class will be held at the Westfield Y’s Functional Training Room and taught by our certified Personal trainer\, Karen Saczawa. Registration is limited to 8 participants and costs $50.00 for non-members and $25.00 for YMCA members. DESCRIPTION:The To Serve & Protect Park of Honor will be proudly presented by the Kiwanis Club of Westfield on Saturday November 3rd on the front lawn at South Middle School across from Parker Memorial Park. Row upon row of flags will be displayed with a ribbon on each flag containing information about the person the flag is in honor of. \nIndividuals\, families and companies can sponsor a flag in honor of the person (past or present). All are welcome to walk through the flags\, read names\, listen to and share their stories of themselves\, family members\, friends and others who have given in many different ways so we are able to celebrate our flag and freedom. We will offer college scholarships to children or grandchildren of those who serve and protect with the funds we collect. The Park of Honor serves as a reminder and a tribute to all those who served or are presently serving to protect our country. Deadline is October 26\, 2018. \nThe Serve & Protect Honor Park will include 3 foot by 5 foot American flags at a cost of $30.00 each or (4) flags for $100.00. The Patriots Pen Essay Contest is for students in grades 6-8 and provides for students in these grades to compete for $54\,500 in cash prizes. The Voice of Democracy Contest is for students in grades 9-12 where they compete for $154\,000 in scholarships and incentives with the top scholarship awarded at the national level being $30\,000. \nThe Citizenship Education Teacher Award is for teachers in all grades nominated by their peers\, which recognizes their contributions as educators who instill a sense of patriotism\, duty\, and service. Winners selected at the national level are awarded cash prizes for themselves and for their school\, along with recognition at the VFW National Convention. \nThe VFW Scout of the Year Award is a scholarship competition for those Boy or Girl Scouts ages 15-18 who have attained the rank of Eagle Scout\, Gold Award\, or Sea Scout Quartermaster\, are enrolled in High School and are active within their troop. First Place at the national level awards is a $5\,000 scholarship\, second place $3\,000\, and third place $1\,000. \nThe VFW Public Servant Award is for members of the community’s Police\, Fire\, Medical Reserve Corps\, and EMT Departments that provides for honor and recognition of each winner at the VFW State Convention. \nDeadlines for entry for Patriots Pen\, Voice of Democracy\, and the Citizen Education Teacher Award are October 31; Scout of the Year Award is March 1\, 2019; Public Servant Award is January 1\, 2019. DESCRIPTION:MEMOIR WRITING WORKSHOP FOR SENIORS: The Southwick Public Library is pleased to offer a 3-part memoir writing workshop funded with a grant from Sarah Gillett Services for the Elderly\, Inc. Is there a special event or person in your life that you’d like to share with family of friends? This workshop will help you do that. A memoir is different from an autobiography which encompasses your entire life. A memoir is about a moment in time that was special in some way. Haven Williams will lead our workshop at 1:30 p.m. on October 10th\, 17th and 24th. You will need to register in advance for this program since space is limited. We request that you attend all 3 sessions. This program is open to those that are 55 years-old and up. Trivia program for adults on Wednesday\, October 17th starting at 6:30 p.m. Join in the fun whether you are a team of one or a team of 5! All questions will be projected on a big screen and there is an audio system to make sure everyone hears the questions. One member from each team will need to have a smart phone. Using the library’s Wi-Fi\, you will submit your answer right from your phone. At Challenge! Trivia\, they run multiple team challenges during each episode that get you up out of your seat and mingling with other teams. Also\, there are audio and video questions that add an additional interactive element to the night. DESCRIPTION:Memoir Writing Workshop for Senior Citizens: The Southwick Public Library has received a grant from Sarah Gillett Services for the Elderly\, Inc. making it possible to offer a three-part memoir writing workshop for senior citizens. The sessions will be facilitated by Haven Williams and the 3-part program will meet on Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. in the library’s Community Room. The first meeting will be on October 10th\, the second session will be October 17th and the final session will be held on October 24th. Attendance on all three dates is preferred. Registration is required for all senior citizens who are interested in participating. SUMMARY:VHS to DVD-R fundraiser for Gateway film studio
DESCRIPTION:Gateway’s Video Production class continues to raise funds for new equipment and other needs. They are converting home videos and educational videos from VHS to DVD as a yearlong fundraiser. The class provides videos of current events on the district website\, and also creates film for video competitions\, generates music videos and movie remakes. The cost is $10 for the first conversion\, and additional DVDs of the same item are just $5. Under copyright laws\, television shows and movies that have been taped cannot be converted. Educators’ school videos are free (limit 5)! Converting a VHS to DVD should take approximately 1-2 weeks\, unless more than 10 tapes have been submitted—that could take up to 4 weeks. DESCRIPTION:The Westfield Council On Aging and the Occupational Therapy Department at Springfield College will once again collaborate to offer a limited number of older adults in Westfield a unique home assessment opportunity. Pairs of students determine the level of safety and convenience in the home of their assigned older participant by conducting a home visit and an interview. The students address problem areas and make recommendations in a written report that is reviewed by the class professor\, Dr. Joan Simmons. Participants receive a copy of the report so that they can implement any of the recommendations if they choose to do so. This is a wonderful opportunity for older adults with any mobility or sensory limitations to discover how they might function more easily and independently at home.
