SUMMARY:Author Seeking Information on Westfield Mayor Alice Burke
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Journal of Massachusetts is writing an article about former mayor Alice D. Burke (1892-1974) for the Westfield 350th Anniversary Book. Alice Burke was the first female mayor in all of New England. She was first elected mayor of Westfield in 1939\, and served 4 terms as mayor on-and-off (1939-43\, 1953-55\, 1957-59). We would greatly appreciate your help in creating this chapter commemorating Westfield’s history. \n  \nThe Historical Journal of Massachusetts has been published by Westfield State University since 1972. It is published twice a year\, and a subscription is only $12 annually. Each issue is 180 pages. The journal covers all topics and aspects of the Commonwealth’s past\, from its Native American heritage\, through its colonial and revolutionary roots\, to the present. We offer articles about every facet of Massachusetts history\, politics\, culture\, peoples\, and ethnic groups. SUMMARY:Rocky’s Ace Hardware Accepting Donations for Annual Pet Food & Supplies Drive
DESCRIPTION:Rocky’s Ace Hardware\, a family-owned business with neighborhood-based stores in six states\, doesn’t forget the pets when it comes to spreading holiday cheer. \n  \nRocky’s ninth annual Pet Food & Supplies Drive\, a campaign to support local animal shelters\, will take place November 20 through December 23 at all Rocky’s locations. Those interested in donating can do so by depositing pet-related goods in designated bins in each store. \n  \nAccording to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)\, there are approximately 6.5 million companion animals that enter shelters every year. Of these\, the Humane Society of the United States estimates that around 4 million are adopted—leaving many pets continually dependent on these compassionate havens. \n  \n“When we think about giving to those in need\, it’s important to think about our furry friends\, too\,” said Rocco Falcone\, president of Rocky’s. “The holiday season is a perfect time to help provide necessities for these animals\, so they can stay safe and healthy until they can find a caring home of their own.” \n  \nTo help aid in this endeavor\, Rocky’s has partnered with local area animal shelters to provide them with the necessary food and supplies they need to ensure their locations continue to operate. A list of supplies most often requested will be on display at each location. Typical items include food\, paper towels\, brooms\, trash bags and bleach\, and more festive options include treats\, collars and pet toys.
