SOUTHWICK – The CPC (Community Preservation Committee) held a meeting last Tuesday night to discuss the application submitted by the Franklin Land Trust for the Conserve North Pond project.

As of right now, it costs $5,000,000 to purchase the 146-acre North Pond land. Since the Franklin Land Trust plans on buying the property if the $5,000,000 total is reached, they will be able to get paid back.

The application that was sent to the CPC, asks for $1,000,000. The Fish and Wildlife is set to give $1,250,000.

If the Franklin Land Trust is able to get the application, it would allow them to help preserve the land.

“This could be rolled over into the next fiscal year so it doesn’t have to be closed on July 1, 2017,” said Conservation Commission Coordinator Dennis Clark.

According to Clark, the second appraisal on the North Pond property will result in how much the state and town will be getting for the land. Then, the existing $400,000 land grant will be rewritten and come back to the Select Board for their approval.

Regardless of what the next appraisal will be, the North Pond supporters will conduct their next fundraiser on Feb. 18 with the North Pond ice fishing derby.
