SOUTHWICK – With the end of the current construction season quickly approaching, the continuation of the Congamond Road project needs to be planned. According to Southwick DPW Director Randy Brown, Pereira Construction, the contractor for the project, is looking to choose a location on Congamond Road to stop the project before winter.
Brown said that selecting an exact location to stop is crucial because parts of Congamond Road have high elevation, and others with low elevation. Stopping the project at a big cut or fill could negatively affect the project.
“They’re going to go as far as they can but they need to keep in mind that there’s change in elevation,” said Brown. “We just don’t want to have any drop offs that are unnecessary.”
Currently, Pereira is working on the drainage system and have most of it complete. After the drainage system is finished, the road will be widened, reconstructed, and then paved. Brown noted it’s important to have the road to have some type of pavement before winter arrives.
Pereira’s contract allows them until the end of 2019 but they are on schedule to provide the final paving on Congamond Road in April of 2019.
Mass DOT is funding the $4.1 million project and has complete oversight. The project includes a new drainage system, a sidewalk on the south side of the road, and new bike lanes.
