WESTFIELD: Gerald V. Matthews, 74, passed away Friday March 4, 2016 surrounded by his family. Born April 7, 1941 in Hartford, CT, he was the son of the late Vincent and Helen (McSweeney) Matthews. Gerald has been a resident of Westfield since 1954. He graduated from Westfield High School and attended the University of New Hampshire. He was proud of his service in the United States Marine Corps. Gerald founded and owned Public Employee Service Organization. He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church in Westfield and a speaker for the retreat board of the Passionist Monastery in West Springfield. Gerald was an avid VW Bug enthusiastic and member of the Connecticut Volkswagen Association. He had a keen interest in history, was a member of the Civil War Historic Battle Preservation Trust and a volunteer at the Storrowton Village Museum in West Springfield. Gerald leaves his loving wife of 52 years, Veronica (Whelan) Matthews, two sons, James J. Matthews and his wife Pamela of Justin, TX and Timothy V. Matthews and his wife Bridget of Westfield, one daughter, Maura-Ann H. Matthews and her husband Christopher of Burien, WA; and 9 grandchildren, Finnian, Aidan, Megan, Wyatt, Brenna, Fionnuala, Niamh, Declan, and Deirdre. Calling hours are Wednesday March 9, 2016 from 4-7 PM at the Robert E Cusack Funeral Home, 94 Main St (Rt 20). A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Trinity Church at 10 am on Thursday March 10th . Burial will follow in St Mary’s Cemetery, all in Westfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kamp for Kids at Camp Togowauk, 754 Russell Rd , Westfield, MA 01085
