WESTFIELD – Geraldine M. Markett, 85, of Westfield MA died unexpectedly at home on Monday, January 22nd, 2024. She was born in Westfield on August 4th, 1938 to the late John L. Coach and Helen T. Fitzgerald.
She was predeceased by her husband Ronald J. Markett, Sr. in 1998.
She is survived by her children: Deborah Markett of West Hartford CT; Donna Wegge and her husband Jason of Monson MA; and Ronald Markett, Jr. of Westfield MA. She leaves behind her two grandchildren Erik and Linnea Wegge of whom she was very proud. Gerry (as she preferred to be called) also leaves behind her siblings and their spouses: John (Joanne) Coach, Robert (Nora) Coach and Linda (Billy) Barnet. She also leaves behind three nephews and three nieces.
Gerry was a lifelong resident of Westfield, graduating from Westfield State College in 1960 with a degree in Elementary Education. Although she began her teaching career in Chicopee, she was employed by the Westfield Public Schools as a third-grade teacher (teaching mainly at Ashley Street School and Abner Gibbs) for 34 years until her retirement in 2000. Gerry enjoyed watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, As Schools Match Wits and Fox News. She had a sharp mind and was always ready for a robust debate about politics. She enjoyed her monthly luncheons at the Westwood with her childhood girlfriends. Gerry loved all kinds of music. She enjoyed attending the Majestic Theater with her sister Linda, especially when it was a musical. She will be missed!!!
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center in Springfield. The funeral will be held on Monday, January 29th at Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad Street, Westfield. Calling hours will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home followed by a funeral Mass in Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church, 127 Holyoke Road, Westfield at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. www.firtionadams.com
