WESTFIELD – The Great Pumpkin that Westfield metalwork artist Sebastian Glebocki made for the Pumpkinfest will be featured at the WMAS Halloween Ball in the MGM Springfield courtyard On Oct. 26.
Glebocki made the pumpkin, which is 8 feet tall and weighs 500 pounds, free of charge for Pumpkinfest, where MGM officials saw it, and asked if they could feature it at the Halloween Ball. Glebocki will be transporting the Great Pumpkin to MGM in a trailer, and bringing it back for installation on Park Square Green until Thanksgiving.
At last week’s Parks & Recreation meeting, Bob Plasse and Danny Nason of Westfield on Weekends asked for permission to install the pumpkin on the green for the season. Plasse reported that eight to ten thousand people came to PumpkinFest, making it “the most successful event Westfield ever had,” and crediting DPW Directors David Billips and Francis Cain for their help.
Parks & Rec member Sara Unger asked if the pumpkin could be secured on the green. Nason said it could be secured on the stage, and Billips said they would figure out a way to secure it. “Fran’s like MacGyver,” Billips said.
Glebocki of Sebastian and Sons Custom Metal Works has been fabricating stairs, railings, signs, and footbridges since 1991. Photos of many of his works are posted on his Facebook page.
He also creates sculptures out of new and used materials, and has made seven bicycles out of recycled industrial and farm materials. Glebocki said he is hoping one day to display the bicycles on the Rail Trail throughout the city. “Landfills are full enough. I’m trying to alleviate that,” Glebocki said.
