HOLYOKE – By definition, a hawk is a bird of prey which has strong claws adapted for seizing. So it comes as no surprise that Dean Tech Hawks’ junior guard Wilfredo Arvelo swooped in to hit a buzzer-beater 3-pointer to send the game into overtime, where the hometown Hawks sent the Rams’ boys’ hoops team home with a 64-58 loss Tuesday night.
Dean Tech went to the free throw line, trailing by three points last night with three seconds remaining. The Hawks missed the front end of two foul shots, and intentionally missed the second. The ball kicked out to Arvelo who drained his first shot of the game, a tying 3.
Dean Tech rode the momentum through overtime. The Hawks pulled away with a six-point margin of victory.
“This was a tough one to lose when we had them,” said Southwick coach Joe Molta, whose Rams fell to 4-6. “It’s unfortunate because we should have won – unbelievable.”
Tommy Mahoney led Southwick with 19 points.
