John M. Gogol

PORTLAND, OR: John Michael Gogol passed away on July 23, 2015. He was born in Westfield, MA on August 15, 1938 to the late Michael and Jennie (Petros) Gogol.

John graduated from Westfield High School ’56, Clark University BA ’60, University of Washington MA ’64, and Ph.D. candidate University of Washington ’69. He taught at Colorado State University and Pacific University. As a scholar, John’s honors were many: a Fulbright Fellow, Graves Prize award, listed in Who’s Who in the West, Reference Encyclopedia of the American Indian. As a historian, John’s life goal was to record the art and history of the Native American Indian. John edited and published the American Indian Basketry Magazine which can be found in museums and libraries around the world, as well as, Mr. Cogito Press, a publication of poetry and translations, with an emphasis on Polish writers.

John leaves behind his loving family, William Gogol and wife Marie of Westfield, MA, Jane Watras of Westfield, MA, David Gogol and wife Kay of Alpine, WY, Carol Soto and husband Luis of Westfield, MA his nieces Katherine Watras and Jenny Gogol and nephews Matt and Michael Soto. He is predeceased by his brother Daniel Gogol.

John will be sorely missed by his family and his many friends in the Portland area.

We ask that you keep John forevermore in your thoughts, memories and prayers.

His memorial service will be private.
