BLANDFORD – John M. Haight of Blandford died unexpectedly, yet peacefully, in his sleep at home on July 31, 2013 at the age of 71. Born in New York, N.Y., he was the son of the late Wilson Haight and Isabelle (Adie) Haight.
He is survived by his brother, David and wife, Barbara; his sister, Katherine and husband, Peter; nephew, Alex and niece, Becky and their families; and his long-time friends in the Jensen family of Blandford.
A graduate of Trinity-Pawling School and Nichols College where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in forestry, Jack was on the Swim Team, The Rifle Club, and The Fire Department. He served his country in the Army where he was stationed in Korea.
Jack’s main employment in the Blandford area was as the Assistant Farm Manager for “Blueberry Joe” Kuznicki and his family’s Blandford Brand Blueberries. Perhaps best known locally for his service and dedication to the town of Blandford, he worked for the town and was a willing volunteer in numerous capacities. This included assisting the Water Department in the 1980’s and 1990’s, assisting the Dog Officer, and, most importantly, serving as a police officer. He started in 1981 as a special officer, retired as sergeant after 17 years, returned later as a special officer to help out the department, and served as a constable the entire time of over 30 years right up until his recent death. Most saw him in that role during town elections as he oversaw the ballot box. In later years, Jack was a regular attendee at activities with fellow senior citizens in town.
There will be a reception remembering Jack on Saturday, August 10th, starting at 2:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the Blandford Town Offices. The graveside burial service will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Blandford Police Association at 1 Russell Stage Road, Suite 13, Blandford, MA 01008 to be used for education, equipment, and training of future police officers for the town.
