CHESTER – The Southern Hilltowns Adult Education Center (SHAEC) will be offering four free workshops over five weeks focusing on self-care, taught by Chesterfield resident Louise Hurwitz. Hurwitz is a mental health counselor, coach, teacher, and faculty member in higher education for the past 20 years.
Strategies to Build Resiliency through Self Care will be held Monday, Nov. 12, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Village Enterprise Center, 26A Main St., Chester

The skills of resiliency can have a profound impact on our ability to stay balanced even in the face of struggle and challenge. Hurwitz’s deep commitment to helping people develop the core traits of resiliency and then apply them to create more positive and happy lives is the driving force in her work as a teacher, coach, and workshop leader. She teaches full courses on developing resiliency and facilitates workshops and presentations in colleges, high schools, and in the private sector. As a coach, she also helps clients to use the skills of resiliency as they make changes in their lives.
Cultivating Signature Strengths will be held Monday, Nov. 19, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Village Enterprise Center, 26A Main St., Chester
You may be stronger than you think! When life is hard, it’s important to recognize and value the strengths you already have that will help you get through whatever you’re facing.
In Cultivating Signature Strengths, Hurwitz says during difficult times, it’s critical that we know what strengths we can draw upon to help us be resilient. This workshop will look at the relationship between resilience and strengths and how by playing to your strengths, you can maintain balance in your life.
Developing Positive Thinking Habits, Part 1 and 2 will be on Monday, Nov. 26 and Monday, Dec. 3, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Village Enterprise Center, 26A Main St., Chester
Do you tend toward negative or positive thoughts when you’re under stress? Are you a glass half full? Or half empty sort of person? Often our habitual thinking patterns can make it difficult for us to bounce back. In Developing Positive Thinking Habits, we will look at common thinking “traps” and learn ways to challenge them to develop more positive and resilient ways of thinking.

The holiday season is soon upon us. And for many this can cause an increased experience of stress and feelings of being overwhelmed. An ability to quiet your mind and body, particularly in stressful times, is vital for maintaining a resilient and healthy life. In Resiliency through Mindfulness and Stress Reduction, learn about stress and its impact on the mind and body, identify currents stressors, and learn some simple breathing and relaxation exercises to help calm the mind and body.
Whether Louse Hurwitz is teaching, coaching, or facilitating workshops, what is most important to her is respect for each person’s unique way of looking at the world. She strives to always act with integrity and compassion, guided by a strong belief in people’s ability to make positive changes in their lives.
