HUNTINGTON, MA – Kirk Eldredge Birrell, 84, son of the late Donald and Ruth Birrell, born April 4, 1929, died June 25, 2013. Since moving to Western Massachusetts from Bellbrook, Ohio in 1974, he has been a long time resident of both Montgomery and Huntington, MA.
Kirk graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Dayton. He was a veteran, serving as a U.S. Army Lieutenant in the Korean War. He was an accomplished engineer and manager for the Bendix Corporation, and cofounder of Entre Computer Systems of West Springfield, Massachusetts.
Kirk sang in, and traveled the world with several choral groups. He was an aviation enthusiast and flew well into his seventies while owning and managing a small aircraft leasing business. He was also an active member of the United Methodist Church. He volunteered with many organizations such as the Methodist Preachers Aid Society of New England, and as treasurer for the Hilltown Ambulance Association.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Natalie; son, Norman and wife Sue; son, Ken and wife Susie; son, David and partner Debbie Lusignan; son, Mark and wife Jennifer; son, Ron and fiancée Michelle; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and extended family. Kirk was the patriarch of his large family and played the role with characteristic flair and dignity. His generosity, tolerance, and love inspired devotion and respect from his clan, associates, and friends alike. He will be sorely missed.
A memorial service will be held at the Christ United Methodist Church at 271 Rocky Hill Road in Northampton, Massachusetts on Saturday morning, July 13th at 11:00 a.m..
