WESTFIELD – Although he left his post as state senator in late August, Michael Knapik is still being honored for his 23 years as a hard-working legislator.
Last week, Knapik received the Leadership Achievement Award from the Greater Westfield Chamber of Commerce. Knapik said he was surprised and honored with the award, given for his dedication to the business community.
“Small business makes up 85 percent of the state’s economy,” Knapik said. “Members of the Chamber are part of the backbone of our economy and I have always recognized that as a legislator and recognized that whenever I could on Beacon Hill.”
Knapik received a 100 percent rating on issues affecting small business.
“It was always a chief focus of my 23 years in the legislature to make sure things were not going to hinder or hamper them,” Knapik said.
Knapik left his longtime post as senator for a position as Westfield State University’s advancement officer. Knapik said he is able to continue his business ties at Westfield State.
“We are redefining advancement at the state university,” he said. “We’re looking at intern opportunities, which are in the business community, and we’re looking for financial support – I can stay engaged.”
Knapik said the business community is growing.
“There were 31 ribbon cuttings last year in Westfield for new businesses and expansions and renovations,” he said. “That’s a lot. I give them credit – they’re taking a risk.”
Knapik said his more than two decades as a senator went by “so quickly” and he met many people along the way, including those in the business community in the district and senior citizens. Knapik was honored last month by the seniors with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Massachusetts Councils On Aging.
“That was an honor, and this is an honor,” he said. “And I look forward to my farewell with the Senate.”
