WESTFIELD – Lewis G. Gile, 89, of Westfield died Sunday, December 9, 2012 in Noble Hospital. He was born in Troy, NY on August 25, 1923 to Jedidiah and Lena (Burns) Gile.
Lewis graduated from Agawam High School and was a WWII US Army Air Corps Veteran serving in Japan. He was employed as a papermaker for Stevens Paper Mill in Westfield for thirty years and later worked at the Westfield Athenaeum for eleven years retiring in 1990. Lewis was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Atonement in Westfield. He was a fifty-three year member of Mt. Moriah Lodge AF&AM in Westfield where he served as Treasurer for several years. Lewis was also a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies and was a member of the Directors Unit at Melha Temple Shrine for twenty-eight years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and fishing.
He leaves his wife of sixty-five years, Julia (Burbank) Gile; a son, David H. Gile of New York City, NY and a daughter, Julie A. White of West Brookfield. Lewis also leaves three grandchildren, Heather Gladwin, Heidi Choe and Kara White and three great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Norah and Nicholas. He was predeceased by infant sons, Lewis and Charles Gile.
The funeral will be Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. in the Episcopal Church of the Atonement, 36 Court Street, Westfield with burial to follow in Pine Hill Cemetery in Westfield. Calling hours will be Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad Street, Westfield.
