Lightning strike causes fire in Southwick

SOUTHWICK – Around 9 p.m. on Monday night, the Southwick Fire Department responded to a report of a fire in an attic of a home on Congamond Road. Fire personnel discovered that the fire was caused by a lightning strike that struck the house a half-hour earlier. Neighbors saw the fire happening and alerted the owners of the home.

With mutual aid help from the Lost Acres and Suffield Fire Departments, fire personnel located the majority of the fire in the attic.

“We were able to contain the fire within the attic space of the structure,” said Southwick Fire Chief Russ Anderson.

Anderson added there was some damage to the side wall and part of the attic space.

Due to the heat and humidity on Monday, firefighters were constantly being checked on by medical personnel during the incident. Firefighters left the scene around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The Southwick Fire Department also responded to a barn fire on Saturday night around 11 p.m. The barn was behind a residence located on Klaus Anderson Road.

Used as a supply barn for the homeowners, it was already a total loss and engulfed in flames when fire personnel arrived on scene. Being a remote area with no water supply, firefighters had to shuttle tankers to get water onto the barn.

Both the Lost Acres and Granville Fire Departments were mutual aid for this incident.
