The Westfield Little League Softball Senior All-Stars enjoyed a weekend split, defeating Spencer-Brookfield 12-2 Saturday with some post-Independence Day offensive fireworks before falling to Winchendon in a pulse-pounding defeat Sunday, 14-13.
Madison Brokney (4-for-4, 3 runs, 1 RBI), Kaitlyn Puza (2-3, HR, 2 RBIs, run), Vicky Camp (1-2, 2 walks, 2 runs), Carolyn Dufraine (2-2, walk, 2 runs), Paige Templeton (2-2, walk, 2 runs), Jen Moller (hit, run), Alyssa Clement (hit, run), and Katherin Bourbeau (hit) contributed to the Westfield hit parade in the weekend’s first game.
Moller pitched four innings of no-hit ball, striking out four batters and walking one, while allowing no earned runs. Camp closed out the fifth inning without allowing a run.
Brockney was involved in one of the game’s most jarring plays, colliding with the Spencer catcher on an attempted force play at the plate on Karly Mastello’s hard hit ball with the bases loaded. The Westfield baserunner slid into home plate, flipping over the catcher and knocking the ball loose – all while using her free hand to touch home plate for the mercy-ending run.
On Sunday, Westfield was plagued with nine errors that directly resulted in eight Winchendon runs. Still, the Whip City All-Stars battled to the very end.
Brockney (3-5, run scored), Puza (3-5, 3 runs), Camp (3-5, 3 runs), and Mastello (3-5, 2 runs) led the Westfield offense. Dufraine, Templeton, and Clement each went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Jen Moller scattered eight hits, struck out seven, and walked two for Westfield.
Westfield will face Spencer-Brookfield in Spencer this evening at 7.
