Westfield native appointed as Director of Center for Global Studies at Berkeley
NEW YORK – Dorothy Minkus-McKenna, DPS, a resident of Darien, CT, has been appointed as Director of the Center for Global Studies at Berkeley College.
Based at the College’s Midtown Manhattan location, the Center for Global Studies disseminates knowledge of other cultures and societies; promotes understanding of global, regional and national markets and business activities; and brings an international educational experience to Berkeley College students through a variety of initiatives. Berkeley College enrolls more than 900 international students from 100 countries.
“Under the direction of Dr. Minkus-McKenna, the Center for Global Studies will serve as the organizing entity for expanding global studies into the curriculum, bringing outside speakers to the College, and supporting special projects related to global studies,” said Judith Kornberg, PhD., Berkeley College Associate Provost.
In addition to her new responsibilities, Dr. Minkus-McKenna, who has been a professor at Berkeley College for more than 10 years, will continue to teach in the Marketing Department, Larry L. Luing School of Business. Her international experience includes teaching assignments in Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, France and Lithuania. Most recently, she spent the Spring 2013 quarter as a visiting professor at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Seig in Germany, where she taught Introduction to Marketing, Consumer Behavior and International Marketing courses.
Dr. Minkus-McKenna has a Bachelor of Science in Education from Framingham State University; a Master’s in Business Administration with concentrations in Marketing and Management from New York University, Stern School of Business; and a Doctorate in Professional Studies in International Business with a concentration in Marketing from Lubin School of Business at Pace University.
Local Student Wins Award at Hamilton College Convocation
CLINTON, N.Y. — Shannon C. Boley, daughter of Kathleen Shea of Westfield and Christopher Boley of Woodstock, was awarded The Charles A. Dana Prize Scholarship at Hamilton College’s annual Convocation, held on August 27. The Convocation ceremony officially marked the beginning of Hamilton’s 203rd academic year. The Charles A. Dana Prize Scholarships are awarded to approximately 10 students at the end of their first year in recognition of academic achievement, character and leadership. The prize scholarships continue through the senior year, provided the recipients continue to fulfill the requirements. Boley, a sophomore, is a graduate of Westfield High School.

Westfield High School graduate Olivia Gamble receives Dean’s Award recognition at Colgate University for spring, 2014
HAMILTON, NY – Olivia Gamble, a Economics major from Westfield has been awarded the Dean’s Award for academic excellence by Colgate University for the spring, 2014 semester. The Dean’s Award is given to students with a 3.30 or higher grade-point average average while enrolled in 3.75 or more course hours.

Jean McGivney-Burelle of Southwick Honored by the University of Hartford
WEST HARTFORD, CT – Jean McGivney-Burelle of Southwick was honored during the University of Hartford’s annual Faculty/Staff Kickoff celebration on Wednesday, Aug. 27. McGivney-Burelle, an associate professor of mathematics in the University’s College of Arts and Sciences, received an Award for Innovations in Teaching and Learning. The Awards for Innovations in Teaching and Learning were created to recognize the remarkable teaching that sets the University of Hartford apart from other institutions.
McGivney-Burelle and four other mathematics professors collectively received an award for “flipping the classroom” for Caluculus 1. In these flipped classrooms, students spend time out of class acquiring basic knowledge of the course material, so that class time can be devoted to further exploring the concepts by watching videos and doing group problem-solving activities. In contrast to a traditional lecture, where students are passive recipients of knowledge, students are actively engaged in small groups discussing mathematics and critiquing each other’s ideas.
Champlain College welcomes new students for fall 2014
BURLINGTON, VT – In August, Champlain College welcomed 662 first-year students from 36 states and six countries to its Burlington, Vt. campus.
James Keats of Westfield has enrolled in Champlain College for the fall 2014 semester. Keats is a first-year student studying Game Programming.
John Trudeau of Westfield has enrolled in Champlain College for the fall 2014 semester. Trudeau is a first-year student studying Cybersecurity.
New this year is the $30 million residential complex on the northwest corner of campus, a combination of three carefully restored Hill Section Victorian houses, two new dorms that have been open for a few years, and two even newer dorms, just completed in anticipation for students’ arrivals. The seven buildings together can house about 460 students and provides them outdoor space, too, with a new amphitheater.

Rae Defeo Makes Goodwin College President’s and Dean’s Lists for Summer 2014
EAST HARTFORD, CT – Westfield resident Rae Defeo has achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average at Goodwin College for the Summer 2014 session, earning a spot on the elite President’s List.
The List is the highest academic honor roll at Goodwin College, a nonprofit school that believes that all students are capable of great success academically, professionally, and in their personal lives. Students like Defeo exemplify the rigorous work ethic and commitment to education it takes to succeed in higher education.
Goodwin College extends its congratulations to Defeo for such a tremendous academic achievement.
Defeo has also earned a spot on the Goodwin College Dean’s List for the Summer 2014.
Defeo, a student from Westfield, is one of 744 students to make the Dean’s List, reserved for those who demonstrate great academic performance.
Dean’s List inclusion requires a student to earn a minimum 3.5 GPA, the equivalent of an A- average, during a given academic session. The student must also be enrolled in a minimum of six academic credits to qualify.
Goodwin College congratulates Defeo on making the Dean’s List and demonstrating such a high standard of excellence in the classroom and beyond.
To qualify for the President’s List, a student must be enrolled in at least six credits at Goodwin College and earn perfect marks in all classes.

Julia Fiore Graduates Quinnipiac University
WESTFIELD – Congratulations goes out to Julia Fiore, daughter of Richard & Lisa Fiore, Westfield and granddaughter of Julia Fiore of Southwick, who graduated on August 9th from Quinnipiac University’s Physician Assistant Program located in Hamden, Connecticut.
Julia’s accomplishments include graduating as a member of the Pi Alpha Honor Society.
The Pi Alpha Honor Society is the official honor society for the PA profession, formed in 2004 by the PA Education Association. Nominations are limited to 15% of those students who are in their last year of the professional phase in their PA program. Eligibility for nomination depends on excelling academically and demonstrating excellence in research, publishing, community/professional service or leadership activities as well as possessing a high standard of character and conduct. Election to Pi Alpha implies a lifelong commitment to learning applied to benefit others.

Gateway graduate Angela Barrett joins the Colgate University Class of 2018
HAMILTON, NY – Gateway Regional High School graduate Angela Barrett, of Russell, is a member of the Colgate University Class of 2018. Of the 8,715 applications to Colgate last year, just 26 percent were accepted. The average combined SAT score for students enrolled in the Class of 2018 is 1372. Colgate continues to meet 100 percent of students’ demonstrated financial need, as 43.4 percent of the Class of 2018 is receiving institutional grant funding, up from 41.6 percent in 2017.
NW Catholic Graduate Elected to Student Government at Susquehanna
SELINSGROVE, PA – Abigail Johnson, of Granville, has been elected as a class senator to Susquehanna University’s Student Government Association (SGA) for the 2014-15 academic year. The SGA is a representative student organization that ensures an active student voice and role in governing the university. The Student Senate, the legislative branch of the association, provides a forum for student opinions. It deals with matters of concern to the entire student body and seeks solutions to campus issues. SGA representatives serve on university committees and boards to promote communication and cooperation among students, faculty and the administration. Johnson, a neuroscience major in the Class of 2015, is a 2011 graduate of NW Catholic High School and the daughter of Don Johnson and Martha Lilja-Johnson.
