Sarah Logan Presents Research at Union College’s Steinmetz Symposium Day
SCHENECTADY, NY – Sarah Logan ’13 of Westfield was a presenter at Union College’s annual Steinmetz Symposium Day held Friday, May 10.
Logan presented researched titled “Imaging Live Cells Using Atomic Force Microscopy and Confocal Microscopy.”
Every year, Union College celebrates its Undergraduate Research program by inviting students to present their creative and scholarly achievements. This year, over 450 students participated in the festivites that spanned all of the College’s academic disciplines.
The symposium is named for one of the College’s most renowned faculty members, Charles Proteus Steinmetz, who taught electrical engineering and applied physics. As a chief engineer for the General Electric Company, he was widely regarded as America’s leading electrical engineer.

Local Students Graduate From Champlain College

BURLINGTON, VT – The Champlain College 135th Commencement took place outdoors, under a tent on Edmunds Field in Burlington on Saturday, May 4. In all, 470 undergraduates earned their degrees.
Vermont novelist and New York Times Bestseller, Chris Bohjalian delivered the Commencement address to degree candidates. George Chaffee, Vermont’s captive insurance association founder, spoke on behalf of the two honorary degrees that were conferred. Bohjalian, received a Doctor of Fine Arts honorary degree; Chaffee, received a Doctor of Commerce honorary degree.
Champlain College President David Finney noted a long list of accomplishments that graduating students had already achieved while working, serving and playing at Champlain. “Over 50 percent of the graduating class will be starting jobs within their field of study in the next few weeks,” he recognized.

Katherine Bozak Named to Dean’s List at Bob Jones University
GREENVILLE, SC – Katherine Bozak, a Sophomore Humanities major of Westfield, MA, was among approximately 1,500 Bob Jones University students who were named to the Spring 2013 Dean’s List.

Jennifer LaPorte of Westfield graduates from the Quinnipiac University School of Law

HAMDEN, CT – Jennifer LaPorte of Westfield, Mass. graduated from the Quinnipiac University School of Law during a May 12 commencement ceremony at the TD Bank Sports Center. The Honorable Dennis G. Eveleigh, associate justice in the Connecticut Supreme Court, addressed the 149 law students who graduated.
Quinnipiac is a private, coeducational, nonsectarian institution located in Hamden, Conn. The School of Law Center opened in 1995 and now enrolls about 400 students pursuing either a juris doctor degree, a joint JD/MBA degree or LL.M in health law. The university offers concentrations in civil advocacy and dispute resolution, criminal law and advocacy, family law, health law, intellectual property and tax. Local resident earns graduate degrees from BSU
BRIDGEWATER – Kathleen R. Camerlin of Westfield earned an advanced degree at Bridgewater State University’s Eighth Graduate Commencement Convocation on May 15. More than 500 students received master’s degrees and certificates of advanced graduate study at the ceremony.
Bridgewater awards bachelor’s degrees at annual Spring Commencement
BRIDGEWATER – The 172nd Spring Commencement Convocation at Bridgewater State University saw nearly 1,200 undergraduate students cross the stage to receive their bachelor’s degrees in majors ranging from business to science and mathematics to humanities and social sciences to education and allied studies on Saturday morning, May 18.
Bridgewater alumnus Louis M. Ricciardi, ’81, owner of the Ricciardi Financial Group of Taunton and a statewide and regional leader, longstanding member of the university’s governing boards and benefactor to Bridgewater, delivered the commencement address. The student speaker was Jabril Robinson of Braintree, a psychology major.
An Honorary Doctor of Public Service degree was conferred to Dr. Francis T. Cullen, ’72, a distinguished research professor of criminal justice at the University of Cincinnati. Retired U.S. Rep. Barney Frank was presented with a Distinguished Service Award for his 30-plus years of service on Capitol Hill.

Margaret Russell Ramsay, Keene State College alumna of 1956, former NH House representative and dedicated volunteer with Keene State and the State of New Hampshire, received the Granite State Award. The Honorary Doctor of Science was presented to Dr. Fernand Prevost, Keene State alumnus of 1957 and influential contributor to mathematics education in New Hampshire. Both recipients spoke during the ceremony.
Sliwa earns degree in Administration of Justice
NEWPORT, RI – Chelsea Renee Sliwa of Huntington was awarded a bachelor of arts degree in Administration of Justice during Salve Regina University’s 63rd commencement on Sunday, May 19.
Master stone carvers Nicholas W. Benson and his father John E. Benson, proprietors of Newport’s centuries-old John Stevens Shop – the artists behind such works as the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the World War II Memorial and the John F. Kennedy Memorial – were presented with honorary degrees and offered remarks to the Salve Regina University community.
Sister Jane conferred 439 baccalaureate degrees, 191 master’s degrees, 19 certificates of advanced graduate studies and six doctorates.
Salve Regina, a Catholic, co-educational university founded by the Sisters of Mercy, enrolls more than 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students. Its 80-acre oceanfront campus is in the heart of the Ochre Point-Cliffs National Historic District.

Westfield Resident Sara Agan Honored at the University of Vermont
BURLINGTON, VT – Sara Agan of Westfield, MA, was recognized at an Honors Day Ceremony held at the University of Vermont earlier this spring.
Agan received the Van Buskirk Award, Radiation Therapy presented by the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Southwick Native Courtney Birchall Inducted Into Stonehill College Honor Society
EASTON, MA – Southwick native Courtney Birchall was inducted into Stonehill College’s Honor Society Lambda Epsilon Sigma. A member of the Class of 2014, Birchall maintained a 3.5 cumulative grade point average. Juniors and seniors at the College who have attained a 3.5 cumulative grade point average are invited to apply for consideration. The purpose of the society is to recognize and promote scholarship at the College. Acceptance into the society is based on evidence of academic achievement, of a pursuit of learning that extends beyond the classroom environment and of an ability to communicate effectively through writing. Additionally, in order to be inducted into the society, the student must be recommended by faculty both from the student’s major and from outside of the student’s major.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute Announces Spring 2013 Dean’s List
WORCESTER, MA – The following local residents were among 1,340 students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) named to the university’s Dean’s List for academic excellence for the spring 2013 semester.

The criteria for the WPI Dean’s List differs from most other universities as WPI does not compute a grade point average (GPA). Instead, WPI defines the Dean’s List by the amount of work completed at the A level in courses and projects.

Local Students Earn Degrees from the University of Vermont
BURLINGTON, VT – Some 2,557 students were awarded a variety of bachelor’s degrees during the University of Vermont’s 211th Commencement ceremonies on May 19. There were some 575 advanced degrees and certificates awarded by the UVM Graduate College and approximately 106 women and men took the oath of Hippocrates following the awarding of their M.D. degrees at ceremonies of the UVM College of Medicine. Suffield celebrates
Suffield Academy celebrated its 180th Commencement on Friday, May 24 at 10:30 a.m. on the Suffield campus. Baystate Heath’s Mark Tolosky gave the address to the graduating seniors. Among the graduates were:
Anna Strzempko, Bryant O’Connor, Christopher McCormick, and Ryan Tettemer of Westfield.
Anna graduated cum laude and is also the recipient of the Emmet Kent Public Speaking Prize, the Emmet Kent English Prize, which honors the student who demonstrates the best written work in the course of the senior year, and the William Bradford Bates Scholarship and Activities Prize, which honors a young woman who has made a remarkably broad set of contributions to the school, from academic leadership to accomplishments in athletics, the arts, and the moral sphere.
Christopher received The Appleton H. Seaverns Award for his remarkable enthusiasm for Suffield. He has made this a better school due to his many talents, his unwavering determination and positive attitude, his eagerness to help in all ways, and his genuine passion for Suffield.

Alexis Miller Inducted Into Nursing National Honor Society
EAST HARTFORD, CT – Goodwin College is pleased to announce that Alexis Miller of Westfield has been inducted into Alpha Delta Nu, the National Nursing Honor Society on May 17, 2013 during a moving ceremony while hundreds of onlookers, including family and friends, packed the auditorium.
The objective of the Nursing National Honor Society is to recognize the academic excellence of students in the study of Associate Degree Nursing. Renée Barouxis Inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi
BATON ROUGE, LA – The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is pleased to announce that Renée Barouxis of Westfield, Mass., was recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Barouxis is pursuing a degree in Political Science/Government at University of Massachusetts.
Barouxis is among approximately 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Kristen Simeone Makes the Dean’s List at Coastal Carolina University
CONWAY, SC – Kristen Simeone, of Tolland, MA, a senior majoring in Exercise and Sport Science, is among more than 1,500 students who made the Dean’s List at Coastal Carolina University for the Spring 2013 semester.
To qualify for the Dean’s List, freshmen must earn a 3.25 grade point average, and upperclassmen must earn a 3.5 grade point average. All students must be enrolled full time.

Providence College Awards Graduate Degree to Lauren Hickey of Southwick during 95th Commencement Exercises
PROVIDENCE, RI – Lauren Hickey, a resident of Southwick was among the nearly 200 students who received graduate degrees from Providence College during the College’s Ninety-Fifth Commencement Exercises held on Sunday, May 19. Hickey graduated with a master’s degree in Business Administration.
The Commencement address was delivered by The Very Reverend Robert Barron, creator and host of the Catholicism documentary series and founder of a global media ministry. He received an honorary doctorate in religious education. Four other distinguished individuals received honorary degrees from the College. They are: Paul J. Birmingham, Vito D. Buonomano, D.D.S. ’53& ’76G, his wife, Louise J. Buonomano ’76G, and Michael A. Ruane ’71.
Providence College is the only college or university in the United States administered by the Dominican Friars. Brittany Hughes of Westfield Earns Dean’s List Honors at Nazareth College
ROCHESTER, NY – Nazareth College is proud to announce that Brittany Hughes of Westfield has been named to the dean’s list for the Spring 2013 semester. Hughes is a senior majoring in Communication Science and Disorders .

Mary Vincunas of Granville Named To Spring 2013 President’s List at Hudson Valley Community College
TROY, NY – Mary Vincunas of Granville was named to the President’s List at Hudson Valley Community College for the Spring 2013 academic term.
Each fall and spring term, the college’s President’s List honors those students who have a term grade point average between 3.5 and 4.0.
Vincunas is in the Individual Studies academic program at the Troy, NY college.
