Local teams ready for four days of action

WESTFIELD – After a 3-day holiday break, some high school teams are ready to return to action Tuesday, albeit, briefly.
Wrestling teams from all over Western Massachusetts – including our local squads, Southwick-Tolland, Gateway, and Westfield – will participate in the annual Agawam High holiday tournament. The first matches are scheduled for 10 a.m., and will continue all afternoon.
The Westfield High School basketball team, winners of two straight, will look to stretch its winning streak to three when they host their home opener Wednesday against a tough Central unit. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
The Lady Bombers’ hoops team will put its 2-0 record to the test Thursday at feisty West Springfield.
In other boys’ basketball games Tuesday, Southwick (4-1) travels to Ware, Gateway plays at Belchertown, and St. Mary (1-2) hosts David Prouty at Westfield South Middle School. In girls’ action, Southwick (3-0) will go on the road to play Turners Falls, Gateway and St. Mary (1-1) battle it out at Westfield North Middle School, and Westfield Voc-Tech (0-1) takes on Pioneer Valley Christian School at First Baptist Church Community Center.
The spotlight shines on two local hockey teams later this week. Westfield collides with Ludlow at the Olympia in West Springfield Thursday at 6:30 p.m.; St. Mary (3-0) hosts Wahconah Friday night at 5.
The Westfield swim program, unbeaten at 3-0, hopes to make a splash after the New Year’s break, and the local ski teams will hit the slopes at Berkshire East.
