SOUTHWICK – Police Officer Daniel Ryan joined the Southwick Police force full-time last month.
Ryan, 26, served as a reserve officer the past six months and said he is enjoying working in town.
“There is definitely a learning curve, but I’m learning a lot on the day shift,” said Ryan.
Ryan said he has always wanted to be a police officer and is the first one in his family.
“My mom was a little nervous, but she is proud of me,” he said. ‘She knows this is what I’ve always wanted.”
Ryan, of Wilbraham, began working as a police department intern while in high school. He has held part-time jobs with the West Springfield and Monson police and worked at the Whately Police Department while putting himself through the police academy. After graduating in 2010, Ryan continued to work with the Whately Police until a reserve position opened in Southwick.
Ryan is studying criminal justice at Springfield Technical Community College and said he is excited to put his education to work.
“I really enjoy being out in the community and working with the townspeople,” he said. “I love the challenges each call brings.”
Ryan said he is relocating to the area and hopes to move up in the ranks of the department in the coming years.
